Interesting article about how our expectations regarding early access games on Steam has changed over time. http://www.pcgamesn.com/starpoint-gemini-warlords/early-access-games-changes

Never understood the attraction of early access. You play an unfinished buggy game to the point that when its released as a full game you are already done with it.

Agreed, this one of the disadvantages of a digital platform where{almost}anyone can get a game on EA. Back in the brick and mortar days a vast majority of these titles would not have even seen the light of day.

I see nothing wrong with EA access and really enjoy the option to purchase early if I so choose....I know its not for everyone, but love the ability to optionally participate if I see fit.

Early Access is great... if the developers are actually active with the community's feedback, and the game is at or very near feature complete.

Unfortunately those two things don't always happen.

Agreed, Grim. It's nice to have the option to purchase "early access" without being a slave to being an official beta tester.

Haha. What more can you improve? I mean it's generally all done.

Five more different types of can openers.

Never understood the attraction of early access. You play an unfinished buggy game to the point that when its released as a full game you are already done with it.

...or you play it for two weeks, then come back to it a year later. Oftentimes (TOO OFTEN) there have been very few changes, and this creates a problem in and of itself.

I am increasingly shying away from early access games, and purchasing games with a herd rating of above 80%. No doubt I am missing a few games that I would enjoy..but I can only spend about $100 a month or so on games.

100 a month is a lot.

100 a month is a lot.

I have purchased over 200 games on steam alone in four years...I am including board games in with this total. Usually one board game a month.

$100 a month represents well under 1% of my families' gross income. The missus spends more than this on art supplies for her students!

A lot means you will end up acquiring a lot of games and no time to actually play them.

Amen to this and I have well over 200 games on steam and that doesn't even include all the games outside of steam, tillers entire catalogue for example. To be honest this is something i have been thinking about a lot lately. Given work and a young son and a wife I have left my computer several times recently questioning the simple viability of this type of gaming as a hobby. In a week, even including weekends I can get through say a few turns of tillers bulge game for example. At that rate it would take me a year to get halfway through the battle and that's if I only concentrate on that one game.

It's another reason why I don't do early access but a real issue with the nature of my chosen hobby which leads me to start a lot of things but never much more than that as am always conscious of the limited time to get any significant way into anything I own.

Have seriously considered just giving this up and finding something different to do

That has certainly been my experience. I have purchased more than enough games to last me the rest of my lifetime and I continue to buy more.

Seeing the insanity of it, perhaps I should join On-Line Gamers Anonymous (http://www.olganon.org/home). :-\

Come on now, your telling me we can actually play these things we buy on Steam. I thought it was just to add those nice colourful icon thingys on my Steam page and maybe read some of the very informative forum posts. Now you are telling me I can actually play the games, where on earth am I going to get the time to do that with all the stuff I've now collected in my Steam library  :)

One good thing about buying digital downloads of games is that they don't take up any room in your home. I filled an outbuilding with retail boxed PC games and when I ran out of space, I filled a chest of drawers and several shelves with them. As a result, I buy mostly digital downloads now. I do miss the nice box art though.
