Never thought I would be posting in the board gaming section of the site.....but today I happened to be at a used book store and noticed they were selling a copy of Gulf Strike, which is a game that I always admired from a far, even though I never played the board game, but it somewhat got me interested in wargaming. I remember reading through all the ads and I received some kind of special insert about the game that went into the details, which just made me drool. But I never bought it since really none of my friends were into board gaming so I always left thinking about it. I did buy the computer version of the game when it came out, but never really liked it much.
So even though I will never play this game, I went ahead and bought it, especially since was only $15. With that price, I expected it to be missing parts but to my surprise when I opened it, all maps and documentation completely in tact, and the counters where not even punched (or clipped, whatever the term is). This was also the third version of the game, so it included all the add-ons. The outside box itself is a little scuffed but overall not a bad deal.
I will get my little joy out of just reading through the books and looking at the maps/counters.....that only is worth it to me!
You've been infected. Be prepared to buy many, many more board games. :P

Yep, couldn't pass it up:) But of course as I was handling the counter sheet, I accidentally ended up punching some of the counters...oh well, was bound to happen at some point:)

Nice score! and now that you've punched it, you can start trimming the counters!
$15 for an UP copy of GS w/DS is a heck of a deal! I've been thinking of (re)acquiring GS for a while now myself. I owned and played it back in the early/mid 90's but that copy went *poof* in on of my many moves back in the day. It's not a terribly complicated game but it has a good bit of 'chrome' so you'll be referencing the rules often. And yes, I really hope that you get to actually set it up and play some time! There's some smaller/introductory scenarios as I recall (maybe even the Iraqi takeover of Kuwait and then the ensuing Kuwaiti liberation).
Unpunched anything, except mainstream games (like the usual Pictionary and other assorted crap) are great finds at used book stores or thrift stores. I try to go into the local Goodwill stores close to me once every six months or so just to see. I've only gotten lucky once - found a brand new copy of the newer version of Axis & Allies 1942 and Battleship for three bucks each. Otherwise it's party games every time.
If you're really diligent about hitting thrift shops regularly, you can score some great finds. But, you have to be ready for months or years of disappointment to find the gems.
I've had good luck getting deals on old games at cons. A lot of times guys are just looking to unload things that have been sitting on their shelves for years and they'd rather have it go to a fellow wargamer cheap than put it out on Ebay.
Yard sales are another good place to look, but it's the same as thrift stores - lots of looking through crap for the hidden gems.
They also had games like Hexagony and Richthofen's War, those were roughly the same cost too but didn't open them up to see if punched or not.
You didn't buy Richtofen's War?! :o
TBH, I would have bought for nostalgia reasons only. I don't think it holds up that well.
If you're on eBay, Grim, you might consider picking stuff like that up and re-selling it, unless it's too much of a hassle.
I get depressed reading the 'Thrift Store Finds' threads on BGG so I stopped doing it a long time ago. :)
The last cons I went to were 2004-2006 or so. I remember clearly getting an unpunched copy of Carrier and Tokyo Express, each for around twenty bucks. To this day they're STILL unpunched and on my shelf...lol.
Actually, strike that. I'm looking at Tokyo Express right now; it has a 30.00 price tag on it but I remember they were doing a half-off sale when I got that one, so $15.
I more purchased this based on my past interests in it, not likely going to make this a major hobby or for making money, just don't have the time, space, and friends who play. However, happened to be at another location of the store this morning and they had Fortress Europa sitting on the shelf...got it for $8 and again totally intact with counters not punched.
This ends my purchasing of board games:) Back to the computer!

Wow! You lucky son-of-a-bitch!!
I've had zero luck at Half-Price Books, though I've heard of plenty of people striking gold, there.

You really should give those a try - Carrier is pure solo-wargaming bliss filled with tension and excitement.

I've picked up Up Front, Pacific Theater of Operations, Gladiator and Blood Bowl 3rd ed at HPB. None were great "steals" though as I think the guys that work at the ones here are keen to checking the price history on BGG but they were reasonably priced and without shipping (but taxes).
I buy the bulk of my used games from CSW Marketplace and have for years now. You can get some good deals there.

Unpunched, he could sell it for a tidy profit.
I've gotten rid of more than a few wargames last year via eBay...most of them were unpunched and relatively rare. One of them was my Ambush! set, including a few of the modules, as well as the Pacific version of Ambush! also. The entire thing had a LOT of miles on it and it wasn't complete, but someone still bought it for a pretty tidy sum.
Anyway, the ones I have on hand still are ones I'd still like to keep, and those two are definitely on my keep list, especially as they're solitaire games. I just need a week or more off from work and family duties to try a few of these.
