Title: Police Tactics - Imperio
Post by: Jarhead0331 on September 07, 2016, 09:11:26 PM
Pretty interesting police management sim here. It is developed by a European indie shop so it is a tad bit rough around the edges, but so far I'm really impressed by the depth and features.

So the action happens in real time and you play the role of the new police commissioner in a town troubled by organized crime. As the commissioner, you get to hire staff, issue promotions and award medals, acquire vehicles and equipment, set up patrols, respond to criminal activity, etc. Each officer has stats in 6 different skills, ranging from patrol ability, to detective skill, riot control, investigations, etc. Some crimes you can respond to directly while they are in process, others must be solved by analyzing the crime scene, interviewing eye witnesses, etc. Vehicles also have stats, such as passenger capacity, speed, etc. You can set patrols for officers on foot, or in vehicles and helicopters. As you solve or prevent crimes, you earn prestige/renown which gets converted to funds at the end of each play cycle.  Over time, the abilities of your officers increase, areas of the map are unlocked, and you get more access to tools, vehicles and skills.

The game is played on a 3d map that has a good amount of panning and view options. If there is one issue, it is that there is no pause button, or way to slow down the action and things can get hectic. That being said, the developers appear to be very active and have indicated that they have heard this critique and are considering their options.

Anyway, there aren't many strategic police games out there, so if you are interested in this kind of thing, your options are this...and well, this.

Check it out. Its not super cheap, but at $17.99, its worth a look.

Thanks for the input on this, I saw it awhile ago but really was t sure what to think.  I believe the developers created some of those other police games in the past which wasn't well received but sounds like this version might be worth checking out at some point.

Thanks for addressing my number one question - can you issue orders while paused (no) and does it get too hectic (yes).  Time to look closer at Project Highrise.

The best police game I have played, and still do, is the tactical first-person Swat 4.

Personally, I preferred Swat 3. Although Swat 4 was good, I felt it was a step back.

in any event, Swat is a totally different kind of game than Police Tactics. There is no first person combat in Police Tactics.

SWAT 2 was a strategy/tactical game though.

Correct, but it was not a police management sim, which Police Tactics is. Swat 2 Just gave you manage a Swat team and execute high risk warrants. Great game, but still very different from this one.

Thanks for the write up JH - was looking at this - the "gets a bit hectic " thing puts me off. one for a sale I think.

It also let you play the bad guys as well.
Was quite a revolutionary game at its time considering all the options and stuff you had available and had to do.

Ditto - always the first thing I want to know about any RTS.

Ditto on the excellence of the SWAT games, too. Up there with the NOLF series as my favorite shooters. Probably a slight preference for 3 over 4, but both were excellent.

This looks like an updated version of Police Simulator 2 and its predecessor Police Simulator, made, I think by a German company who also developed Police Force and Police Force 2 which were 3rd person action sims. The Police Simulator games ramped up the crime to quickly in my opinion. In those games you'd start off with one PD and be responsible for about 6x6 city blocks, but the game would throw all sorts of crime at you in just a couple of days.  These games remind me of playing Hill Street Blues and neat little game called To Serve And To Protect. The HSB game was a strategy management title based on the TV show. The other game was an indepently developed title with more primitive graphics, but deeper gameplay with randomly generated cities and towns. Police Tactics looks similar to these games, but appears to have more gameplay like the Police Simulator games.

A new update was released today adding an active pause feature. I think this will make the game much more enjoyable and playable.
