I somehow didn't know that Jeff Goldblum would be playing the Grandmaster.
Looks like they're going to simplify the cosmology a bit by having the Grandmaster and the Collector be from the same species. (Also, the Grandmaster wasn't in charge of the arena in the Planet Hulk storyline, but that's fine, I appreciate the conflation. O0 )

I've heard for a while that this movie will feature the largest grand finale in the MCU films up to now. In comics, the Ragnarok storyline ended with a massive fight against Sutur; what I've been hearing is that Odin will finally step up to the plate for a (perhaps fatal) fight against Thanos.
There's an interesting "Celestial" nod in the trailer, too -- someone dressed exactly like one of them is sitting at a bar on Skarro with the Valkyrie -- which has ties to the Infinity Stone plot. For that matter, so does the Grandmaster, although his stone in the comics (the Mind Stone) is currently embedded in the head of the Vision. (Thanos already had it, gave it to Loki for the scepter, and so on from there.)
I'm also wondering if the "Valkyrie" character will end up taking the place of the Hulk's freed gladiator wife from Planet Hulk. Valk (a much blonder version) was originally introduced in the Hulk comics, and teamed up on the Defenders with him occasionally. That would be an interesting way to blend two quite different story streams.
I'm expecting a Guardians tie-in, leading up to the Infinity Wars movies.
Yeah, Thor will pick-up Groot and beat the hell outta Hulk with him. Oh, wait. He's still a baby Groot. Well, maybe he'll stick him in the eye with him instead. :2funny:

James Gunn has already hinted at a tie-in. For that matter, the first Guardians tie-in (directed by Gunn himself) was an after-credit to Thor 2.

So far they've verged off from canon quite a bit while nodding to the original stories. (Civil War being a recent high profile case in point.) Planet Hulk will only tangentially resemble canon; the same seems true of Ragnarok, which will be folded into the Infinity War storyline -- itself very different in setup so far from canon (and probably also in execution to come).

Well I didn't see Spiderman yet however after the darkness of CA:CW and Dr Strange I'm OK if they switch gears a bit.
That said, I can't see how they can "soften" the destruction of Asgard and having the main antagonist being the god of death...I think there's too much heavy here to go completely Antman.

Taking my son to the 3D version Saturday afternoon for his birthday. Not sure 3D is always worth it but I'm going to bet this will be a good movie for that tech.

Saw it today and I gotta say it'd be really hard to do a superhero movie better than this one. I was afraid they were going to turn Thor into a stand-up comic but while it is very funny in places it quickly switches from funny to dramatic to sad in a couple of places without missing a beat. Lots of moving pieces and lots of characters but everybody works into the film well and gets some good scenes and facetime/ personal story stuff. Great action scenes, even better fight scenes, and Thor vs Hulk is a classic. And an ending I totally didn't see coming that I didn't like but, leaves you really wondering what's coming next in the Marvel Universe. Couple of good cameos and two end scenes-don't miss them and Kate Blanchard is the sexiest bad God you've EVER. And Valkyrie is totally a badass. I'd have to look real hard to find something I didn't like. That's why I'd give it a solid 9 outta 10. My 2 cents. :bd:
Agree with sir slash. Probably the most fun I've had with the MCU in a long while. Not too much weakness here and the humor never felt overly forced. Plus the cameo during the scene on the square was cinematic gold.
Forgot what for some of you will be THE selling point. We get a 'Hulk-Butt' scene. ??? If this does sell you on going, probably swing by your therapist just after.
Excellent flick. One of the top MCU movies. Far and away the best of the Thors. In fact, the first really good Thor.

Agreed, although Dad and Bro and I had to sit too close which made a lot of the action incomprehensible.
I was surprised that the "Thor 3" retro 80s commercial that Marvel (or someone?) did for the film, actually fit the general tone of the music. It was very Vangelis (or maybe TangDream).
Saw it the Sunday after it came out. Loved every minute of it. A pity it took Marvel three tries before they came up with a Thor film that was actually good, but I'll take it.
Finally got to see it this afternoon. Great movie. Both kids and wife liked it, so that's always a big plus. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston have nailed their roles since they were first introduced.
And Tessa Thompson is absolutely hot, second only to ScarJo in the MCU.
Any film that can work Hulk-Butt into a scene has got to be taken seriously.

I think Thor is so good because the Director, Taiki Waititi, is a very good storyteller.
Looked up his other film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and it shows the same careful mix of humor, adventure, and pathos.
If you liked Thor, you might like Wilderpeople.

As usual, the MCU stays pretty faithful to the heroes and their origins but changes the storylines they're borrowing from around. A lot. And often changes the villains around a lot, too. (The Red Skull being one exception.)
Case in point, Surtur was the Big Bad of the original Ragnarok comics story (so far as I recall), but here he's kind of a comic relief villain who ends up as a convenient way to dispose of the movie's villain Hela (and to shake up the MCU status quo before Avengers 3). The divergences are almost as far as the "Age of Ultron" or "Civil War" plotlines. (Although the "Planet Hulk" plotline in the film goes even farther off base.)
That isn't a complaint, really, just an observation along the way to introducing some comments on the adaptation of the classic Thor villain Hela. Which is awesome, we all know that, but I noticed that they changed her quite a bit and I was going to comment on how she's also barely kind-of an adaptation of another classic Thor villain Amora the Enchantress (in her association with Scourge the Executioner, and some of her flirty-aggressive attitude which is unusual for Hela so far as I recall).
But then this guy made a much more in-depth video about her character compositing. Good job, heretofore unheard of Youtube guy! I'll be looking into his other videos soon. They pass geek spec nicely, and are well-produced. :bd:
A cool idea that's only barely hinted at in the film, but which was originally a more explicit plotline, is that Hela was originally imprisoned somewhere by Odin (in "hel" maybe or Niffleheim one of the "heims" I don't recall which, Niffle is where the frost giants live so not there -- or maybe it was there and that would explain the rumors of Hela being Loki's mom in the story), not quite the same place in Marvel comics canon), she broke out, Odin sent in the Valkyries to weaken her enough for him to take down and this time imprison her in his soul. That's why she escapes again once [spoilers] happen and would also be a MCU explanation for the plot-convenient Odinsleep where he has to recharge his energy from Asgard occasionally: they both draw power from Asgard (but not Thor apparently? -- I couldn't tell at the end if we should expect him to be powered down now.)
The director reportedly explains this in an interview somewhere. O0
