Yeah, I'm reminded of the crooked judges who received kickbacks from privately-run juvenile prisons for sending them thousands of kids who then spent years inside for nothing more than stealing food.
Did you read the CCA prison article Brant posted in the long form journalism thread? I'm not a huge Mother Jones fan/reader, but that piece was damning and utterly depressing.
When you make keeping people locked up profitable.....there is just a fundamental wrongness to that. Same with the God-awful seizure laws that have spread like a cancer, where large chunks of law enforcement and even local governments are funded by seizures which do not require a conviction. Sometimes I think if the Founding Father's could see what we've become, they would have chosen to hang instead of rebel.
Thank God we have at least a tiny rolling back of this awful, awful process.
My only prison advice - reopen Alcatraz.

badumtish!
He's here all week, folks. And don't forget to tip your waitress.
Sounds like a racket to me.
You're courting disaster.
He loves that.
Keep it up and it'll net you a rebuke.
I live to serve. The ball's in your court now.
I like turtles.
It's the little, tiny bars on their prison bowls that make them that way.
