Title: Sudden Strike 4 pre-purchase and Beta entry on Steam

QuoteOptional ,,Pause & Play" for more tactical depth

Might be worth a look but at $47 (CDN) on sale it's a bit steep....

This was an insta-purchase for me, but I'm reading a lot of negative impressions so far. I'm pretty surprised...will have to research more before I bite.

Are you finding any new reviews of it? All I can find are bits from a year ago..... a lot can change in a year....

I wouldn't expect any reviews...its a beta, and still has over 2 months before release. However, if you go into the steam discussion forum, you'll find links to impressions and youtube "let's Play" type videos. I think that's the best we're going to get for now.

I had seen a developer made video sometime ago explaining the philosophy behind the development of the game. They seemed to be looking for ways to please both the casual crowd and the die-hard fans of the series who expect a little more realism and authenticity. Overall, this approach made me very nervous and uncomfortable, but they did seem to be coming up with some reasonable ways to placate both groups. For instance, several of the more "gamey" features could be turned off in the settings menu. Its possible that a lot of the complaints are coming from the more grogish crowd who are unaware that the features can be modified to make for a more "realistic" experience.

I might be thinking of something else, but was this game not shunned because of its pay to win moba elements?

You're thinking of Blitzkrieg 3. Which has changed a lot over its development cycle.

So...I bought it. It's 15% off so the price comes to $42 and change. However, it also comes with the entire Sudden Strike series of games, which was recently released on Steam. I had just bought those for $15, and since SS4 comes with the series, I refunded them. So technically, I feel like I just got SS4 for like $27.

There is a RIDICULOUS nondisclosure agreement for what is considered a "closed beta". You cannot discuss the game outside of their own official beta forum...no screenshots...no videos. I think whether this is enforceable on paying customers is questionable, as is the logic, but I will respect it.

Anyway, I would like to say that I am quite enjoying it. I don't think they will throw the book at me for that. If you liked the original SS games, especially the first and second in the series, you will most likely not want to miss this.

You are right Jar. Blitzkrieg is what I was thinking of.

I am not familiar with the sudden strike games. Is it better than steel division especially when it comes to realistic ranges and realism?

Less realistic.  Very limited view distance (most units can only see 100 meters/yards far).
Feels more like a classic RTS.

Yeah, looks pure RTS a la Company of Heroes / Men of War. Honestly, some of the screenshots look indistinguishable from Blitzkrieg 3.

Full non-discounted price of $50 seems pretty dang steep.

To me, SD4 looks much better than Blitzkrieg 3.

It is definitely not what I would consider a realistic simulation of WWII combat, but it does incorporate more authentic elements than say your standard RTS. There is some modeling of ballisitcs, penetration, armor facing, LOS, cover, destructible buildings and terrain, etc. Ammunition and fuel supply are modeled.

It is enjoyable for what it is, but like Steel Divisions, don't buy this expecting Grigsby's war in the east.

I played the first two Sudden Strikes.  They were the epitome of the RTS clickfest at the time.  I would prefer any of the Eugen products any day of the week over those.

Sudden Strike 1 and Sudden Strike 2 were excellent games in their day. They offered a unique RTS experience that diverged from the usual build base, collect resources, build massive army and rush at your opponent. They added some more detailed elements that brought them a little closer to the wargame category, and the OOBs were impressive, again for their time. You could not succeed in this game by simply playing it like an "RTS clickfest". Perhaps that is why you didn't like them?

If anything, the Sudden Strike series is the father of Wargame and the entire line of games put out by Eugen.

JH, do you feel like it plays differently from, say, Men of War:AS2?  I guess the question is, do you feel like there's something that really differentiates SS4 from other WW2 RTS you've played -- even if that 'something' is intangible?

The SS series in general is definitely not MoW:AS2. Although I feel like MoW is the superior game, they play out very differently, so I can't say enjoyment of one would preclude enjoyment of the other. The SS games are a step or two higher on the operational scale, I'd say maybe the battalion, or even on occasion brigade/regimental level?  Combat can certainly be very hectic in SS and is usually very nasty, short and brutish. Infantry and even armored vehicles do not last long under sustained fire, so as a matter of practice, I advance across the map very slowly and very cautiously. Pete Dero is correct in that LOS, view and range is pretty limited, so units will need to close in order to spot and engage, although there are several things that modify spotting (such as the use of recon, aviation and even unbuttoning from armored vehicles). Otherwise, most games end very quickly, and since reinforcements are sometimes rare in the campaign game, battles can be won or lost in a matter of seconds.

I really do want to respect the ridiculous NDA so I can't really get into specifics about gameplay in SS4, what its managed to get right, and where it is falling short. I've only just scratched the surface, but I will play more this evening and at the very least, report back as to whether I'm still positive about it.

My point was the speed of everything wore you down very quickly.  Hence the clickfest.  I just couldn't keep up with all the things going on at once.  In fact, SS 1&2 is what drove me to like WEGO games as my preferred type of game.

Yes. That is understandable. It can be very fast paced, but that is why I always try to keep control of the pace of battle by advancing very slowly and exposing enemy positions in a cautious and measured manner. I recognize that it is not for everyone, but I still would not describe it as an "RTS clickfest" as I think this may cause some to draw an inaccurate conclusion of what gameplay is actually like.

JH, has SS4 pulled you away from Steel Division 44? If so, that would be a pretty strong indication of its quality.  I literally cannot tear myself away from SD44 -- it's taken up all my free gaming time since it launched from Early Access.

Appreciate the detailed comments / impressions. I probably wouldn't have given SS4 much thought, to be honest, but your comments have made me intrigued...

It has only pulled me away from SD44 because its new and shiny. I wouldn't say its pulled me away because its inherently a better game. Again, there is a lot I would like to say about SS4, but I'm hamstrung due to the NDA. I plan on playing around more tonight.

One could play Sudden Strike with this:

QuoteI posted this before for Airland Battle (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=12733.0-)

I installed cheat engine speedhack (single player only !!).  It allows you to slow the game down and even lets you pause it while you can still give orders.  http://www.cheatengine.org/aboutce.php

Cheat Engine is an open source tool designed to help you with modifying single player games running under window so you can make them harder or easier depending on your preference
It comes with a memory scanner to quickly scan for variables used within a game and allow you to change them, but it also comes with a debugger, disassembler, assembler, speedhack, trainer maker, direct 3D manipulation tools, system inspection tools and more.

Download : http://www.cheatengine.org/downloads.php

I suggest you only use the version without Open Candy (it could be considered to be Malware)

Short tutorial : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dZ2okB8WNQ

Run Cheatengine.exe
Now run the game you want to play  (Wargame games should run in windowed full screen as you need to be able to use Alt-Tab).
Alt tab back to cheatengine.
Select the game process in cheat engine by clicking on the computer icon (the icon will be blinking)
Check enable Speedhack (You can add ingame shortcuts in cheatengine through Edit-settings-shortcuts).
Alt Tab back to the game and play.

Thanks to Pete Dero in the SD44 thread.  :bd:

Without giving away specifics, does it bring anything unique to the table or anything evolutionary? The videos all just look like generic RTS - honestly, cannot tell the difference between SS4 and BK3

I really like it a lot. Is there anything "evolutionary" about it? Not particularly, but the unit and map art is great, the terrain is entirely destructible, even down to grass and mud when tanks roll through, and there are a lot of neat little features, like tanks getting mired in Russian mud, weather effects (ie. rain, fog, snow), the ability to treat wounded infantry with combat medics, various types of shells and ammo are modeled, fuel consumption, etc. Its a very challenging game, but enjoyable for me. Its still an RTS and if you're not careful it can get pretty hectic very fast and your entire army can get taken out in seconds if you stumble into a well prepared enemy position or get caught up in an artillery barrage, but the same goes for the enemy.

I think people who complained about Wargame or Steel Division being too fast probably wouldn't enjoy this.

By the way...I made an official request to have the NDA lifted so I can post screenshots and videos.

Graphics look very nice, gameplay is a little fast, but the scale seems much more manageable than Wargame.

Any word on a sce editor?

JH can't say under pain of a prison sentence of 6 months and / or a fine not to exceed $5,000.

Seriously, I get the point of NDAs and so forth. But this one sounds almost perversely restrictive.

Not only is it unusually restrictive, but I'm a paying customer. I understand an NDA for volunteer testers, but when I buy something, its mine. I should be able to talk about it.

Not sure if you can do co-op, but it would make sense that its possible since there are multiple teams per side. The AI in skirmish moves very quickly to capture strategic points and supply points so teaming up against it would be very helpful.

Some random thoughts:

  • I forgot how brutal Sudden Strike can be.
  • Infantry gets chewed up, just need to expect heavy losses on any attack.
  • Scouting is imperative!
  • The enemy will always see you before you can see them.

Yes. As indicated several times in this thread, very slow, deliberate recon across the map is imperative. There is really no other way to conceivably maintain the integrity of your troops. I find that infantry is much more useful and survivable in SS4, then in any previous version. Making them hit the deck and crawl to contact is very effective. When I use infantry in this way, I find that they are capable of spotting the enemy before the enemy can necessarily spot them, and once spotted, my artillery and armor can open up. The range of tank and mechanized weapons is greater than the range of their own spotting.

Definitely make use of artillery and air strikes when you have them available...extremely devastating.

So how many of you have pre-ordered Sudden Strike 4? I see that it is on sale for 15% off in nearly all the usual digital vendors like GamersGate (https://www.gamersgate.com/DD-SUDDEN-STRIKE-4/suden-strike-4), GOG.com (https://www.gog.com/game/sudden_strike_4), Humble Store (https://www.humblebundle.com/store/sudden-strike-4), and Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/373930/Sudden_Strike_4/).

Sudden Strike 4 looks good. My main concern is that Kalypso is its publisher and I have been disappointed with several games they had a hand in.

I just purchased Sudden Strike 4 (https://www.gog.com/game/sudden_strike_4). The pre-order items (Sudden Strike Gold, Sudden Strike 2 Gold, Sudden Strike 3 Arms to Victory and The Last Stand including map editors and all available map packs and expansions; exclusive skirmish map: The Battle for Kursk; Sudden Strike 4 Soundtrack; and the Sudden Strike 4 digital artbook) were what persuaded me, particularly the three older Sudden Strike games.

Plus it's as DRM-Free as GOG.com can make it.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the campaign missions. I thoroughly enjoyed them and found them to be very well made and engrossing with just the right amount of challenge. Loved the earlier games and I am glad to see this is a new hi tech version of the old formula. More detailed than C&C style RTS's, but quicker paced than Combat Mission. And the graphics are an absolute joy to look at!  :bd:

Here is what I like:

The maps and units are exceptionally well done. They are really attractive and artistic. The map is totally destructible. Fields of tall grass, mud, trees, buildings, etc. it all deforms, tracks up, collapses, due to vehicle movement and battle. Its a real treat to watch.

The campaign missions are very well done with just the right amount of challenge. I find that I'm given enough units to get the job done, but not too many so that I can be careless with them. Weapons can be pretty lethal, especially artillery, so if you're not cautious, your entire army can get wiped out in a matter of seconds and you never know what you may receive in the mission in terms of reinforcements.

Infantry carry an assortment of weapons ranging from submachine guns, rifles, machine guns, anti-tank weaponry and mortars. Officers carry binoculars, ostensibly improving spotting, and medics are able to revive wounded comrades. Infantry are vulnerable, but if used properly, not too vulnerable. They can take cover on the ground, or occupy trenches and buildings. They can also hide in fields or other types of terrain making them tougher to spot. There is a wide range of vehicles including halftracks, armored cars, assault guns (tracked and towed) and of course tanks, lots of tanks. Vehicles have stats and can be critically damaged. Engines can be destroyed, tracks get thrown, turrets get disabled, etc. Critical damage can be repaired in the filed with crew kits or dedicated repair vehicles. Vehicles also require fuel and ammo supplies. Most tanks are armed with machine gun bullets, armor piercing and heat rounds. Its not clear to me how detailed ballistics and armor thickness are modeled.

Some missions grant you access to off map support which can be pretty devastating. Heavy bombers, CAS, aerial recon and paratroopers seem to be the most common. They can totally turn the tide of a battle.

If attacked from the rear, enemy units may surrender. Sometimes, they may also abandon their vehicles when damaged. This permits the player to capture them, occupy them with spare crew or infantry, fix them and start using them. Captured heavy Russian tanks have saved my arse on more than one occasion.

Here is what I don't like:

Pre-mission briefings are crap. Very basic, general and overall poorly done. They really could have added to the immersion by including useful maps, historical background and context and maybe having recon photos and some intelligence on expected enemy opposition. Same issue with post-mission AARs. There is a useful summary showing kills and losses by unit category, but other than some irrelevant story narrative in the style of a journal, there isn't much there.

Units do not gain experience and your OOB does not carry over from mission to mission throughout a campaign. You do earn points by completing missions that can be spend upgrading units and these stick with you, but the units themselves do not otherwise improve.  You are awarded various levels of "medals" or badges for taking certain actions during a mission, but these are more like "achievements" and don't really seem to have much of an effect on units, prestige, etc. You never get to select or "purchase" units before a battle. You get what the scenario designer gives you. In general, I think the omission of unit selection, and experience for units that survive was a real lost opportunity for this game. Could have made a big difference and added a whole new layer of tactical complexity.

The missions overall feel pretty small. For instance, the entire Battle of Stalingrad seem to be fought at the company level. As noted above, the campaign missions are fun, exciting and very well put together, but they don't really feel epic.  Given the speed in which the game is played, this is probably a good thing, as having too many units at once would be very difficult to manage effectively.

Sight ranges. What else can I say? If there is one thing that can sink this otherwise very good game, its the terrible sight rules. Units have weapons with acceptable range envelopes, but with respect to direct fire weapons, they can only target what they can see, and spotting is so abysmal. Terrain, elevation, weather, etc. doesn't have any obvious effect on this either. Its very frustrating when your tanks are getting nailed by an anti-tank gun that you know is a few feet in front of you, and your tank won't fire back because it can't see the attacker.  Infantry has better sight range than tanks, so combined arms tactics becomes critical. Not in and of itself a bad thing, because such a strategy is authentic, but the way the sight rules work can make for some gamey tactics.

Unit facing can be controlled but the formation controls are very poor. You can roughly group units together when issuing move orders, but I haven't discovered any option to have units form up in line, column, wedge, echelon, etc. This would have been a simple, and very welcome addition.

On the console version, there is a rudimentary mechanism for formation control.. probably the same as the PC "hold and drag in a particular direction", and that is the depth to which you "drag" in any direction. The formation can go from a wide line, clustered multi-line "box", to a two vehicle column. This apply more analogue stick as you hold the 'O' button, can be tricky to pull off the formation you want in the heat of action. I presume there is a similar mechanism on the PC, involving click and dragging perhaps? It's not ideal, but you can go from line to column if you're particularly nimble enough :)

Yes. There is something similar on pc,  and rudimentary is one way of putting it. I dont find it effective or really that useful.  Maybe I'm not using it right?

IIRC in order to keep your armour moving in a column down a road, say, you have to get them into column formation first and then your move or attack-move order also would require you to select the column formation again..

I don't think the tools are there to keep efficient formation, but there is at least some sort of formation control, if you want to line up your armour on a ridge or your arty etc.. using an analogue thumbstick to position 88's, and unlimber them and then make sure their facing is correct can be a bit of a ball ache. I suspect using the PC version here would help a bit. Grouping them all, and giving a group unlimber doesn't seem to work that well on the console.

I've enjoyed what I've played of it, the "multiplayer" leaves a bit to be desired at the moment (on the consoles at least).

It:

1) Only has 4 small maps, with about 6 bases on it (some field stations, some railway stations - for bringing in reinforcements in groups of 5, some beach locations bringing in single units)

2) No private match setup for comp stomps with friends - always being jumped in by random strangers

3) Networking (on consoles) seems a bit flakey, sometimes a co-op game can split, and you'll be in seperate games mid-game

4) Swarm reinforcement camps, to drain the CPU dry

I fired up Sudden Strike 4 yesterday to give it a try. I began with the Tutorials. I can't quite put my finger on it, but *something* about the Tutorial really irritated me. So much so that I didn't finish the Tutorials or play a game. I exited it and haven't fired it up since.

I will probably give it another try sometime, but I've got other games to play that I have found more enjoyable.

That's odd...tutorial was pretty brief and non-offensive in my view.

I would just jump into the campaign and see how you feel. I don't think the tutorial is a necessary prerequisite to playing the game anyway.

I am liking the SP campaigns. Skirmish is not my thing though.

I ran across this video that might throw some light on Sudden Strike 4 for you:

As for whether Kinguin is legit or not, I don't know. But I don't buy games from Kinguin to be on the safe side.

And those Pz IVGs are none too historical, neither...

SS4 wears its video-gamey-ness on its sleeve. It's definitely fun, but not the place to go for strict fidelity to historical detail...

New patch adds 360 degrees of camera rotation and increased zoom out range. I haven't tried it out yet, but these two major additions could be significant game changers.

Wow -- the lack of full rotational camera was a major gripe of mine. This is good news.

New camera controls make the game much more enjoyable. The zoom is still too close for my tastes, but still happy to see an improvement. I've also noticed that solo skirmish play is a much improved experience since I last played.
