I know the series catches flak{no pun intended} for being the same old same old, but this is supposed to be a return to the series roots

a return to roots, eh? in other words, the same old same old.
(kidding -- couldn't resist.)
Not interested in MP...so I'll pass. But thanks for the heads up O0
If its only for two days then its not worth the no doubt huge download.
I don't care about the multi player beta, but will certainly purchase the full thing:) WWII never gets old for me:)
I'm still going to try it out even though I haven't played since Black Ops
Geesh, I do suck at multiplayer....beta out early, I die almost instantly....hoping single player I do better:)
May try and play a bit later before bed, noticed it has gotten horrible ratings on Steam so far.
Played it and was not a fan. But then I don't like twitch shooters anymore.
I felt like guns were using auto aim. By this I mean the hit boxes are huge. Maps tiny as expected. Everybody carries sniper rifles whenever they want.
I just saw a new trailer for this where a bomber (I couldn't identify it - looked like a Stirling or something) was flying over the battlefield and the gun turret (seemed like a ball turret) was firing down at the streets. :hide: :pullhair: #:-) :uglystupid2: ::)
I know - I shouldn't be looking for historical accuracy. It's not so much about that (for all I know that actually may have happened). It's the fact they thought it was OK to grab a superb mission from Call of Duty Modern Warfare and shoehorn it into a WWII game.
Yeah I lost interest in the COD twitch shooter a long time ago. Even the battlefield series is a washed down version of this anymore where barely lip service is paid to historical accuracy. If I want to play a shooter then I'd probably go ARMA nowadays but I suck horribly at it.

Well....you have a point there. If the same old, same old happens no matter what, then returning to the roots is sort of like multiplying same old same old by same old same old to get a lot of the same old same old.

Arma is always an interesting experience. For dopey WWII multiplayer I play Heroes and Generals -- which fills the generic niche for me and can have its comic moments and even some excitement when one of my schemes (on the level of -- is there a new way to kill that guy who is always hiding behind that shed by the bridge?) actually works or I find my little tanky thing just where I left it or I motorcycle around wreaking havoc for a few minutes or something.
I've tried to find some justication to spend $60 on this and I've come up empty handed. All videos I have seen of the gameplay look utterly boring.
It is fun for a bit from a nostalgic perspective.
But yeah, not worth spending the economies hard earned old wealth stored up worthless electronic money on it.
I have been thinking that money that people earn needs to have a half life if saved, it depreciates as soon do the work and exchange your goods or labour for it. OK maybe that won't work.
What am I doing posting that here!!! Well because this game makes me think of the meaningless exchanges we make that do not reflect actual work. All they have done with this game is put some window dressing on old product. OK OK capitalism will sort it out. Vote with your feet people. Unless you have so much money that you can reward everything. blah blah blah... the ravings of a madman. Sheez I need to eat before I go insane. Just got home. Exhausted.
Wolfenstein Enemy Territory was the best for gameplay by far in my humble opinion, the COD UO.
Went down hill after COD 4.
I was going to get this immediately, but lack of single player information has put me in the wait and see mode. Read somewhere there are 11 missions totaling 5-7 hours of gameplay...if true, not sure worth $60....might be sales material.
I heard there's a medic when you need attention. Quite cool. I heard other things which sounded quite cool...can't remember them though - the medic thing stuck out to me because I remember it from Medal of Honor Pacific Assault which I really liked.
I'll keep my eyes open...but if I'm honest, I always preferred the Medal of Honor games to the Call of Duty stuff (with the exception of Modern Warfare which was probably one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had. It's at least in my top 5.
Interesting campaign footage......very private ryan-ish...although kind of weird seeing the americans speaking german:)

There's a whole mix in there. They did this alot - include scenes from movies. As you say SPR (landing sequence), Band of Brothers (going through Carentan) and I'm sure I saw some Iron Cross-esque stuff in one footage I saw.
Just watched your video - straight rip out of SPR. No wonder games costs so much to make nowadays. There
must have been royalties required for this game.
Also - I'm pretty sure they did this scene in one of there previous WWII titles - which makes me even more sad that it comes across as a rehash with a different skin and in fact the first paragraph of the review says so
QuoteCall of Duty: World War 2 is influenced by the series' early games
well, another reason why i may not get it.....i know my viewpoint will anger pc purist people, but in most shooter games nowadays i use a controller versus mouse and keyboard. looks like this version has removed aim assist features. i know some people feel that is a form of cheating in multiplayer modes, but i never play multiplayer. in the past when i tried to use a controller without the assistance, found it very frustrating since controller not as precise.
i can understand why it might be disabled for multiplayer, but why take it away for single player?
oh well, likely another reason i will save $60, if i can stop trying to convince myself to buy it:)

Weird on the beta weekend they were complaining about too much assistance. Mouse and Keyboard all the way - and clan servers :)
Well of course I caved after initial positive reviews....can't play until tonight though
lol - as did I.
So I played some.
It looks fantastic but my god - the stuttering. I'm not necessarily blaming the game here - though I did read in the review posted that there was stuttering in the PS4 version. It's really bad on my PC. I'll turn down some settings and check see if it goes or lessens. One stutter, on the beach with the bangalore, took over a minute before it started to stutter back to normal.
Gameplay? Well...................it's Call of Duty. It's just frenetic combat. I'm just off the beach now and at some farm building to get a German 88.
So far it's nothing special and alot of the same old same old. But it does look good, though it might not do by the time I work out what settings I have to turn down to get rid of the stuttering.
Well heading home to play although drunk so it will seem good anyway:)
System memory whilst running is fine with almost 2GB left out my available 8GB. All 4 CPU cores are running under 100% - around 70%.
When setting most of the graphics options to their maximum (and the game looks fantastic) I'm using 2.5 out of my 3GB card so the stutter is odd. Could be a single item mind.
Resetting the graphics options to default did get rid of the stutter...but it looked poor. I'll find out if there's a single item or specific combination and post back tomorrow.
^ I'm watching you Judge...like a (drunk) hawk... >:(
;D
No stutters for me, just completed first mission. Fairly hectic, but nothing major stood out. Good graphics ...however, I don't know what it is about COD games, but they always make me a little motion sick...completely forgot about that:( I think its all the jerkiness of the camera as it simulates chaos but geesh I hope I can make it through the other missions.
FWIW.. I'm watching drunk too. Yeehaaaa!
Well, I haven't played much of it because
- IThe time I did spend in it, I was trying to get rid of the stuttering
- My daughter and her boyfriend are down from Uni and he was playing it - and completed it!!
I did manage to reduce the stuttering considerably by reducing Shadow Map Res from Extra to High and switching off Motion Blur. It's still there a wee bit when all hell is breaking loose, but it's significantly reduced. It was hellish when I first played.
Gus - I don't know if you messed with the settings at all. If you didn't that's may be why you had no stuttering. I whacked everything to max - so toning things down was expected given my system
Windows 7 64bit
Intel Core i5-4670 3.4GHz
8GB Ram
3GB AMD Radeon HD 7900 series
SSD Drive
I haven't seen much in the way of others suffering from it - so I've got to put it down to my system.
What I got from my initial play was as I mentioned earlier - it's CoD. Nothing more. However, on completing the game, my daughters boyfriend said it was very, very good and the game did change from "the usual" as you progressed. He also mentioned a PITA mission where you have to be stealthy.
I jumped into an online game briefly and was very disappointed to be shot by someone bunny hopping round a corner. I think I gave up gaming online around 10 or more years ago and one of the infuriating things at the time was bunny hopping. So sad to see it's still here.
However, I did also jump into the Zombie co-op play and that was pretty enjoyable.
So a mixed bag at the minute. He liked it - though he's younger and not as grumpy as me - and I just saw CoD - albeit from a brief play. Online was deflating and co-op was kinda fun.
I'll be playing this through the week and give my own impressions by the weekend.
Oh - and there's 12 hours logged in the game. I reckon given a couple of hours of me playing and messing with the settings, it took him around 10 hours to complete on Regular difficulty which was as reported.
I have about an hour and half into it, which is basically the first two missions or so.....just turned out to be a busy weekend so had limited time.
Some initial thoughts....
- Throughout this time, have seen no stuttering or graphical issues....but I did not adjust them either. They looked great on default for me.
- So far have enjoyed myself but I had limited expectations. No regrets in buying, but I did buy it for $40 something versus the full price so that makes me feel better:) I have always enjoy the WW2 setting so even if not perfect, worth playing through in my opinion.
- It's a little too cinematic/story telling for me so far. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good story but I would rather be running and gunning most of the time.
- Because of the story, I feel very confined in my actions...seems very linear to me and you really get lead around on what you need to do. Maybe that opens up later, but right now I kind of feel I am along for the ride. Can't see there being much replay value in the single player game, which is OK with me since I rarely even finish one time through on these games.
- As JD mentioned, very much a COD game...very loud, fast, and dizzying. Even so much, I get a little motion sickness, which I have gotten in every COD game for some reason...but not most other shooters.
Overall, really no surprises for me...never thought it would be the game of the year and I really just wanted a decent WW2 shooter game....and I think think it has accomplished that for me so far. Certainly see myself finishing this one.
Now do I take the same plunge with upcoming Star Wars Battlefront II :)

My thoughts exactly after playing the D-Dy chapter. However, apparently the mechanics change somewhat. I'm sure it's still going to be on rails but in all honesty I never thought it would be otherwise.
Give the Zombie co-op game a go. Rather annoyingly everytime you fire up the zombie game, it "seems" to hang...it doesn't, you've just got to ALT-TAB to Steam which is informing you the game is running a command line parameter (to load MP in zombie mode). I say everytime because there's no way to say "Thanks Steam, but this is fine and don't bother telling me again"...it really does tell you everytime you run zombie mode. At least if you got the game on Steam.

Single player part of this review mimics my view - almost to a word
I did enjoy dipping into Zombie co-op mode.
