Cool! Not sure how I missed that one. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.

I wish they would cut their tether to MS Combat Flight Simulator 3

Is WOFF better than Rise of Flight? I think the general consensus is yes, but why? The engine (graphics (whilst not too shabby) and flight model) must surely be dated as it's core is CFS3?

Is it purely from the campaign perspective, being dynamic or are there other things that make it stand out against the much newer Rise of Flight?

Thanks

The campaign is what's the high point of WOFF.
Rise of Flight has a markedly better flightmodel, but apart from its dogfighting multiplayer there isn't as much fun to be had for someone looking for a SP experience.

CFS3 is ancient and so I feel them going for WW2 is more a labour of love than a sound business proposal, especially with DCS WW2 and IL-2 around.
Still, if they make a similar WW2 campaign to what we have in WOFF it might be fun, regardless of how ancient the engine is.

Thanks

I'm just about to read a review on Wodin's website

bunch of reviews here...believe in the last expansion graphics were even improved.  i purchased last night but won't be able to play until tonight.  i had version one and enjoyed it much better than rof because of the single player experience but also because you don't have to buy a bunch of planes....game comes with like 80 flyable which is very good for the money.  on sale now for $36.

Just FYI...although the site says you must own CSF3 (and you do) and the game is based on CSF3, appears you no longer need to reference CSF3 during the install process.  In the original version you had to do that (believe you either pointed to your install or had the disc in the drive), but appears now they must be using the "honor system".

But I did forget how long the install process is....took me nearly an hour to unpack and install......guessing if I had a faster hard drive it might have gone quicker, but boy it was painful to watch the progress:)  I'll see how it plays tonight.

I've read the comparison:
RoF is a better WW1 aircraft simulator
WoFF is a better WW1 air war simulator

This is similar to the old DCS vs. BMS comparison.

If you're going to do MP dogfighting, RoF might be the better call (especially since there is no MP in WoFF).

If you're focus is on the single player campaign, then WoFF is fantastically better than RoF.

I have played both ROF and WOFF.  ROF is definitely better in the graphics department, by quite a bit.  I don't play campaigns much, but WOFF has the best campaign system of about any flight sim.  They both have a lot of planes.  The feeling of flight has always been better in ROF, but WOFF has done a lot to catch up through changes in simulation and graphics.  In my short time playing WOFF, I noticed the damage model was very weird.  I could still fly with both wings missing.  In ROF, the damage model seemed to match the damage I saw.

I own all of the WOFF games and modules, but stopped playing shortly after buying.  It has no flight recorder and no real scenario/mission editor that I saw.  Also, at the time, the CFS3 thing was an albatross around its neck, no pun intended.  I always felt like stuff was just bolted on to WOFF and the basic design of UI was by committee.  I am usually a pretty quick study, but finding information on WOFF and how to use all its features was one of the most painful gaming exercises I ever lived through.  It ended up not being worth it and I went back to ROF.  I still have $100 worth of WOFF I haven't touched in a couple years.

WOFF is better supported now than ROF, but with ROF moving to the IL2 engine over the next year, I would expect that to change.  I still play ROF almost daily in SP scenarios.

Thanks everyone.

Perhaps I'll reinstall RoF and see if the WWI era grabs me back in before I decide. I have a tone load of aircraft for RoF...so there's plenty of investment.

As always -  :notworthy:

I have no issue with CFS3. I like it as a decent replacement for another favorite sim European Air War. It is easy to jump in and fly a quick mission in a well populated WWII world.

My biggest beef with WOFF (granted I have an older version) is the removal of the "free flight/quick mission" option. I simply don't understand why they took that off the menu. I get they were trying to adjust the UI to emphasize the campaign but I would still like the option to fly a quick single mission or just check out the various aircraft.

That all being said, the WOFF team does seem to have put a lot of work into doing what they can with the CFS3 engine. I doubt they can abandon the engine without sitting down and doing a whole lot more coding.

Personally, I don't think they can go much further with the CFS3 engine.  They have already had to chop a few things off as people have moved on to new operating systems.  Unless campaigns rate above graphics, damage model, scenario building, feel of flight, and few other odds and ends, I still think ROF is the better choice.  Plus it is getting a version 2 on DX11 that should set above even more on the graphics scale.

This is my view too - though that version 2 I'm pretty sure will be a standalone game, ie you'll have to "re-purchase".

I think the way to look at the new WW1 sim is that it's IL-2 BOS in WW1, versus ROF 2.  Otherwise, disappointment will ensue.

I wouldn't remotely consider myself an expert flight simmer, nor do I know a lot about the physical setup and control of fighter...just a casual fan who likes to dabble in them as I can.  I originally started out with ROF, it was fun at the start and at the time the graphics were outstanding.  But not being a multi-player myself, plus was not a fan of having to purchase all the separate planes, quickly lost interest.

Found WOFF and played it more than any other flight sim in recent times.....I much rather be immersed into a dynamic campaign versus graphics, flight models, etc.  Heck, I am not smart enough to know how these planes are supposed to fly so I have no idea what I might be missing, nor is that aspect of the game most critical to me.  Even though ROF has better graphics, I think WOFF is absolutely adequate and I have no issue with them.  Do I wish it was based on a newer engine and not CSF3, absolutely...but with latest version I don't have to reference those installs.  Could the UI be better?  Sure, but its very functional for me...don't recall ROF being overly superior, although it has been a long time since I tried it.

So for me, it has everything I need at the moment.....

- Included planes, don't have to purchase separate - check
- Single player focused - check
- Dynamic campaign and fun - check
- Quick battles and such - check
- Looks good enough - check
- AI seems competent - check
- Lots of configuration options - check
- Reasonable cost - check
- Still being updated and supported - devs say they plan to keep at it after WW2 releases - check

I understand other more hard core simmers might be put off if the damage models/flight models aren't as good, but those things I would never notice if I didn't read about them in a forum.  At the end of the day I was very happy with ROF at the start and I am happy with WOFF now.....I'll certainly check out the new version of ROF when released and who knows it might change my mind.

Well, the thing is, we're not talking about life-changing money for these sims.  You can try RoF for free, and WoFF has a pretty low cost of entry all things considered.

If fact, given that there are really only two (three if you count Thirdwire, which I haven't played) WW1 sims, if you're a WW1 flight sim enthusiast the decision to just grab both isn't that hard.

I personally prefer WoFF for all the reasons Grim mentioned, but that didn't stop me from investing quite a bit in RoF as well.  I simply don't have enough time to play both a lot, and I tend to prefer single player to MP most times, which makes the decision easier.

Both sims have there merits; there really is no reason to try to figure which is better.  This is one time when it really does pay to get both and enjoy each for what it is (IMO).

Hurricanes are going to get over the "Reich"?  I like Hurricanes, but I don't think they are likely to be getting any farther than say Antwerp or Malta or Greece.  I think P-40s over Palmyra would be more interesting (but that's never going to happen in the gamey world).

Maybe there's a few BOB missions at the beginning? Also, there were Hurris in the Battle of France, IIRC.

Right Yes, notoriously.  Spitfires were only released to go over France at Dunkirk.  So some Hurricanes could have gotten as far as say Aachen.

Currently for Hurricanes you can fly those in CloD.

Yes, yes! A thousand times yes!

WOFF is by far the superior game, if not the superior simulation. I've spent hundreds on both sims, and WOFF beats ROF hands down in playing experience.

As I pointed out earlier, between WOFF and ROF, it depends on what you are looking for.  I am not a campaign player.  I like flying and building historical/sandbox scenarios.

Grim's post sums it up for me as well - I just have never had the time that WOFF deserves. Looking in getting the latest version of it and really seriously attempting to learn. It's been a while.

Think the sale is only until end of month, although developer was considering extending into December.

Another game I enjoyed was Thirdwire's WW1 flight sim....enjoyed that one too but of course they aren't really supporting that anymore.  Nice to have options.

I need a dynamic WWI campaign badly.
