Farragut (DDG-37) and Aylwin were steaming south after a port call at Bermuda, probably in '75.
We were about 3,000 yards apart when Aylwin went into a little rain squall. The day was sunny, no swells, and wind over the deck about eight knots.
When she came out of the squall, her topsides were a mess. In maybe thirty seconds the wind picked up to eighty knots and anything loose was blown away.
An old boatswain mate said this had happened to his old ship, the Keppler, the same way in the late 50s.
Can only imagine what a sailing ship would be like when a microburst with that much wind surprised the crew.
Nah. I'm still believing that UFOs under the sea have been capturing ships and planes in the triangle since the late 1970's. :)
I don't think you're alone in your belief.
Nah, I wiped all those underwater alien UFOs out in Operation Terror from the Deep some years ago.
Thank you for your service :P
I'd sooner believe it is a giant flying chocolate Jesus than anything posted in the NYPost.

To be fair, the Post just picked up someone else's story.
And who doesn't enjoy a giant flying Jesus?
Don't forget chocolate, the best part of any naval or aviation disappearance.
Mmmmm...chocolate.
My work is done here.
Praise Chocolate Jeebus!
OK, you guys demanded this.
How is it possible that no one posted this in the thread yet? ???
I have no answer but perhaps Chocolate Jesus does.
That's just too scary. Can we go back to Sea Monsters?

That someone else being The Sun apparently. Other articles originally posted at The Sun, according to the sidebar, include paranormal explorers finding a crystal pyramid in the Bermuda Triangle; UFO wreckage proving aliens visited Earth; aliens trying to make contact with Earth; and a noisy UFO flying over Geneva.
To be fair,
this article is soberly scientific. O:-)
That said, the microburst explanation, while admirably covering a lot of data, doesn't fit planes dropping altitude in (basically) clear skies or ships going down in frothing seas. Those seem more like rising bubble effects, like large clouds of sulfur or methane.
That said, somewhere there's an article I've read many times (though I no longer have the book) that examined the famous training flight of torpedo bombers that vanished, and reconstructed what happened in enough detail to explain it sufficiently as a fast moving air front coming in from an unexpected direction, screwing up their navigation and leaving them out of fuel ditching in the coastal swamps. So for that most famous incident, nothing especially exotic.

It's been pretty widely covered beyond just the Sun and NY Post.
Heck, NBC and CNN ran it too. Not that I consider either of those reliable news sources.

I could never eat Chocolate Jesus.
Unless it had a peanut butter center.
Well yeah. Then I definitely could.
You know you're going to hell.
I'll miss you.
See you when you get there!
Well, as every sailor knows there is a special place in hell for khaki wearing water tenders.
I think I may have been in Hell for the last 10 years and didn't even realize it. It's not that bad.

The goddamn Flying Spaghetti Monster. That's who.
Peace Be Upon His Noodly Appendages.
