So I bought BF1 and have put some time into it. Hoping that it would catch some of the magic of BF2 or BF 2142, and unfortunately it did not do it for me.
Don't get me wrong, BF1 is a pretty good game. It just doesn't seem to match the vastness and scope of BF2. The maps while larger then Call of Duty, are still nothing compared to the size of BF2s maps. For example, from one spot on most of the BF1 maps, you can see the entire map area. Even the smaller maps in BF2 such as Wake Island, I could not see the entirety of the map from say the top of the carrier.
Weapon upgrades are pretty stale, and do not seem to make the weapons that much better till you get to the level 15 weapons, which are just plain old OP derp guns.
The game really just feels like an optimized re skinning of BF3 for the most part. It's good, but the entire time I was playing, it just felt like I had done it all before.
So I cant see me giving much play to BF1 going forward. If I am going to play a shooter, I will stick with Planetside 2. PS2 is free, has serious tactical clans that you can join, and the map and scale is just enormous with 1000s of players fighting an epic war over 3 planets that each have their own distinct huge maps.
Some historical things I learned about WWI from BF1 ;) :
Half of the German/French/British/American/Italian/Austrian Hungarian Army was made of men with African ancestry.
The Martini Henry (Yes the British rifle used during the Zulu Wars) was the best sniper rifle of the war.
Zeppelins, men on horseback with swords, and Armored Trains were the kings of the battlefield
I think you might mistake BF2 for having bigger maps because of the limitations on draw distance at that time.
The Conquest maps in BF1 are vastly bigger than BF2's maps without a doubt. The fact that you can look across the whole map just shows the progress hardware has made over the years. :)
Too bad BF1 didn't float your boat though.

Haven't played PS2 in a while - I agree it's a great MP experience - are there still full servers? I'd read that it was downsizing because the player base was contracting
:'(

Im looking for something that compares the map sizes. In some of the BF2 maps, it could take you over a minuter to traverse the entire thing in a helicopter and like 30 seconds in a jet. The biplanes in BF1 you can traverse the maps in like 30 seconds.

No way that BF1 map is as big. An airfield alone in BF2 would be about the size of the town in the BF1map. The city map in BF1 is even smaller.
I miss B2

A game of chess has a bigger map than CoD... ;)
40% off in Singapore. I believe it is 30% elsewhere for Black Friday.

At 40% off I would get it, if only for the SP campaign. It's a truely awesome cinematic experience! O0
What the? Pigeon flying?

What the? Pigeon flying?
its a MP game mode:
on smaller parts taken of the bigger maps a pigeon (messanger) spawns and can be captured. the guy who got the pigeon goes into hiding and 'prepares a message for the HQ' (a timer is ticking down) when the 'message is coded' and the pigeon is ready prepared he has to go into the open space to release the bird. The bird fly away, delivers the ciphered message and a devastating artillery strike on the opposing team is the result. if the guy with the pigeon gets killed the other team can take over the pigeon (the timer didn't reset to zero!) a pigeon in flight can be shot down at the very last moment when the bird climbs into the sky, so there will be no strike then... a new pigion spans after a while.
in general the team tactics are: frist all rush to the pigeon position shown on the map. the one member who lucky grabs it first goes into hiding somewhere (inactivity) and all his team members try to protect him at all cost until 'message is coded', protect him on his way to open space, and then finally the pigeon has to be protected (a fews seconds only) until it made it to safety higher up in the sky and is gone...
Hahaha!
Here you go - War Pigeons
Actually I was playing the SP campaign and there was thing lengthy pigeon flying sequence.
It was a rather poethic scene, I found.
Can't help but think of Speckled Jim...
After looking at a lot of videos of the Beta I decided to buy it. So £50 later, started playing and it was just like any other Battlefield game, ok the game looks gorgeous, but decided it would be too much hours to be proficient in it.
In the end I got a refund, and decided to wait for Steam sales. For £5 more I bought the Withcher Game of the Year Edition, Fallout 4 and Xcom2 Digital Deluxe.
Well, Bayonet Jr hasn't played any of the other BFs, and he wanted BF1 for Xmas, so it's going under the tree. Without anything else to compare it to, I think he'll probably be OK.
Got this and play with my son who wanted it really badly. It's surprisingly fun really. You don't get killed as fast as you do in star wars battlefront. But yes it is just a ww1 flavour as battlefield 1942 was as well.
Graphics are amazing. Gameplay is light... here are some things I learnt like the OP from BF1 about ww1 so far:
a) The British used captured A7V tanks
b) The standard German LMG was the lewis
c) Tanks had top speeds of 80mph
d) Flamethrower troops had impenetrable armour unless you hit the tank on his back
e) 90% of troops have automatic weapons
f) Medics can revive dead corpses
g) Troops wander off on their own for flanking manoeuvres with no regard for their own safety.
Over all it's what you would expect and lets face it. FPS and PC tech is not up to the challenge of simulating hundreds of riflemen charging machine guns.
Game has great atmosphere and is just a great feeling. I had to do the indiana jones thing. I stood on a MKIV tank and called out to my mate on a horse to come beside me.... indy!!! lol

You don't get killed as fast as you do in star wars battlefront.
This is my biggest problem with the game. Hard to kill with bolt action and automatic single shot rifles. You run out of bullets quickly with SMG and HMG because it takes so much bullets to kill someone. I find the battles in Battlefront more organised.
But still fun. And definitely more players playing this than the other title.
Yes. The only way I get a battlefront game is by switching to US servers usually. Not fun to have a bad ping.
Verdun can be the same. It has very small numbers online and also needs to sort itself out animation wise when it comes to syncing. If it did sort itself out I would probably play Verdun more.

Coincidentally, I just bought Verdun. By the way, the Star Wars blasters are WW1/WW2 "Frankenstein" guns.
Be interested in your opinions of Verdun Jomni. The uniform upgrades for each squad are amazing. I still miss the Aussies with slouch hats, although realistically our blokes wore British Helmets at the front in the West.
The game is probably the best representation of ww1 in an FPS I have seen to date. It does not look half bad either. But their are a lot of problems with smoothness and animations depicting what you should actually be seeing. I die often from getting killed by people who have not even raised their weapons according to the animation.

Not to worry...
Rising Storm: Vietnam will be out before too long, and you'll have another multi-player FPS to fret about. :-"
Already fretting about it Nefaro. Because even though I cannot play it. Sheez it looks horrible.
When you look at what Verdun has done with a small team I would have hoped the RS2 Vietnam team would follow.
That's quite a rapid fire bolt action he's got there...with a twelve round magazine
I kinda don't like the "clunkiness" of Verdun. Reminds me of old school ARMA (Op Flashpoint).
I agree Jomni. As I said. Performance is an issue and the animations are not the best. But it is simply put the best ww1 FPS from a historical standpoint imho. I still enjoy a good whirl with it every now and then.
Especially in team vs AI waves mode.
Question about Battlefield1 though.... I see rifles at the bottom of the weapons and gadgets for the Medic, for instance the Lee Enfield. But when I go to customise soldier they are not their as options.
You have to spend credits to unlock them. Credits are earned when you level up. Which screen are you looking at? I'm away from my PC so I can't give details for now.
The weapons and gadgets screen under your character...NOT the customise soldier screen.
Scroll to the bottom and their are some rifles for each character.
Here are the rifles at the bottom of the medic screen:

Come to think of it. I have never been able to use the Standard Issue rifles. I only got to use the Primary Weapons.
Apparently there are servers which only use standard issue rifles. Otherwise it's the customizable primary weapons.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Battlefield/comments/5iipwl/bf1_how_do_you_play_standard_issue_rifle_i_only/
Well that's disappointing. But hey it's Battlefield. My expectations are very very low.
But boy it's a blast with the boy and some of my mates... because learning squad tactics is more fun than the game itself.
It's also fast enough to give you a good dose without the need for huge time investment as some other FPS shooters have.... ARMA3 or Squad (have not played squad).
I have now come to the conclusion that bf1 is far too fast and the maps too small to allow any real squad tactics other than running around behind people and squad spawn camping. It's exciting at first but once you get over the graphics and the schere spectacle of it all. You want to go back to something slower where men have mass and move more slowly with a good sized hitbox.
Battles in Star Wars seems more organized

My feelings exactly
My take, the whole concept of BF1 was EA COD'ing the battlfield lineup. The games now are a far cry from BF:BC2 and even BF3 days.
Eastern front coming...hard to tell if there will be another SP campaign. I pray there will be.
^Ilya Muromets doing treetop level CAS? ::)
I was just happy to see them.

This is why I play Heroes & Generals.
I can usually stomach some stretching of history for game play's sake....but BF1 just goes too far for me.
