I'm getting stuff back on the PC, but I'm devastated to realise that all my saved games on Steam are gone. Not too worried about most of them, but losing almost 300 hours and my main character in Skyrim hurts.

Turn on syncing to Steam Cloud. It's under Updates in the Properties in the game in Steam. It'll back up your saves.
Cross your fingers Bob. I just looked and sync to Steam Cloud was checked by default (because I sure don't remember doing it myself) so maybe there is hope...
Damn Bob. Sorry to hear that. Lightning fried my first computer and I lost everything on it. It just gave me a good excuse to start it all over and I enjoyed the old games as much the second time through.
