Interesting RPS article. Curious of what others think. I am leaning toward the intimidating.

Both for me. Appealing - I buy. Start up - I'm intimidated ;D
The longer, deeper, and more difficult, the more I want it.
Intimidated? Pfff! Only if it requires a huge amount of set-up work with hardware or mods, which just isn't fun.
Big games don't intimidate me. Confuse me sometimes, yes. Intimidate, no. Monsters like Decisive Campaigns, AGEOD's games, Skyrim, and Pillars of Eternity are what I game for. Any game I can finish before the sequel comes-out is too short for me.

Still waiting fer out game of DC: Warsaw to Paris there Slash..... >:D
That's intimidating Barth.
They appeal but me finishing them isn't that often. I finished the Original Xcom and Xcom Terror from the deep probably 3 or 4 times, and I finished Firaxis's xcom 1 as well as again with The long war mod. These aren't really "Big Games" so much as they just take 100 plus hours to get through. Big games...as in say...Bauldur's Gate 1&2, yes on those, Planescape Torment...nope, Morrowind? Never finished main quest although I have several 100s of hours in it...Same can be said for Daggerfall, Skyrim, Dragon Age 1 , 2 or 3--Witcher 3.....I do want to finish a playthrough but the time investment is so huge somewhere something else pulls me away before I can manage it...and all these games are the type if you leave them sit for several months and come back you can't go from where you left off...your just lost plotwise, questwise and so forth and need to start over.
They don't intimidate me and I enjoy a good story finish....few games keep you engaged to a finish...most mentioned do have that...the fault lies with me...not the game ---but I'll buy every one with wishful thinking I can get through them...when in reality probably not.

LOL!
+1 to this. It's a frequent phenomenon for me as well.
Like
ghostryder, I love my long games (I'm a sucker for EPIC scale), but I don't actually finish them that often. For me, it's always been more about the journey than the destination (although it is fun to occasionally see a game through to the end).
Ghosty nailed it.
Intimidating until I learn them then appealing.
They don't intimidate me, but if they're not done very well, they often start to bore me well before I finished.
I love finishing a great game that avoids grinding at the end. I hate having to grind out the last 33% of a game's length just to claim a victory that is devoid of suspense or difficulty.
I think what gets to me is the constant micromanaging a long campaign. I am sure there are people that like to keep tabs of all events over a long type of campaign such as HOI3, GG war in the East. etc. I always think that I can be one of those people but after a year of a campaign I lose interest. Especially when I realize I haven't funded some kind of research that would enable me to get a super weapon that would be a game changer.
I find myself not being a human spread sheet that keeps tabs on where my 2ND Panzer division is and what shape is it in. They seem minor at the time but it can be a big game changer if you use it thinking it's a crack division but it's under strength and underfed. Some games I can manage, Endless Space was always one of my favorites. I also like AGEOD's game World War 1, I can keep track of what's going on and it keeps me excited about how the game pans out.
I will probably always want to get the newest Strategy game and attempt to play it. I don't blame the game developer but myself when it comes to losing interest.
Epic games no problem, get started, get bored generally and put down. Epic Wargames however do intimidate me War in the Pacific, War in the East etc these just scare me.
Bring 'em on!
A game should be as long as its rewards are consistent and varied.
If the player unlocks everything but the game length to the end is twice as long as the typical unlock space, there might be an issue.

I'd have to agree with FarAway Sooner. If I'm going to sink time in a game it better be consistent. The beginning should have a great hook (Fallout 4), the middle should be engaging (not Fallout 4), and the end should make all the shit in the middle worthwhile. (Knights of the Old Republic).
Failure should be evident at a point early enough on so that it's pretty obvious that you've lost. My one foray into War in the East's Grand Campaign I was able to limp along for awhile not realizing that many many hours later I discovered I was totally screwed.
Witcher was fun in Act 1, but I hate it when all those filler missions just feel like filler. Sure it's a cool world to explore, but how many times do I really need to criss-cross it?
For myself, long games are appealing up until I actually have to start putting time into them.
I'm flaky as hell and better suited for short bursts of gaming - due to actual limited time available and personality.
:(
Both appealing and intimidating, like the Not-Impossible She. :smitten:
