Just wondering out loud here. I don't know about you guys, but I am totally and thoroughly grooving for this new DLC for Skyrim called Dawnguard.
But in the meantime, what games do we know of that allow us to either be a really badass vampire or vampire-like creature, and conversely, allow us to hunt the undead?
I know there is a Dracula video game, I have one called Resurrection (I think) but it was reviewed so badly by Gamespot that I never installed it (and I doubt it works at this point anyway).
I have a few scary games like Amnesia, Metro 2033, and STALKER, although I haven't really put much time into any of them (meaning more than 5 hours or so). And besides I'm not sure that those games are really what I'm looking for here.
Like I said, I'm just sort of thinking out loud. And, while we're at it, what are really good vampire/undead books? I'm reading Bram Stoker's Dracula right now and I'd love to dig into the genre a bit more, but there are so doggone many vampire books that it's hard to separate the good stuff from the garbage.

Vampire the Masquerade : Bloodlines is probably the only vampire game I can think of that people have much good to say about. The Legacy of Kain games were decent fun in their day, but it's been awhile since I've played any of them...any comment I make about them is going to be totally nostalgia talking. The actual original Kain game was basically evil vampire Zelda type things, while the Soul Reaver games were 3rd person action games. The Soul Reaver games are available on GOG.
As for books, check out The Strain by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. The vampires in that are NOT European gentlemen promising sexy times and they sure as Hell don't glitter in the sun...they're full on monsters. If you like that one, there are 2 follow ups. I also legitimately liked the book Abraham Lincoln : Vampire Hunter.
I was also very pleasantly surprised by the movie 30 Days of Night, though the events of the 'final showdown' were dumb as Hell.
Vampire the Masquerade - Redemption is available from GOG. I haven't had time to play this rpg yet but the mix of medieval and modern settings looks interesting.
For books, I enjoyed Midnight Mass by F. Paul Wilson - very interesting characters including a vampire hunter rabbi. Salem's Lot by Stephen King is also a great vampire read.
For movies, check out The Lost Boys (cheesey but fun), Vampire$ (great action flick), From Dusk 'Til Dawn (Tarantino - need I say more?), and Underworld - Kate Beckinsale in skin-tight black leather!!!
There was also a Microprose DOS game called Bloodnet - which featured vampires in a cyberpunk setting.
The novel I am Legend by Richard Matheson is a good read. Better than the movie.
The best vampire films in my opinion are original Dracula 1932, Nosferatu (1979 with Klaus Kinski), or Shadow of the Vampire (2000). Last Man on Earth (1964) and Daybreakers were also interesting.
If you want decent B-movie vampire science fiction try Planet of the Vampires or Lifeforce. If you want a really bad scifi vampire movie watch Dracula 3000 or Plan 9 from Outer Space.

The old Vampire the Masquerade game was fun, back in it's time. I dunno how well it's aged, though. :-\
Vampire: Bloodlines is excellent. It has held up well. I replayed it about 3 years ago for the 4th time. It is excellent.
Vampire: Redemption (from Gog) was never as good and did not hold up well.
Those Who Stalk the Night is an excellent vampire book. Most modern vampire books are women's romance novels.

Ditto - Shadow of the Vampire is excellent.
Ditto - Plan 9 From Outer Space is one of the Ed Wood classic - "its so bad its funny" movies.

There's a ton of mods for it too. Lots of community support even now.
My new favorite thread! Full disclosure: I did NOT like the vampire quest line in Skyrim...it made me crazy and I had to get cured. When I go back t Skyrim I plan on trying out the werewolf.
The Warhammer universe has some great vampire fiction. I actually just purchased this yesterday:

There's a Warhammer fantasy book series on Ulrika the Vampire which isn't "romantic." I just picked up the third book - the first two were pretty good.
