2017 is the year of Stephen King adaptations
They took a short story that was made into a movie and are now trying to turn it into a series? ??? :idiot2:
Is there really that much more to the story that won't ruin the original concept?

Okay, so this caught my eye the other day (on a site that shall not be named, lol), and I had no idea it was out there. It caught my attention because I loved the movie by the same name. It is by far the best Stephen King movie ever made, which admittedly is a very low bar to hurdle, but nevertheless is amazing and horrific in so many ways - especially the theatrical release ending.
TL;DR;JP:(lol) I was expecting more of that awesomeness in this, but this TV series is more along the lines of what a Stephen King movie really is - cool idea, executed poorly, with a few bright spots.
The good: the 'mist' effects are awesome. I can almost imagine how cocooned one must feel while in it, and how easy it would be to get lost, even after walking but a few steps. They did that brilliantly. There's a couple of gore moments that are spectacular (and surprising). The actors all have a 'normal' person feel to them - there's some REALLY average-looking people in this, and one thing I cannot stand in movies or TV series is where everyone is a supermodel; that's not AT ALL normal and it takes me completely out of the story they're trying to weave. Here, the actors feel real. There's cursing, which people would of course do.
The bad: the movie made the mist feel like it was its very own ecosystem, and it was very active. The TV series makes it feel nowhere like that - there's several scenes where only one thing comes along. There's some weird man-shaped black mist that comes along and kills things, and that's pretty WTF to me. People are able to run around in it far too long, because the mist is pretty damn sparsely populated. The cursing edits out 'fuck' which is obviously said several times; they just mute it for some reason. I never got that. Like on Wil Wheaton's TableTop series - you can say 'pussy,' 'dick,' 'asshole,' and 'goddammit,' but you can't say 'shit' or 'fuck.' That makes absolutely no sense to me.
It's got my attention well enough to watch the remaining episodes as I do something else. I just re-watched the movie and it still strikes me as one of the better-made horror movies, because whomever decided to do it with the ending it had must have had brass balls. I can only imagine the Hollywood executives wanted a shiny happy ending (and indeed, they filmed an alternate ending, but it wasn't released in the theaters). I highly respect this movie and its makers for doing something like that.

Frank Darabont, of Shawshank Redemption/Walking Dead fame is responsible for the ending. The ending of King's novella is pretty vague, with the refugees from the supermarket driving into the unknown and only hearing a line on the radio that they think says "Hartford".
When King saw Darabont's movie, he admitted that he liked the film's ending better than his own, and that if he'd thought of it, he would've done it in the novella as well.
I turned it off in the middle of the first episode.
Disliked the movie due to the shallow characters & tropes, thinly made for explicit melodrama. Hoped this series would spend the time & effort, since it has more of the first to spend.
Nope. Worse, in some ways, from what I had seen in the first 30 minutes. :pullhair:

This series was somewhat interesting (as I said above) but once I got away from it, it didn't engage me enough to want to watch more. It was nothing like the movie and just plain weird (even for Stephen King, it was weird).
I watched it all the way through because I drove past a couple of the shoots and wanted to see what they accomplished. Well, I agree with previous comments.
Netflix added it. ;D
Yeah i couldn't get through an episode although i liked the book and Movie.
