Are they really closed for maintenance?
A few days ago I wanted to take a look at an old mod for the Tiller ACW games that I don't seem to have posted anywhere else, and the site was supposedly down for maintenance.
It was down all weekend and now it's well into the next week.
I'm not sure what else I have there that isn't stored anywhere else, but I hope the site comes back up so I can take a look and make alternate arrangements.
Anyone know anything?
no idea - I'll reach out and see if someone might know something
Yeah, the ASL community is freaking out (since that is their adoptive forum home base). Don Maddox posted on facebook that they're upgrading the server as well as the forum software and the migration with the database (which is probably rather large) is taking a while.
That message from him was almost a week ago however....

That's potentially a major undertaking. Particularly if they are moving between Drupal versions.
The ASL guys must be beside themselves. I know GS was pretty much their place to go.
Yeah, and facebook isn't really cutting it as far as Q&A stuff goes (hard to do a database query/search function on facebook!).
Maybe they'll have to go back to asking questions once a month in The General.

Yep, same story I got when I pinged a GS regular who is a FB friend. They were expecting it all back up 3-4 days ago, and he's not sure if they just bit off more than they could chew, or if this is some kind of 'cover' for a longer takedown for other problems.
Honestly, it seems like they're doing like us, and testing in their production environment ::)
I used to visit their forums regularly for CM, Distant Guns, POA2, etc. But all three of those games' third party forum activity has dried up. The computer wargaming forum at Gamesquad covered some niche games you didn't see in other places, but the traffic there has been abysmal for years.
ASL on the other hand has seemed to stay somewhat active on Gamesquad.

Same here. I was a fairly regular reader/poster there for a few years, but it pretty much dried up outside of ASL.
One of the issues is that in a couple of the game forums, it has become the personal stomping grounds for 1 or 2 people and everyone else just left. Its like they are carrying on conversations with themselves.
They need to wipe out completely the computer wargaming forums and start over. No one posts in most of the threads and the CM and Harpoon forums are useless and repetitive.

I see "her" posting in the Matrix forums from time to time.
Now now people....past transgressions aside, he does a fair bit for the gaming community. He does a fair few "first impressions" for games and has a blog that seems to be doing well.

..or a short back and sides from a claymore...........
Looks like the site/forum is back up, FYI.
Lord, a quick read of some of the posts over there makes me remember why I gave up on the place. Pitman and Dorosh together on the same forum :D
It was my go-to 3rd party forum before grogheads. But it was already sliding towards oblivion before grogheads existed. There are forums there that haven't had a post in years.
I got some good laughs there from Jim Rose of SES infamy, back in the day.
Well, they are Xenoforo now. So far so good.
The major problem I always had with the site is that the owner "forcefully" integrated several other communities he bought, some playstation thing and then the ASL thing, and they just didn't mix with the computer wargaming crowd. The computer wargaming crowd was originally a buy-in, too, from warfarehq during the heyday of CMx1.
At some point there was talk to re-introduce warfarehq as a standalone site, which makes sense to me since the ASL people there still feel alien to me. But I don't think that plan is still on the table.
Wargaming winter...

So when is GH moving to Xenoforo? :P

when you pay for it
The main part of the forum seems to be back up.
People have been downloading the mods that are listed there and linked to my Box account.
I may be having a senior moment but I can't for the life of me find a place to call up GameSquad's mod repository (which has the mod I was originally interested in).
As far as my own work goes it wouldn't be the end of the world because I could always rewire my old computer and go digging around in there for it.
But I know that one of the things that may vanish if they don't put their mods back up is Warren Bajan's low resolution Napoleonic Mods.
I never used these myself because they're too low-res for my taste (he needed to make them that way because he used a really antique computer), but the research that went into them was first-rate. Warren had an unparalleled knowledge of uniforms, and now that he's gone it would be a shame if his modding work were unaccessible.
Someone was asking me about Austrian cavalry uniforms in one of my Napoleonic mods a while back, and if Warren were still alive I'd have bounced the question over to him.
Thanks JD. Appreciated.

Hehe..
I do have a space now on Dogs of War forum that relates to the blog.
Though believe it or not it wasn't my idea but Asids of DoW. I wasn't that fussed about one to be honest.
Finally this is probably going to be seen as "cry me a river" by some but I really would appreciate it massively if I didn't have to come across posts where I'm the but of a joke. Out of the 13 or so years I've been posting at one forum or other with in the community I had a period of three or so months that I'm not proud of and isn't my greatest moment (some have such a tainted view of me because of it which does get to me, yet it all started because I was desperately trying to stay on a forum so I could still speak to you all). I do wish I could be forgiven and it forgotten. I understand some of us will never be friends (both parties were hurt) but we don't need to be enemies either. I have apologised on numerous occasions about it.
I promise not to respond to any further posts where my name or 'Wodin' is mentioned.

Well, from mid-2012 to mid-2013 you decided to drag the GrogHeads name through the mud all over the web, so either your estimation of time is waaaaaay off base, or you're remorseful about another time/place and you're actually proud of that year you spent spouting off about things you knew nothing about but were overwhelmingly convinced of your self-righteousness.
Either way, we've left it alone for over 3 years, and left you alone to continue promoting your endeavors here on the off-chance that they accidentally offer something to the community as a whole.
Despite you talking crap about me and my friends everywhere, you've never been banned from our forum, or kicked off our site, or told to take a hike. And yet the first time someone pokes fun at you, it's sad-puppy-eyes all around. Get over yourself and admit that you did some really dumb shit and we're going to laugh at it -
and you! - on occasion. Even if it's not until 3 years later.

More than likely this is incorrect, years ago Rich Hamilton had me grab everything that had existed for HPS/JTS/Talonsoft that he had posted there when he had had some sort of agreement with Maddux. When Rich decided that the agreement that they had had ended he wanted to make certain that everything that he had uploaded there was saved somewhere.
Now, granted I have never bothered to re-add the descriptions to a lot of things (because in the words of Lewis Black I have ***&* to do.), but they are there.

I double-checked this, and if Warren's graphics mods were on GS, then they were put there after what point Rich left GS, so I did not have them. What I do have are some scenarios that he had done.
That being said, you can find these mods still - plus I got copies of what I had for them, but I am not sure if I am going to be posting them or not (I can't emphasize how much I had that download program that I am using.
Edit: I don't have the graphics, but they do at the NWC club as well as some other places - doubt they are going away.
Fair enough. (I wrote much more but then decided it's a wasted effort. I'll just say it's been alot more than just the post I quoted otherwise I wouldn't have posted anything, but hey you all know that anyway:)
Hope you and your clan have a great Xmas and New Year
Sorry for the delayed response, I don't come here that often these days, too busy with the blog and all that goes with it (alot more work than I thought it would be, but we are all enjoying it. I now have an understanding of your side and what it must be like to be bad mouthed..again sorry).
A shame I do think if things had been different we could have worked together which could have benefited our websites and in turn our readers. If things keep going in the current direction regarding the blog then who knows we may bump into each other at a convention where I hope we are both mature and man enough to sit down and have a chat (I'll even buy you a drink:)) I pretty confident afterwards your view of me would be totally different to the one you have now, as I do honestly wish it could be a case of forgive and forget as in my eyes life is way to short.

The Few Good Men is great for CM stuff... if that helps? http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/
Don't get put off by the "FGM" welcome front page - it stand for Few Good Men not the other FGM >:D ;D
The ASL crowd is why I stopped going to GS. The merge after buying that ASL forum was almost as bad as the one after buying that console gaming forum.
We heard that Don wanted to re-activate warfarehq.com (the forum he took over to start it all) as a computer wargame only site since we don't interact with the ASL people anyway. However, nothing happened.
As mentioned here I also dislike that GS always ruthlessly invalidates all links ever posted to its forum, on every software change, even when it would be technically possible to forward almost all content.
