I'm looking at Civ 5 and Medieval II: Total War and was wondering if any of you folks have played both and what your views on either might be.
I do not trust Steam reviews :uglystupid2:
I'm mainly considering either of these titles because they both apparently have some wonderful Middle Earth mods available.
Thanks for any info
Medieval II Total War is a definite must have, get the "gold" version that includes the kingdoms expansion pack. The mods have extended its lifespan as well considering is a 10 year old game now, i play it occasionally nowadays using several mods such as Stainless Steel, Europa Barbarorum 2, and Rule Britannia (RB).
Medieval II: Total War is one of the greatest strategy games ever made. if you do not own it in one form or another, you are not welcome to post here. O:-)

I consider Medieval II: Total War the best version ever made. I still play this game above others of its kind.

Why choose...buy both.....
Medieval only $4 and Civ 5 (complete edition) only $10....can get two decent games for a total of $14

Everyone else, thank you for the info
JarHead......promise, it will be in my library shortly O0
I always keep Medieval II on my hard drive. One of the most played games I have. Civ V is fun too.
I'll add my hearty endorsement for Medi 2 Total War being an excellent strategy game though the graphics are a little dated by now. It's one of my favorite TW titles easily with so many great features. And the Middle Earth mod of which you speak is a near masterpiece in itself. The Third Age Total War mod transforms Europe into the land of Tolkien at the time of the War of the Ring with the factions from the books and films, all playable, represented. Probably my all-time favorite TW campaign. O0 O0 O0
I bought MTW2 twice. Does it give me special status here?
Oh yeah, well I bought it FOUR times.
Twice so I could play MP LAN games back in the day. I think I still have the super-cool DVD boxes they came in. AND the registration codes.
Twice since so I could play MP LAN games over Steam with my son.
It's indicative of just how ADHD we are with games that M2TW and Civ5 don't end our need for all further games...

I don't want to start another thread and be "that guy", so I'll piggy back my own thread! O0
I'd like to find another WW2 strategy game to try.
My experiences are the following :
1) Hearts of Iron 4 - I'm much too dumb and impatient to learn that game, and I don't want to worry about tech specs, factory production, political whatnots....I want to play on the battlefield.
2) Battle Academy - I liked the game, but even for a simpleton such as myself, I grew tired of it (after 40+ hours).
3) Men at War 2 - nice looking game, but that game made me realize real time isn't my thang! :crazy2:
4) Panzer General series - Fun little games, but the 10 units of "X" was hard for me to wrap my head around. Got bored of it quickly.
5) Combat Mission 2 (the Normandy Demo, I think) - GORGEOUS game, but I knew it wasn't for me after watching a couple tutorial videos and maybe 5 minutes of me trying to play. Interface made my eyes bleed
6) Steel Panters - LOVE...LOVE this game, but I hate to admit this to you all....I like eye candy :smitten: It doesn't need to be ultra sharp graphics, but the old 90's top down stuff makes me :'(
So, that's about it.
Can any of you fine gentlemen recommend a ww2 strategy type game I can take a look at?
All or most theaters of war
Decent graphics
Larger scale battles
Complexity level.....maybe a 5 or 6 out of 10 (for me...CMx2 is a 10.....Battle Academy is a 4)
Thank you for helping out this impatient wannabe wargamer! :idiot2:
Since you are open to tactical games...
Campaign Seires covers all of WW2
Graviteam Tactics is like CM2 but in a larger scale. Very pretty game. But you said u don't like real time.
The new Strategic Command WW2 Europe is coming out from Slitherine/Matrix soon.
That series is considered one of the few Intermediate level grand strategy games for WW2. Somewhere between the Panzer General/Corps stuff and HOI series. Gfx have never been great, however, so that may be a consideration for you.
@jomni - thanks for that. I've looked at the Tiller CS and I don't mind the graphics and I have read a lot of good things about it, but I'm wondering if it's a little more complex than I'm looking for. That being said, it's something for me to really look it. Thanks
@Nefaro - Yea, saw that the other day. I'll read up on some reviews. Looks promising. Thank you
Do you plan to play predominately solitaire? My understanding is Tiller games have weak AI.
Solitaire only
Weak AI?.....so....you're saying I have a chance!? :coolsmiley:
It's only one theater of war, and the battles are medium-scale (e.g., it's specific battles around Russia and not the whole Eastern Front at one time), but Unity of Command is a slightly groggier version of Panzer General with remarkably simple mechanics and some award-winning AI.
So, since I'm still not entirely sure what's all out there in the gaming market....
Is there a game that has :
hexes
turn based
covers all or most theaters of war
covers naval, air and land
preferably 3d counters (sorry, not a fan of the NATO type counters....do I lose Grog points here? :-[)
historic units (Pz II's instead of Light tank)
an editor to rename units, change their stats, and to make your own battles/scenarios
The only game I know of is Tiller's CS, but it's not navel
Thank you O0
I agree with Jarhead and others..MTW2 is the best one--not to mention some great mods available for it as well.
The truly best TW game is the original Medieval: Total War but it's going on 15 years old now...however Martok still plays it and it has a classic mod for it whose name escapes me at the moment. I even wrote a review on the mod in 2003 or so.

That's how martok sees the world, like reading the matrix
Tiller's CS -- which will be getting a remake in the future with Matrix' CS team. Sacrifice most of the naval assets (aside from landing boats, that kind of thing): you can't have everything.

Not so much toilet humour, more sexual innuendo. And childish banter.
I can recommend the MTW2 English Civil War mod "For King or Country" at the TWCenter and I know Sauron is ecstatic about the 30 Years War mod there as well.
Yeah, sexual innuendo and lots of scatological references, spiced up with the occasional reference back to the OP just to keep dragging the original poster along...

I honestly don't know, as I never played Medieval 2 much (as
Gus noted, I've remained a fan of the original
Medieval Total War/Viking Invasion). It wouldn't surprise me, however, as combining mods into mega-mods had already been a thing since
Rome 1.
Broken Crescent is one of the best mods I've ever played for any game, especially if you enjoy Islamic history. A lot of work went into it and it shows. I still recommend. As far as it being rolled up into something bigger...I don't know. I don't think so.

You have to make a copy of the exe and change it's name back to the original (Steam version changed that shit for some reason).
Quote
Since the Steam version of the whole game was changed some time ago (they got rid of the pesky gamelauncher and reworked the file structure) there is no "Kingdoms.exe"
1. Go to the game dir
x:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Medieval II Total War
and create a doublet of the
"medieval2.exe"
2. Rename the doublet:
" medieval2.exe --> kingdoms.exe"
This will trick the mod into working.
This should be the basics for installing and playing the Stainless Steel mod which, if not obvious, I highly recommend to try out.
http://steamcommunity.com/app/4700/discussions/0/611701999534776595/
Yes, the game was much easier to mod in it's original form and there are still many mods for it at the "Total War Center" site. But the game's well past it's prime, especially in looks--- like me. But still very playable. I have to look for my CD when I want to play it which seems very strange now days.
^Wow that was quick...thanks Nef. I will perform this operation a little later.
So beyond what you posted, I am hoping the rest of the installation is the same...
BTW Slash my CD stopped working for M2TW...I think it did for a lot of others too.
Have been following this thread and I wanted to suggest Scherpunkt's game series, Middle East, Anglo German war, Russian German war, and the latest World War 2 Europe. WW2E It is a vast series of scenarios some not complete yet but Ron Dockal has been releasing them as he completes the Beta Testing for each scenario and campaign. Covers all the large and smaller battles in Europe, including East Front. Not to complex nor to large of a learning curve.
Here is a link to their website.

I installed the Steam version of M2TW Kingdoms earlier this year, and installed the Stainless Steel Mod.
IIRC, that's all I had to do - make another copy of that exe and rename it to the original name. Don't recall if it needed to also be moved up one folder level or not.. just depends on what folder the Mod shortcut is looking in (under it's Properties).
That Steam install info is also listed in the Stainless Steel installation thread, at the TWcenter forums, but searching for specific stuff there has often been a needle & haystack nightmare. But here it is, because easier to find via google search than their crappy forum search:
Quote
FIXING STAINLESS STEEL FOR STEAM INSTRUCTIONS:
#1 Go to your default medieval 2 folder
#2 Make a Copy of "Medieval2.exe"and rename that copy to "Kingdoms.exe"
or you can use the SteamModFixer.bat* to do this part for you.
#3 Go to your SS mod folder (mods\SS6.3\) and right-click on SS_Launcher.exe, open Properties and in the compatibility tab tick the "Run this program as administrator" option, don't forget to press the Apply button before closing.
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?659966-New-Steam-Update-quot-fix-for-mods-quot
The above worked for me, I fired it up yesterday. I have 6.3 installed. A few years back I tried to patch up to 6.4 but IIRC it broke my 6.3 installation, so I did not install it on this copy. The upgrades/benefits of 6.4 didn't sound worth it right now.
When I start playing I am going to take the Polish faction...I remember it being great fun, with an awesome roster, in a bad neighborhood full of a big variety of Germanic and Russian enemies to take on.
I never played the SS mod but did try-out the Scilian Vespers Mod and the Darthmod for M2TW. Both were great but plain old vanilla is good too. My Kingdoms CD still works just fine but the Medi 2 doesn't any more. I never finished my 'Britannia' campaign but I just might give it another try.
^Sicilian Vespers is another great mod.
The Crusades campaign for Kingdoms held my greatest ever victory. I played as the Egyptians and won in ~25 turns :)
Crusades was a tough campaign. I won as Jerusalem but it was a long slog. I also beat the base game twice. As Spain and Holy Roman Empire. Spain was more fun. After gunpowder appears, you get Galleons and then can make it across the Atlantic to the New World full of rich, cities full of lots of very unfriendly Natives.
The New World campaign was a separate campaign IIRC...
True, I played that one too. But in the base game after tech had advanced to the proper level, you could build ships that were able to fully cross the Atlantic to the Americas. Which before hand had been un-crossable by the smaller ships you were only able to build until then. It was late-game stuff after gunpowder allowed building the first cannons and musket-type units.
I don't think I ever got that far.
