Title: Star Wars sim X-Wing recreated in Unity
Post by: Grim.Reaper on December 28, 2016, 08:38:21 PM
I doubt it will ever be completed, but does make you think what it could be with a more modern engine.....

From PC Gamer.....

More than two years ago, an "X-Wing enthusiast and hobbyist game developer" by the name of David Esparza Guerrero posted a message on the GOG forums proposing a remake of the X-Wing flight engine that would read the original game's resources and allow it to be played at contemporary resolutions, with modern input devices, and even to take advantage of some of the improvements that were made to the later TIE Fighter and X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter games.

To jaded eyes (like mine), the XWVM project might look like the sort of pipe-dream idea that gets kicked around excitedly for a few weeks and then fades into nothingness. But Guerrero wasn't messing around. A few weeks ago he posted 14 minutes of prototype gameplay on YouTube, and oh my, does it look good.

The battle, a recreation of Y-Wing Historical Mission 6: Interception and Capture, isn't as busy or intense as, say, the action in House of the Dying Sun. But X-Wing is a different kind of space sim, from a very different era. Missions are typically big, sprawling affairs with multiple goals—scan this, escort that, capture an enemy ship intact—spread out over large tracts of space, with plenty of room to cruise (and forget what you're supposed to be doing). Battles can get hairy in a hurry, especially when capital ships are involved, but getting caught up in a one-on-one turnfight that just will not end isn't necessarily the kiss of death.

The thread on GOG also contains some fun and interesting insights into the behavior of the game, which Guerrero has clearly spent a lot of time with. In one post from November, he discusses why AI-controlled TIE Bombers don't drop the hammer the way humans would: The enemy "is intentionally held back with artificial limitations" on behaviors like how and when it launches torpedoes, because otherwise the player wouldn't stand a chance of coming out on top.

I'm a little worried that, as it comes to prominence, XWVM will fall victim to the same sort of cease-and-desist wet blanket that shut down the fan-driven Battlefront 3 project Galaxy in Turmoil. It might be possible that its reliance on the original X-Wing files will exempt it from the lawyer's touch, but the difference between importing an old game into a modern engine rather than recreating it entirely is an awfully fine hair to split. Here's hoping it's enough.

Some studio somewhere has to be working on some top secret Star Wars flight sim.

The legality seems to work with OpenXcom: you have to own a legit copy of the game to run the fan upgrade.

There must be sooooooooooooooo much money in a remake of the Star Wars games (X-Wing, Tie Fighter specifically) I just can't get my head around why no-one in the gaming industry wants to make so much money.

Now is the time to strike as the films are making a resurgence.

It's times like this I wish I was a game developer and not a Windows front end designer for databases

Appears they like just sticking with the Legos formula for games:)

It is odd to me as well.....Star Wars games would make a killing nowadays especially if they made them on the consoles as well.

I finished this on keyboard back in high school. It has a special place in my heart. Even with the AI held back on purpose, which could have been avoided if they put them far enough away, some missions
were for the obsessive compulsive. You have to do things perfectly and in the correct order to succeed. However the world won't see games as well put together as these anymore I think. The depth and briefings were amazing as you got carried along by the story and actually felt like part of a squadron. The wing man calls and the contextual mission calls and music all made this a great experience. Combine this with the much more sim like features and briefings that make you think and you have a marriage made in heaven. This game was made when geeks and grogs had PCs and the masses had not yet crashed the scene. It's what I wish so many more games were like today.

Would I do it all over again? Unlikely without coop multiplayer. But I would take a spin for old times sake. My son has the steam version of Xwing and immediately said that it was too hard because of the perfection in shooting and mission complexity. He is however very young... he does however like battlefront where you pretty much auto aim and fire. That's as deep as it gets.

EDIT: Looks like Disneys lawyers are already on the job. They disallowed him showing the "cool" intro to his video.. not sure what it was though. Maybe it was not one of the cut scenes for the game...
