I always think of Kelly's Heroes first with him, even tho it was probably about his 84th most meaningful role.

This one wasn't hard to see coming, but is nonetheless difficult for me.
I wanted to do stand-up because of him and did when I was a scant 16 years of age.
He believed we'd figure out our differences by noticing them -- how could you not? -- and laughing.
I saw him live only once, but it is a cherished memory.

RIP, Don. I still remember watching C.P.O. Sharkey in the 70's.
He reminisced once about his first big role in the movie, Run Silent, Run Deep.
In auditions, they had him on an empty stage and were going to give him a line and he was to adlib.
He nearly froze when the first line was given because it was Clark Gable. The thought of Clark Gable feeding him lines was a lot.
To get through this, hehad to imagine a toughie with a wise acre response.
This got thim the role, and he brought the snark with him to future acts.
In Run Silent, Run Deep, one of the sailors is crushed by a torpedo which comes out of its cradle. IIRC, the actor was Frank Gorshin (The Riddler on Batman). Rickles was very relieved it wasn't his character. The first big role of his life and all people would remember would be him being crushed by a cardboard dildo.
