Title: Tom Cruise is (somehow not) the Mummy!
Post by: JasonPratt on December 01, 2016, 10:30:11 AM
...rather, the Mummy will be a hot babe now. Like... the Anti-Leeloo, I guess?

You could do worse for your Universal Monster Universe Rebootup attempt than get Tom Cruise to headline its first entry -- although then I don't know where you go from there, is he going to be the thread for all of them or what? And the teaser trailer sure looks as different as possible from the previous Mummy trilogy (the first of which I still hugely enjoy, the second of which I respected for some reasons even though I didn't and don't enjoy it as much, and the third of which I'll get around to seeing someday I guess).

But I can't say the teaser trailer is doing anything for me yet, either. It looks like a gloomy, noisy mess. Evil Mummy Goddess Or Whatever looks interesting the few times she's flashed (pun quite intended) on screen, but that's it.

Look, I'm not entirely difficult to please. I love the first of the Mummy trilogy movies (as noted); I pretty much love the Wolf Man remake (at least the extended cut) even though I didn't appreciate the over-the-top violence (but still, I understood it: werewolf movie); heck, I even enjoyed Dracula Untold a lottttttt more than I was expecting. We're not going to go with either the Wolf Man remake or, so far as I've heard, DracUntold, though. So... I just don't know what to feel about this yet, other than a migraine.

Also, everyone noticed I made a joke about TC's leathery skin in my thread title, right? That was my most enjoyment out of the trailer so far.

The official trailer release looks somewhat better:

I... guess they're going to go with a genderflip version of the story all the way, with Princess Amenet (or however it's spelled) looking for her reincarnated lover -- which in today's world I might have bet would be the blonde archaeologist character (also hearkening back to the Hammer lesbian horror exploitation movies), but since TC's military officer gets brought back to life himself maybe it's him? Could go either way. Anyway, looks better. A good idea to lead with the plane crash sequence anchoring most of the trailer.

This is definitely not a franchise that needed a reboot.

I was quite unimpressed with the trailer.

Why are people saying the iris-splitting thing looks good?  It's neither scary nor all that impressive for CGI.  WTF?

And having some slender little half-naked chica playing a monster?    :pullhair:

I want my monsters scary, disgusting, and intimidating!   :tickedoff:  If these MFers are going to gyna-up movies like this, they better make it look like some big horrid badass of a nightmarish hag.  Assholes.  :knuppel2:

That's because it is.  Just watched Kingsman the other night.  The second installment comes out in 2017.

This is definitely not a franchise that needed a reboot.

The way I understood it, they are remaking the whole series of classic gothic monster movies.  Mummy, Vampire, Werewolf, etc.   Dunno if those will be the actual names, mind you, but it sounded like they were wanting to revivify the old black & white monster flick themes.  Not necessarily those few mummy movies from a couple decades ago.   More reboots either way, huh?

Did the trailer for the trailer, and the trailer itself, not get enough good buzz?

...welllllll.... what if Imax releases the trailer missing a lot of its sound 'tracks'? The result is both a little creepier and a lot funnier!

Imax took it down almost instantly, but the internet will have what she has been denied, or words to that effect, and the trailer is getting more attention now than either of the previous entries.

Intentional marketing hook? Fortuitous accident?

More news on the Universal Monster Project (or whatever it's eventually called), which I just heard at second-or-third-hand from Bob Chipman (aka MovieBob) when, not too surprisingly, he included this film in his list of 2017 films that will probably suck. Don't know where he heard or read it, but his information is typically good, and it isn't like I've been trowling the internet myself for it.

* Johnny Depp == the Invisible Man (in a later film). Could be okay.

* Javier Bardem == Frankenstein monster (in a later film). Could be okay?

* That guy working for LadyMummy, played by Russell Crowe? He's playing Doctor Jekyll. That fact alone, and what it implies, already means the writers and/or producers have fundamentally misunderstood the characters they're working with. (Oh, they're Orczi and Kurtzman, the team behind half the Bayformer movies, Amazing Spider 2, and the first two Star Trek reboot films? Also a fact I don't think I knew until now. Also not a fact that gives me more confidence.)

Well, he can make outstanding films. I don't know if we need anymore Mission Impossibles :P

He was truly excellent in Collateral and I very much enjoyed Edge of Tomorrow.

No matter what you may think of the Scientology stuff,  he's a talented actor.

I suspect she's supposed to be more of an anti-heroine (and a hypermagical sorceress), with Doctor Jekyll being the real Big Bad. Which is also a major misreading of J/H, but whatev. Recent footage shows that he'll Hyde out at some point in the film.

Meanwhile... huh, Tom Cruise is (sort of) the Mummy!

Also, a lot more humor in this trailer than prior trailers would have had anyone at all believe.

Also, lol at the Tom Cruise "face" joke! (Scripts will often poke some humorous fun at his smile or face.)

Early reviews starting to come in.

Stuckmann is eh, positive, liked a lot of it, including the Mummy herself, weak script between the action and interesting shots. C overall (which for him is only average, not bad.)

Jahns: "At the start of the movie it hit me -- this was the Uncharted movie that we're never going to get!"

His main problem is the uneven tone, bouncing between super-serious grimdark tragic horror and light bouncy action comedy. Also, it has trouble mixing a standalone film with CHAPTER ONE OF THE DARK UNIVVERRRSEEE! -- so, uneven that way, too.

Well... I can understand the aversion to Costner's acting.

His speech was often rather monotone.

Since actors jobs are all about putting out the melodramatic lines, he stood out as a rather dull one when delivering them.

Cruise tends to catch shit because he joined a big cult which has questionable practices and nuttery.  ~~>

It's not related to the previous Brendan Fraiser Mummy movies (of which I wasn't a fan). This is Universal's attempt to build a franchise around its classic monsters (Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, etc ).

Anyway, this new movie is being widely panned and it has nothing to do with Tom Cruise's religious beliefs. It's sounds like a stinker.

Mr. Sunday Movies: a resounding meh, but on the downside of that.

One point he makes is that the cast (especially Cruise as usual) and crew are clearly trying super-hard to put something into this movie, but the direction and editing are screwing them over. What's the point of collapsing a whole building with real guys (including Cruise I think?) on top, for example, when the way it's shot and edited it could be CGI or just practical faking of a collapse just as easily? Why do 90 trips in the Vomit Comet to do a weightless scene which in the movie seems to last for only a few seconds, and so which could be done with wires and/or CGI just as easily?

I don't care about his religion, unless he promotes it on-screen, which he doesn't. I think they're just using a 'big name' to promote a crappy movie... maybe. I suspect he'll get paid pretty well either way.

Kevin Costner was solid in The Untouchables but then again he was also a horrific Robin Hood just a few years later. And in between was Dances with Wolves. His resume is pretty uneven.

Well my wife and daughter went to see this and thought it was - their word - abysmal. Apparently they thought the story was all over the place, didn't make sense, Crowe was awful, the cheeky chats between Cruise and his sidekick were awful and were misplaced and the girl interest was a "nothing" story spare part.

They also said the film didn't know if it wanted to be scary, funny, a new direction, a play to the original...pretty much what I had heard about it.

I don't know - I haven't seen it but I've been to enough movies with them to know we have similar tastes - so I'm skipping.
