I've never even heard of or been to Wendy's ??? But those are some funny quotes :DD I still love a McDonald's big mac though :smitten:
Named after the original owner's (Dave Thomas') red-haired fourth daughter.
He used to do the TV commercials himself, sometimes, but died back in the early 2000s. His daughter Melinda, whose nickname provided the namesake for the chain (Wendy's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers) sometimes does the commercials now.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy's
Their big selling point is that they don't use frozen meat but hand-patted fresh squares larger than the bun. They don't (or didn't) flame-broil their burgers tho, like Burger King does. They manuevered into the top 3 burger chains after McD's and BK.
If you've ever heard of the phrase "Where's the Beef?" -- they were the ones who started that commercial series.
Yep!
They've never had a store in Ireland per se, but they did in the UK. During restructuring they closed their European stores some time ago.
Dang, now I want a Wendy burger. Though I really prefer BK or, by their current standards, Hardees. (Though none of the chains beats Five Guys...) :dreamer: :smitten: :dreamer:
I can't eat from burger King, I'll get a drink from there, but I can't eat their food. I was traumatised once with really bad food poisoning from one of their burgers :hide: it was the end of a holiday I was on, and I ate one of their burgers before leaving the holiday place... And for four hours on the drive home, I think I got out and spewed my guts up about 3 times, on the hard shoulder of a motorway as well! I was still throwing up when I got home for another few hours. Not good! #:-)
And I'm sure their burger joints are fine, but all I feel when I spot a burger king is my gag reflex go into overdrive ;D
That video clip reminded me of the golden girls for some reason ;D that slogan, where's the beef, is a new one on me. Never heard it before, but its a good one!

it's famous in the US from the 1984 presidential election when Walter Mondale used it to describe Reagan's tax plan and then it became a running gag that everyone made fun of Mondale for

Wendy's = best fast food chain here. :notworthy:
Better food than the rest. Aside from the good burgers & fries, I've always thought their chili was surprisingly good, along with some other menu items. Can't say that for most of the other chains.
The BKs around here have a rather unsanitary look about them. They're usually alright, but I'm always wary.

Yeah, that was a big saying here for a while. Even now, evry now and then we use a variation of that -- "it was all bun but no beef" -- to describe something.

No, no! The experience you describe is quite normal after eating American fast food! O0
Wendy's and Hardee's go neck and neck for me. I take that back, if I am hungry for a burger, and I pass a Wendy's first, I'll pick that every time. Hardee's just always seems to be on the same side of the road I'm on.

Eating it usually brings it back up about 3-4 hours later...
That's a long time to hold it down.
White Castle was great. The best fast food place for my money was 'Burger Queen' back in the day. Damn good burgers and to-die-for fried chicken and fish. :smitten: So naturally it had to go out of business.

Sadness! :'( Can't blame your body for not wanting to take that risk again. Technically I love several flavors of Hamburger Helper, but I contracted such terrible food poisoning after eating the second half of a refrigerated skillet for breakfast I threw up through my nose (an experience I have managed to not entirely repeat since then) -- even got some bits stuck in that eustachian tube going to my right ear. Have not managed to convince my body to eat any since then EVEN THOUGH TECHNICALLY I KNOW I STILL LOVE IT!
Did you get the sauce or cheese on it? Those are more likely to go bad than the bun or the flamed meat. (Notably, Wendee's chose to store their cheese at a higher temperature some years ago in order for it to melt better on the meat, which I understood though I don't eat cheese much, but which struck me as increasing the risk of some serious problems!)
Like Nefaro, the BKs around here have developed unsanitary looks about them. I'd still eat at them more often if I just lived closer to them; I passed one yesterday about 30 minutes from home, but had to get back to the office soon so I didn't take the opportunity.
Dude...dude

Whataburger beats em all.
I hear Kim Kardashian is considering opening a chain of burger places, "Whata Seta Buns". The Meat goes in the Middle. :hide:

I drive past two Braum's getting to my Whataburger. It's not an accident. I like Braums, especially their fries, but their burgers just aren't in the same league as Whataburger. Braum's is better than Sonic though, another local chain that is everywhere in OKC.

There used to be one diagonal across the intersection outside my high school (and we had an open campus for lunch). There were many bacon-burgers with a caramel malt that were put down there my senior year.

Things much have seriously changed since I live in Oklahoma then, because Whataburger used to be cardboard-shingles-and-too-much-mustard, and Braum's were fresh off the grill behind the counter. Twice as thick and twice as much flavor.
Braum's hasn't kept up, even from when I lived in OKC previously. We do love their fries and their ice cream, and yeah, the burger patties are good local beef, but it seems a stale bun is more the rule than not and if you hit them at lunch time, good luck with (1) getting your burger the way you ordered it or (2) getting hot fries. Too many people working for Braums just don't seem to care.

I wish. No, it was various Radar systems, ARTS (https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/technology/tamr/arts/), basic electronics courses, etc. Off and on I was there for around 2 years total. It was in the 90s.
Just wondering - my uncle was at ATC school in 89, while we were stationed down the road at Ft Sill.

I trust my instincts.
I've learned to never trust mine.
Having never eaten at Braums' or Whattaburger, I'll stick with Five Guys as the best in my experience. :notworthy:
Still, even if the former two are now apparently in decline, I'll keep them in a corner of my mind somewhere for reference if I'm traveling outside the area (or if they move into Jackson metro).

That definitely explains why I've never heard of it before then, wasn't born ::) that's some cool political info as well, thanks for that :) The first thing that pops into my head when I hear Reagan mentioned is his political relationship with Margaret Thatcher. It was always well publicised in the UK as being very amicable and friendly.

I'll bear that in mind Nefaro, if I ever find myself over there in the states I'll have to pop into Wendy's and try a burger O0 I like chilli, but only if its mild :o And its not just in the states where BK looks unsanitary, they vary a lot over here, some look very clean, others just look like a bacteria friendly hoarding house ??? I'd also love to go to an American diner to eat if I ever get over there, they always look great places to eat in the movies :)

Oddly, reading or even describing and remembering that, doesn't affect me at all -- and I lived through it! Maybe it's like childbirth? (Note to self: probably not like childbirth.)
I should guess the cheese is what went bad then. I can hardly imagine the meat going bad, considering that they start frozen (unlike Wendys!) and go through double-sided flame broiling. Still, hard to say, I'm not highly experienced (or at all) in fast-food preparation subtleties and risks.
Americans love food -- as our obesity rates testify! -- so between that and our cultural melting pot tendencies, you will never, ever run out of good food to try from coast to coast, if you visit here. (And bad food, you'll never run out of that either. :P )
Incidentally, speaking of Americans loving our food, "Hamburger Helper", while it uses ground beef, is actually a line of boxed dried-ingredient casseroles (ground beef or chuck supplied freshly by the user). The sauce is probably what went bad despite being in my fridge overnight; Mom would say this came from using the skillet to store the food overnight. I have no idea why that would make a difference, especially since I was religious and thorough about cleaning the skillet between use, but I can hardly argue about the results! (The terrible, terrible results. Never again storing food even temporarily in what I cooked it in.)
