Title: 2017 Steam Summer Sale
Post by: Greybriar on June 11, 2017, 06:44:07 PM
This year's Steam Summer Sale will run from June 22 to July 5 according to PC Gamer (http://www.pcgamer.com/this-years-steam-summer-sale-dates-have-leaked-apparently/).

You are not getting Farming Simulator 170 or whatever it is.

I am excited for a handful of games but they are all coming out later in the year: Vampyr, Shadow of War, Wolfenstein 2, Battletech...

I like that decisiveness, Gus.

Please, please, please, JD, don't get any Farming Simulator games!

I mean, GOAT Simulator, maybe...

Some people enjoy seeing you beg, but you won't have to worry about that with me. Ain't nobody got time for games here. All the ones I want are too expensive anyway.

I'd rather play Stratego than Farming Simulator.

Hmmm Steam Sale...and payday is coming  :o

However I do have a near antique machine, so I might want to start considering my options for upgrade.

That said there's a few goodies I would like.
Hegemony III for starters and The Eagle King
maybe some DLC for CK II
Utopia for Stellaris.

But I have been just meh on sales lately.  Part of it is (upgrade) and the other part is I find myself with too many games  :o

I know a farmer who likes to play 'Gaming Simulator 2017'. That's the game where you sit around in your BVD's and try to figure-out how to eat Cheetos and not get orange powder all over your keyboard and mouse. He's pretty good at it too. But his pun-abilities are sub-par.

I have 138 items on my wishlist, and I go through it at times wondering why the hell I added some of them.

What sucks is my son's about to start college so I'm replacing one bloodsucking institution with another, and don't really have the funds for it.

Not that this has stopped me in the past.

I bought Hard West, Challenge of the Five Realms, and the Ravenloft D&D pack (Strahd's Possession and something else, I can't recall its title offhand) just last week.

I have 458 games on Steam right now. I have no business buying more. BUT I CAN'T STOP. MUST HAVE THEM ALL. ALL FOR SALE, ALL FOR SALE

i really need a Steam Time Bubble devise  :-\

when the device is powered up, the time in the bubble is running 100x slower by some strange quantum mechanics effects on the spacetime continuum
so 8h playtime (probably single player only cause of Quantum entanglement) inside is only less the 5min in reallife.
(of course i age 8h inside the bubble and the energy consumption of the PC is also from 8h, so the devise needs a tough powerbank like seen in use for rail guns to operate)

This sale kinda sucks.

Not to mention some of the things on sale aren't showing up as the advertised price in their store page but seem to be okay once you add them to your cart.

Example: Jotun is advertised at $4.94, but on the store page, it's $14.99. Add to cart and it's $4.94. Weird.

Yeah, I added a few things to my cart and went back to look at it, and ALL the games went back to full price. They're having some issues. You'd think they'd learn from past experiences...

I never try to buy during the first day of a Steam sale. There are always problems.

^ Good idea. I was just thinking there's no way in hell I'm inputting CC info if they're being this buggy now. Stuff can wait in my cart anyway.

I guess the sale doesn't entirely suck; there's a few things that kept popping up on my wishlist that weren't there a few minutes ago. Best to wait like y'all are saying.

I've expected Steam to have recovered by now.

You'd think that after so many years in business and so many billions (or is it trillions by now) of bucks, they'd have learned by now to prepare for it.

Kind of curious what games people have their eyes on, might give me some ideas. I put myself on a $50 limit......gonna demonstrate some self discipline. :peace:

I'm hopeful the Crusade expansion for Galactic Civ 3 will be on sale....and Planescape Torment: Enhanced Edition.  Among others!

Disappointing first look.....Crusade expansion not on sale and Planescape Torment: EE is only 15% off (was hoping for 50%)

I'm thinking of Warhammering-up.
Getting the expansions for Total Warhammer and Mordheim I don't already have.

EDIT: The more I browse the more I feel how underwhelming this whole "monstrous summer sale" is.
Half my wishlist isn't even on sale at all (and I've got a pretty big wishlist), those that are are mostly repeat sales (more or less same percentage off),
and sometimes even less.

Warfighter DLC (for Tabletop Simulator)
Twilight Struggle
The Seven Years War
Domina
Torment: Numenera

Other than Torment, the rest were somewhere around $5 each.  Can't complain about the beans on those!

Didn't realize there are even more official Tabletop Sim expansions available nowadays.  Will have to check out some of the others I enjoy.

If I get a bonus for this year it should be all good...or a promotion, it should be all good...that's two out of three possibilities at least.

Considering I never spend money on myself, spending $20 is like a small fortune to me.

I was sheepish to join this thread when all the Farm Simulator puns were flying around, but now that we're no longer soiling the board with such trash, I have a question for you all.

Which is a better bargain:  X-Com 2 at $19.79 or TW: Warhammer at $20.39?

I know you blokes would recommend both, but my family just got back from a vacation to the Big Island in Hawaii.  While it was fantastic, and one of the best vacations in my life, it was not cheap!  And the job offer that was materializing three weeks ago has somehow been trapped in the transporter buffer, so I'm on thin ice with Mrs. FarAway to spend too much.

Which leads me back to my original question:  Which one is a more compelling and high-quality time suck?  I'm leaning towards TW, unless the AI is dumb as a box of rocks and the battles just start to feel like grinding...

My vote would go to Warhammer which I have and enjoy a lot.  The strategic ai can make some dumb mistakes once in a while but the combat ai is fairly good.  Keep in mind though that combat in the total war series was never my strong suit as I perform better on the strategic map.

(Panther Games has been pounded hard on the forums for putting off getting the Steam key situation resolved. My bet was not until Patton's Charge!)

Foothills is definitely the best module for new players, with the lowest unit-count missions (totally and by average); consistently interesting terrain; early-war bling to train for later on; in a theater that hasn't been gamed to death.

You guys need to reign in your enthusiasm here and get back to my whole TW: Warhammer vs X-Com2 question!

TW:W certainly has more variety, although XC2 isn't lacking. TW:W has a larger swatch of better mods, too (although XC2 isn't lacking for good mods, especially Long War 2.)

The gameplay is super-different in each, as are the topics (and associated art), so if one of those isn't decisive I'd agree with the earlier TW:W recommendation.

Note however that production on TW:W has basically ended while the devs are working on TW:W2, whereas XC2 is about to release its first truly major expansion (other DLCs being bling really) -- not as much of a gamechanger as XC1's Enemy Within, but still development is continuing.

I also have Empire TW ($5) in the cart.  I expect to use mods to make it playable.

Not part of the Steam sale but Tacview (universal flight data analysis tool for DCS, Falcon BMS, FSX, ...)  is currently 40% off.

The standard (= not free) edition now contains real-time telemetry ( you can review and analyze a flight in progress ).

It's half of the old AA:CotA. The other half is in "The Cauldron". There might be an extra mission or two in FotG which was originally Command Ops 1: Battle for Greece, but I'm not sure. COps1 never got around to porting the other half of CotA, leaving Matrix/Slitherine and signing up with LnL to produce the COPs2 engine instead.

(I tend to recommend players move to The Cauldron as their next pack after FotG, by the way. Slightly larger battles on average, in somewhat simpler terrain for the North Africa missions, but still some interesting island fights.)

Depends on what you enjoy more of doing.  Ascension features officer play in which you can start off as a no name officer in a daimyo's army of your choice.  You work your way up the ranks performing tasks and deeds in the hopes of someday being daimyo.

Sphere of Influence vanilla focus's just on empire building from the ruler's point of view.  No role playing as in Ascension.

You're welcome.  In the vanilla version you start off as the leader.  Can't get yourself promoted up from being a lowly officer.  You do however, as the ruler, have frequent quests that you must fulfill and if you do them you get extra gold and other rewards.  Some examples of the quests are; build a farm, conquer a city, recruit an enemy officer to your side, etc.
Title: Re: 2017 Steam Summer Sale
Post by: JasonPratt on June 26, 2017, 10:36:27 AM
^^ I have seen a lot of indications from Steam comments that the "quests" for leaders, as well as other high-level plot triggers, are often broken in Ascension.

Edited to add: I haven't been able to tell if the breakdowns occur even if you choose to start as a leader, or only if you start as a low-ranking commander. This could make a big difference in whether to start with SoL vanilla or not: Asc has number of other things for leaders to do, too, so nominally you'd have a choice about which to buy (less or more expensive) if you wanted to only play as a daimyo. But if the quest and plot triggers are broken at the daimyo level, then you're trading out stability for extra features...  :-\

Yeah, I tried to find it again, same problem. Thanks, devs! -- pick an obscure word for your single-title game and then change the spelling!

Good news, though: my buy-list remains intact. It's just only on my home rig, not my semi-work Surface Pro at the office.

On consideration, I'll probably not buy it -- need to thin down my list. Might finally get Naval Action however.

With the sale close to over, I think I have settled on getting the Sengoku Jidai Gold Pack and the Stronghold Collection. Together they come to a total of 28.59. Add in Fallout 4 that I bought for 14.99 at the beginning of the sale (put 20 hours in already!) and I have stayed below my goal of 50 dollah :)

I might pick up some Vermintide DLC.  We'll see.
That's a pity, Clockwork Empires had potential. :(

I picked up Ultimate General Civil War for myself - and Warhammer TW, Attila TW (and DLC), Mordheim, Steamworld Heist (which is a blast O0), Hitman, a Middle Earth RPG for the kids.

Well crap. I still have over $15, unspent. Just couldn't pull the trigger on anything that I haven't rejected a hundred times before.
