Title: Dice Discussion
Post by: Bison on January 17, 2017, 11:12:57 AM
Who doesn't love dice?

I have several sets of Chessex dice.  For the most part I'm satisfied with them, but I'm pretty sure my green/gold set the 20 sided dices is not balanced.  I'd need to do an experiment to know for sure, but it seems to roll the same numbers over and over.

Anyway the kids like the funky look of the dice in the Chessex pound of dice.  I picked up a package of them awhile back, but I'm not overly impressed with them.  The colors are god awful for the most part and the random assortment while adding a bunch of dice to the collection didn't really balance out the types of dice like I hoped it would.

I'm considering purchasing a bulk package of Wiz Dice or Skull Splitter.  The benefit is guaranteed sets and a low cost.

I'm just not convinced that Chessex produce the best dice.

I have a bunch of dice that I collected over the years. Probably mostly Chessex, but I can't remember. It's been at least 15 years since I bought dice (other than those I get in board games).

Ah, Dice.... the joy and bane of every gamer.

My favourite dice are set of 6 D6 that came with my first Risk game about 40 years ago. They are 3 red and 3 white basic dice. They roll very well and still have their pip paint after all these years. Probably the dice I trust the most for randomness.

I never was a D&D player so odd shit like D4, D20, D100 etc were never of any interest to me. D8 and D10 were the most exotic I got.

I have a set of gold plated metal dice, D4, two D6, D8 and two D10. Fantastic weight and they all roll well but man, don't use them on any surface you like.  :o

Which brings me to the dice tower I built from an old wooden wine gift crate. Never used one for most of my gaming life but now I don't like NOT using it. They are really easy to build and there are lots of plans out there. Great random rolls and protect your gaming surfaces. I like it even more than dice trays or box lids.

I've been looking into making a dice tower.  I think one made of wood is the route I'll eventually go.  Played one time with one of those plastic Chessex dice towers and I wanted to break the thing.  The noise was too much.

Wooden ones still need felt covered bouncing surfaces in them to bring the noise down to an acceptable level.

I also couldn't stand a sizable proportion of the colors in Chessex' bulk dice packages.

Picked up a big bag of Wiz Dice a couple years ago.  It has a more even range of less funky colors.  Although the dice quality doesn't really stand out, I appreciated having a more solid range of colors.  I did get a pearl-white set of in the bag, with a light yellow color inside the numbers that is very difficult to read.  But the vast majority of the dice were okay in that regard.  Also saw one d6 with a shallow blunted corner.  So it's not all bacon and ice cream.

Also picked up some of the Q-Workshop basic white & black sets (https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Dice-Black-White-Board/dp/B003ZWIS5E).  IIRC, the d4 and d8 were a bit smaller than the norm, but the set looks good and seems to be a decent quality.   Hell, the whole set may be just slightly smaller than the others discussed here, but that didn't bother me.. and they didn't seem quite as heavy as Chessex dice which is probably a good thing IMO.

I think Q-Workshop's more expensive sets are probably some of the best out there, and have a wide range of fancy graphical styles, but they're rather pricey and some can be a bit more difficult to read if they have too much graphical flair.  I just grabbed a few sets of their basic ones as a compromise between function and good looking fonts.  Probably not what you're looking for if you just want a big ass bag o' dice deal though.

Am curious what the Skull Splitter bags of dice look & feel like.

Dice trays ftw.

Ultra Pro actually put out an elongated dice tray (https://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Dice-Rolling-Tray/dp/B01CVKKYZW) that I've been using more lately.

My older wooden-walled dice trays took up a lot of space with their thick ass sides.  Could mitigate that by putting them on TV trays next to the table, but it still wasn't optimal for me.  The UP tray's sides are extremely thin in comparison, so more space efficiency.  Plus it just fits around everything better than the round and octagonal wooden ones.

I agree that the elongated design is better suited to table space....

The sides aren't cardboard, but they also aren't heavy wood.  I can't tell exactly what they are.. some kind of wood aggregate I'm sure.. because it also has thick paper glued over it, along with felt on the inside of the walls and bottom.

Not as sturdy as the big wooden (https://www.amazon.com/Da-Vinci-Wooden-11-5-Dice/dp/B0010YAEI8) .... dice trays (https://www.amazon.com/KOPLOW-GAMES-11888-Koplow-Dice/dp/B000XVG8XY), but it's rectangular shape and thinner sides just fits better around my games and makes more efficient use of table space.  Especially when it's being used from multiple sides of the table.

Rolling dice on my game mats quiets them enough.  But I'm always concerned about people tossing my dice off the table.  This is an extra concern when it comes to boardgames which have their own custom dice, which are often limited in number.  Interrupting the game, due to moving furniture in a dice search, just sucks.

I bought a 12" circular dice tray...was getting tired of stray dice/falling-off-the-table dice. Now the challenge is finding a spot for a 12" dice tray, LOL. Still I envision it being very handy for games like Fortune and Glory or other dice-heavy games.

I saw a wooden tray at Hobby Lobby I considered picking up to use as a dice tray.  I would of course add a thin foam core board and felt to the bottom.

They are really heavy and should last forever.

I've wanted to do something like that with a smaller-than-normal one.

Have seen people do some gameplay vids, who had their own custom-made dice trays.  The nice ones seem to be relatively small wood picture frames that they've glued a proper "bottom" onto, along with felt above and below that bottom.

They look pretty good and aren't too damn big like many of the wood trays.

Just haven't bothered perusing wood picture frames at Hobby Lobby.  Especially since I picked up that rectangular Ultra Pro one.

Yeah.   I would just head down to your local game shop.  I bet they carry Chessex and you can look at the coloring in person.  Sometimes the colors on Amazon don't do them justice or make them seem less gaudy than they are in real life.  The price will also be almost identical or within a dollar or less of the online pricing.

I need to find my dice bags. At that gamer's flea market last year I traded a game for a sweet customized Pac-Man dice bag that the wife of one of the game sellers there was selling herself.

That was a lucky bag of dice.  I don't think we got one set of the same color other than the guaranteed one.  The nice thing is that you have enough dice for a number of other players who don't have dice.  Honestly if I had it to do over, I would have picked up the Skull Splitter or Wiz Dice bulk bags that come with guaranteed matching sets of dice.

Title: Re: Dice Discussion

I really like them. My only complaint is that they use the "." to help distinguish between 6 and 9 instead of the "_" that I like better. If you zoom on the picture in the link and look at a 6 or 9 you can see what I mean. Otherwise, great dice.
Title: Re: Dice Discussion
Post by: Bison on January 17, 2017, 09:52:57 PM
Yup I see what you are saying.  It's weird that they mixed and matched the . and _ on different dice.  The big issue I had with the Chessex pound of dice beyond some truly horrible color combinations is that the _ under the 6 and 9 on almost all of the 20 sided dice isn't painted or barely painted enough to be noticeable.

Yeah.  I'm going to do it sometime too.  I'm not sure that those particular test are good for determining whether a dice behaves in a "weighted" manner.  The alternative would be to roll a dice 100s of times to get a sample and figure out the % each side is rolled.

I loved the ones that came with the colored D&D boxes back in the 80s.  Plus those similar, but huge, d10s that came in the GDW boxes.

The modern "precision dice" don't use anywhere near the same molds as those D&D oldies.  Crappy knock-offs.  The d20s were double digits back in the day, for example, whereas all the modern ones I've seen only have a single digit per side and you must color each set of numbers differently.  Plus the overall shapes aren't as even and the nasty flash sticking out on some.  *sigh*

About 20% cheaper, looks like.

I'm tempted to get that orange set too, or a red one, and take a yellow crayon to it so it looks like my first ever set.

A pretty interesting article if you're a dice geek or statistics nut.  Chessex versus Gamescience randomness test.  These guys rolled two 20 sided dice 10,000 times each to obtain their sample.

Title: Re: Dice Discussion
Post by: BanzaiCat on January 19, 2017, 12:58:47 PM
I'll throw a nerd penalty flag in and say that it's not accurate if they rolled by hand. Each roll would have to be the exact same way. There's too many random factors in hand-rolling (positioning, grip, distance, force, etc.) - it would mean each of the 10,000 rolls are different. Definitely randomized I guess, but to me it seems wrong if they're not all rolled in the exact same way each time. And that probably misses the point since people roll with their hands and not using robot arms or whatever.

Why would you NOT trim the flash off a precision die?   ::)   I mean.. why test it with the flash still sticking out from the one die face?  *sigh*
Title: Re: Dice Discussion
Post by: Bison on January 19, 2017, 01:27:32 PM
Well Zocchi claimed that a small amount of flash or mold mark didn't have any decernable effect on the randomization of the dice.  It's an odd assertion and agree with you.

Definitely odd.

A little piece of plastic sticking out from what is supposed to be a very flat face?  Pretty much required to trim that off.  I always took that as a given requirement before usage, along with filling in the digits with color.

Not like it takes more than a minute with an X-acto or small razor.  Despite having a set of jewellers files, for trimming the flash off my minis, I didn't really feel the need to even file it - just lightly trim with aforementioned blades.  *sigh*

Having kids to a point helps a lot on taxes. But virtually overnight, from one year to the next, you'll go from having a 7,000-dollar refund to maybe 1500 if you're lucky, and then if you're not you'll end up owing. I always pull the max amount of fed tax from my paychecks so we don't have to deal with that, but the last few years have been very lean. Our last refund was less than a grand. Thanks, Obama.

Dunno how many times I've seen people use the crappy "overhand" card shuffling style.  Then complain, "I swear that I shuffled these!" when the same cards are still clumped together afterward.  Drives me a bit crazy because it's obvious that type of card shuffle doesn't really shuffle them.   L:-)

Well I finally scored a hard cover copy of Dungeon Crawl Classics.  Of course for those who know this particular RPG system, you know that you need an assortment of crazy dice: D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8, D10, D%10, D12, D14, D16, D20, D24 and D30.  AKA Zocchi dice.   Impact miniatures makes a complete set plus a large set with more odd D#s.  Good stuff for nerds to grok.

Picked this dice deal.  $13 for 6 sets of dice.  Best part a set includes 4 D6 instead of the usual 1 D4.  I got a salmon, green, blue, and purple translucent sets and a white and a black opaque sets.  Great dice for the price.  Frankly just as good as some of the more expensive Chessex dice.  I'd recommend it to anyone looking for more dice.

Even more so if they are made in Florida.

Though if that's the case, who's to say WHAT kind of jawbone that is...

That D-Total dice is discontinued online as far as I can tell - are they bringing it back? Or was it just an Origins thing?

they submitted it for an Origins award, so I can't imagine they'd do that if they were discontinuing it

The wall on the tray doesn't seem like it would prevent the dice from rolling onto the table.

I just bought this set (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EGPOINY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) yesterday to go along with my copy of Techno Bowl. I'll be using both in a review in the near future.  O0

The dev recommended the dice himself, and I admit I think they'll look great as a part of that game.
