the first demo i ever downloaded - 290mb over a 56k modem - had to wait 2 days!!
It was very good in its day but, if I remember correctly, it had a clunky, frustrating user interface...or am I confusing this with something else?

Not really. It was the same as most X-Com style tactical strategy games.
The thing that bothered me was it felt like I needed to zoom
further out, and that everything was too close to the camera. So when you were firing at someone, they were often a screen or two away so you had to move the camera a lot. Not much of a problem when your character(s) were indoors.
The rag doll physics and the large amount of destructible terrain was a blast. Punny.

I didn't buy the game when it was released because of the suits of armor that seemed very out of place, but for that price it's difficult not to buy it.
At one time there was a mod to remove the panzerklein.

Utterly brilliant game. The Panzerkleins didn't bother me so much; I was more annoyed by the grenades, and that if a soldier hadn't been raised from birth to be someone who throws grenades and does nothing else, he could barely manage throwing one a metre.
But other than that, just amazing. Such an absorbing experience, not least for the sheer carnage you could cause. And I'm not just talking explosives...all of you guys must remember a really good sniper shot that whistled between a couple of planks of a fence enroute to the target, sending wood flying. What a game.
The Panzerklein mod does not work all of the time. I never could get it to work properly. Others had the same problem. It is very touchy and not very user friendly. Some reported that they had to install the mod repeatedly to get it to work well.
Still for $10, a 3/4ths of a good, squad, turn based, WWII combat game is a good deal.
Panzerkliens just killed the end part of the game for me. I finished the game, but really hated it. Game balance was completely messed up at that point.
The game strategy is play slow, have lots of snipers, and have one or two scouts who can spot for your snipers. You also have to save regularly because the destructable environment can sometimes block the path to necessary items & objectives. That is the trade off for the fully destructable environment.
I really liked the game, until I disliked it. I bought it when it first came out. If you like any of the Jagged Alliance games or the Commando's games - you will probably like Silent Storm at this price - at least through most of the game.
I was a beta tester for both of the Etherlords games, from the same company, back when they were making "S2". They asked for forum input on what people wanted in the game, which WW2 era weapons they thought should be included, etc.
And the Panzerklein thing is obviously what happens when you poll a very small clique of your current user base on an internet forum who had been previously enjoying all their fantasy titles. While I applaud their open requests for input, this is the kind of thing that happens fairly regularly. A couple other examples I can think of off the top of my head: 1) People voting for an open sub interior for walking through in first-person mode for Silent Hunter 5. Basically useless. ::) Most people use an interface mod to avoid having to use this feature. 2) The recent forum vote for Endless Space to have a controllable camera in the battles.. as opposed to actual gameplay improvements. 3) Voting for Star Trek Online to have interiors of player ships modelled so they can walk through their own ships in first-person mode. Instead of actual gameplay improvements (I'm starting to see a pattern here), once again leaving us with something that rarely gets used because it's fookeen useless! ::) ::) I'm convinced that a lot of people don't think about the future results of their voting decision.
Nefaro, I said the same thing about Eve Online's walking in stations years ago, when the "feature" was first touted. Worse than useless, it will actually have a detrimental effect on the game as it causes players to spend even more time docked in stations. For a game that's all about the players, that's a bloody silly thing to do.
At the time I was shouted down on the official forum. These days, most players seem to agree with me.

What a waste of dev time. That could've been much more useful if they had added something to the current gameplay. ::) Just like many other examples.
