We've been having a new kitchen fitted for the last month or so and there's been a shed load to get on with. Ripping out the old one, removing tiles, re-plastering, putting in the new one and oiling bloody worktops. It's been a nightmare. We've got the flooring to go too and some finishing touches.
Outside of the kitchen, real life has really pulled me back this year so far. Any time I have had I've used for gaming and so forums took a back seat.
So all is good and I will pop back soon. Promise O0 :smitten:

JD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome back, JD! What's with those funny looking outlets? :P
hey O0
I think you're talking about the ones on the floor where the missus is painting? They're for the radiator.
May God have mercy on you, my son. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
Glad you're relatively OK, JD. O0
Nice work! The wife wants the kitchen sink area tiled. I just want to finish painting the upstairs. The to-do list never empties just gets more added onto it.

Nice job, JD. :bd:
Wait you did all that kitchen work or you had a contractor do it?
And welcome back!
Nice job JD. What did you use to cut the hole for the sink? We have to do the same thing at ours, so any tips are welcome. BTW, evre thought of a second career as a kitchen fitter? :)

They are modern electric sockets. You still have the two pin things, but things have moved on in the world of domestic electrics since the 1930's... :-" ;)

No doubt there must have been times during this herculean endeavor when you'd feared you'd lost the plot.
Thanks guys - it's been a slog. LOTS of prep work, demolition, measuring and dust...lots and lots of dust.
I haven't done it all myself. I did all the stripping and prepping - I've been oiling those solid beach wood worktops for 3 weeks...all 9 meters!!
I got all the cupboards in place and we had a proper chippy come in to do the cutting of the worktops - they cost £200 per 3 meters and I didn't want to screw up! Once he cut, I helped get everything in place and then he secured them. He used a router I think he called it - something that chips the wood away but doesn't cut it - more like sands it out I think. He used that for the underneath where he was going to fit clamps to clamp the wood together.
I also had an electrician come round and fit some extra points and the cooker/oven.
As for the sink hole, I believe he measured, drilled a hole and then used a jigsaw. He went through 2 blades though, the wood was so tough!
But it's almost done. It's been...disruptive. The most annoying thing for me was the mess. Being an ex-squaddie, I do not like having dust or mess around - and there was lots of dust and mess.
Just a few wee bits to do...the upstands, kick boards, a couple of blanking plates and ends, a couple of bits of filling round sockets (and a hole where I measured wrong for the cooker hood...hence why I didn't want to cut those worktops!) and touch up painting where the worktop (big section with the sink) scraped the wall. Then we'll get a company in to do the blinds (the missus wants the front of the house to look the same in the windows) and I might do the flooring...but I might just chuck money at a company so I can get some time back :)
I've been in a tunnel for a while but now there's now light :bd:

lol - thanks. Found it eventually
Good to see ya JD.
I concur that redoing a kitchen sucks.
Ours was in similar condition - House was built in 1950's...Kitchen was mostly original from 1950's.
BTW, is that your beer fridge? :crazy2: Ya'll got some skinny arse reefers across the pond. Can barely fit a case of JC in there.
Hey JD! Lots of work but that counter and sink look great. Well done. :bd:
Nice to see you back, JD! Place wasn't the same without you :) Nice work in the kitchen O0
HURRA JD :D
(we all were a little bit worried about either your health status or being droven off by some politics curfews somewhere in threads i didn't read)
your Revell 1:1 miniature of a contemporary British kitchen is outstanding ^-^
and you got the model fully functional too :)
you did not clip the counter (workplace) compleatly so ....i see a furious discussion starting here ;)

left is clipped right is not ^-^
Thanks MG - just soooooooooooo busy.
That corner was "clipped" (just for Barth) because of it's position (there's a door to the conservatory on the left and so people walk in towards that corner). However, I did say to the missus we should have them all done (this was mentioned by me before he came round to do the tops). She said no - fine with square corners everywhere else.
However - having seen it, she's of the mind that we'll have the other corners clipped - just like corners should be - and so he's coming round today to clip them
So never fear my friend - I knew what needed to happen, was over-ruled then sat back like a good wee husband and allowed her to make the right decision in the end :DD (well played JD I think :bd: )

Thank you. Chippy done a great job of the worktop. We're pleased.
Although I've not fully finished oiling - apparently with real wood it's something you have to do fairly regularly (every 3 months?)

That's just a British fridge. Actually, that is a big fridge. Normally those size units in the UK are half fridge and half freezer - that's all fridge.
I'm stunned none of the Americans even noticed with washing machine in the kitchen...
Looks great, JD :)
Welcome back JD. We had our kitchen redone a few years ago. The wife did the demo and tiled the back splash, but we had everything else done by a contractor.
I noticed the washer in the kitchen also. Is that a European thing to keep you wives in the kitchen more and the TV for yourselves. :P

So is this new kitchen payback for all the games and models or is your way now paved to 4000 pounds worth of new pic and steam library
Thanks all.
Bigger houses have "utility" rooms. But I honestly don't think you 'Muricans understand the cost of property in the UK. You get VERY little for your cash here - through years of mismanagement by the government and artificially inflated market and prices.
Big fridges and utility rooms are reserved for properties in the region of (and I'm not joking) between 1/4 and a 1/2 a million £. Our house is worth about £250,000 and we bought it for £80,000 17 years ago - an increase of about £10,000pa. As an idea, if I was to sell, I'd be lucky if I probably couldn't even get a single room flat in London for that money.
Have a look at this property costing £350,000 - it's a new build, so not particularly big (in terms of square metres)

lol - not payback. She's wanted a new kitchen for the past 5 years. We're just in a position to be able to afford to do it. A new PC is on the cards for next year - no worries there. As for my Steam Library, I'm very saddened to see I couldn't buy much (if anything) in the sale because I had so many :crazy2:

Not too odd on houses from that era. Makes sense to a degree as it's less water lines that needed to be run in a time I imagine copper was somewhat expensive.
Weren't closets considered rooms at one time, and you were taxed for each room, so houses didn't have closets. Is that still the case.

Our house is worth about £250,000 and we bought it for £80,000 17 years ago - an increase of about £10,000pa. As an idea, if I was to sell, I'd be lucky if I probably couldn't even get a single room flat in London for that money.
Nice job JD!!!! Looks awesome!
We have the same issue with our house. Paid $167,000 for it 18 years ago and could sell it for $375,000 plus, but houses around my area are roughly $500,000 plus now a days :(
Hiding all these pics from my wife or else she'll have me doing the same thing here. ::)
Good to have you back, JD! Nice job on the renovation; it really does look good. O0
I'm impressed. Very nice work.
Thank you.
All worktops/surfaces are now done...all corners clipped Bartheart :DD

To do
- Paint and fit window sill (me)
- Buy and fit blinds (not me)
- Buy and fit flooring (not me)
- Buy and fit skirting board (me)
- Buy and fit door beading (me)
- Tough up paint (me)
Then it's done. It's been a loooong project but I'm confident that there's not enough life in me that I'll be seeing that getting done again :bd:
We have the bathroom to be done this year (or possibly next) but I imagine we'll have a contractor in for it...I can't see me volunteering my time like that again. I believe in people doing things that they're trained to do. I do programming, someone else does plumbing O0
That is a clean kitchen. The dog looks...displeased.
Looks fantastic! O0

I believe in clipping my kitchen counter corners! Sharps are rip for hip gouging. ;)
Smart looking kitchen you got there. I do love the butcher block counter tops. :bd:

It's Scottish - natural state of all Scottish
The dog's just sad 'cos I shut the door to take the pictures and it's breakfast was on this side of the door :-"
Who's polka-dot drawers are those in the washing machine? ;D
Depends...if they're the little silky things, they're mine :DD
You're a man of many talents, JD.
No camo paintwork? Tsk! ;)
