With the Warlock multiplayer patch out (or on the way? I haven't double checked) we need to get a MP game started.
Who's in? If we need to we can create multiple games to get all interested parties into it.
First things first, who wants in?
Me please.

And quick as Bob's your uncle, we have...Bob.
Although you may regret it...............
I am in.
Deffo me
I would love to if I had the time. Going to be a few weeks just to have time to play the update...bumming...
*raises hand and waves it around* over here pick me, pick me!! :o
OK...buying the game tonight, the possibility of having a game with some of the goof balls on this site is just too much....
I feel like Gussy-poo, it makes me all a quiver.
I'm in.
D/L as we speak.... woo hoo..... I will name my Warlock Climatologist and I will wup L.B. Denialist's butt
59% ....... arrrggghhhhhh speed up dammit..... maybe I will name my guy Socrates
Keep it simple and name him Hippie McTreehugger.
I'm in GMT+1 (UK) so not sure if I'll be able to play with you US based folks, but for darn sure I'd like to.
^ Oh bugger! Same for me. No doubt we'll work something out.
isnt it turn based?
Yup.
so we dont all need to be sat at our laptops at 3 in the morning playing them there colonials - player 1 does turn and sends it to all other players, player 2, player 3 etc etc

is that a hint? do we know how many it supports yet?
as a matter of interest my new warlock front screen says - multiplayer beta - is that the same for everyone?
ok - if you set the world to huge you can have 8 rival mages - i dont know whether thats you and 8, or just 8 - do we have 8 gentlemen?

Ok - ill check whther its player plus 8 or player plus 7
Great point.
I just fired up the game and took a look around.
The MP game is flagged as still in Beta. Not a big deal, but we may want to gird ourselves against an unforeseen crash or lost of game and the associated gnashing of teeth.
The other thing I noticed is that invites are issued via Steam via my Friends network. In other words, if you're not friends on Steam with the guys wanting to play, you'd better get that way.
Lastly, it looks like the max size is eight players.
The game also *may* want us all online to play. Invites can be sent to offline gamers but it *seems* like it wants us all online at least to start. I'm going to poke around the official forums and game site to see if I can verify how this might work.
In the mean time I suggest anyone not friends with me to:
1) join the GrogHeads Steam gamers group (where you can easily find me...ya know, in case someone is an identity thief or something)
and
2) friend me.
I'm LongBlade in case that wasn't clear.
1. check

No need for drama. We'll just fire up two or three games. No reason we can't start with four or five players instead of eight. Might make the game pass a little faster, too.
always with the good ideas
Now the game goes MP. It couldn't have happened two weeks ago when I was temporarily single :(
What is the expected time commitment here?

We don't get any cut of sales from Steam (yet) but the thought is appreciated.
No worries. Soon enough things will be humming.

i think this is where we're at now - at some agreed time we all need to be online on steam and have each other as 'friends'
I created a four player game (I think - UI could use some work) and sent invites.
If it prompts for a password, try "gr0ggame" and see if that works.
LB and I just did a test run of a game. It looks like it has to be a live connection by all the players but whoever hosts the game can save it so they can continue the game another night.
I'm not sure how it was on LB's end but on my end it seemed to take a little while for everything to compute. I would select different units and order them and then it would take a min. to execute actions, sometimes several units would move simultaneously. Not sure if its because I had a bad connection or it is something I'll have to get use to. The multiplayer is still in beta so that might have something to do with it.
The Steam options have been upgraded to allow anyone to schedule an event to use as a reminder and coordination tool for your multiplayer games.

Yeah it didn't look like there was that option. Maybe when it gets out of beta? I don't know though Im just hoping. I wish they had a system kind of like what Slitherine has for Panzer Corps, Battlefield Academy etc. When you log onto multiplayer in the game then it works almost like PBEM but with out the email hassle. You just log onto the site and take your turn. Then your opponent can log on and take their turn and it continues back and forth like that and their server stores the saved game turns.
Yeah, this kinda blows..... arranging times to all be on-line at the same time is never easy.... :P

Best I could tell it also meant we could have no more than four human players - it seems to want to include AI no matter what.
Performance on my end was great - just like playing the game. There were, however, fairly long delays in waiting for the turn to process. It is probably my machine - I had several programs running and I hadn't boosted my processor into heavy gaming mode. That *might* help.
Also worth noting is that the MP game is listed as being in Beta. While it works, I wouldn't expect this to be the final product.
Playing live, while not ideal, will make 175 turn games move a bit faster. There's no reason why we can't schedule a Friday or Saturday night for an hour or two, but it does put a damper on friends who want to play across significant time zones.

My dad does like to refer to it as the 3rd World Country of NJ.
As far as I know anytime after 5:30 works for me.
Ayntime after 7 EDT fer me.
Anytime after 8pm EST works for me...the later the better. I have played a few Civ IV games with peeps here that didn't start til 10pm or 12am. It's Saturday, after all.
I have just weathered one sleepover for a daughter and have two more incoming over the next two days.
Further we have guests arriving next week so my MP gaming days will be severely curtailed for the next week. I expect to get some gaming in at several times, but can't predict when those might be. So you might want to do your first round without me.
It looks like Warlock released a tiny update today fixing a few things including multiplayer chat.
Sweet. Has a time been decided?
I think your bid was 8 EST so how about then?
Is 9pm EST ok with all?
^I should be around then.
OK by me.
Kewl. How do we get a game started?

Pretty much. We can put a password in so only people we want can join. The important thing is who ever hosts the game will also be the one who has the save game file.
OK so if after an hour I fall asleep at my keyboard, we can continue playing at some future point?

Don't think I'll be up that late :)
I may actually be up all night the way things are shaping up, and later on I am sure I will be taking refuge in my study. So if I can check to see if there's an ongoing game I will. If not, then next week.

MP works just fine.
Select MP from the main menu.
Start a new game, give it a password if you don't want random people in it. Pass the word to your mates!
Choose the map, # of players etc. just like a normal game.
Then you have to invite the others to play.
NOTE:
- you all must be on-line at the same time and connected to Steam for MP to work.
- the game will only allow 4 humans to play no matter how many players you setup with. The rest will be AI players.
Gawds bless you, you're a Gent an' no mistake!
Ah thanks mate. Canada to the rescue again!
No problem. Glad to help.
We did have one crash, but the second try went fine until I lost all power here. :(
Hopefully this Sat. night we can get a game going.

You can set time limits for people taking their turns 5,10,15 or unlimited turns. I haven't gotten very far in a game but the early turns go by quickly. You can move around the map while waiting for others so you can plan so when your turns comes you know what you want to do. However, once players get alot of units on the map it could take a while.
if you cant win with less than 25 units you are doing it wrong

Against the AI I would agree. Against a human you might need a few more than that, particualrly if you go for another world.
So do you guys want to just use Steam's voice chat or something else?
Hey, Bob, Undercovergeek and Huw, are you scheduling for Sunday evening Euro time? If you are, I can join too - game and chat.
Perhaps setting up a Steam Grogheads group event would help us get it started?
Sounds great Svend! However we're limited to four Human players apparently. :( What shall we do?
Great idea about the group event though. I'll book it now and if the time needs to be adjusted I'll do it.
I think that is the plan, although I will be away for the weekend and not sure what time on Sunday I'll be home. If its not too late, I'll be trying to get on the game for sure.

If you are part of the GrogHeads Steam group you can schedule a event through that.
Not that I'll be playing with you guys but where do you go to turn on STEAM voice chat?

Well, Bob's invited his son to play too.
TheCommandTent, the only way I know of to start voice chat in Steam is to open a message window, then click the big arrow on the right and launch voice chat there. I think you can then invite other people on your list to it.
The Steam voice chat works very well. I use it all the time to chat in game.
NOTE: You will need to be friends on Steam to invite each other to a chat group. Also take the time to setup your voice options either push to talk key or agree that listening to each other eating potato chips is cool and use an open mic.
The Steam event scheduler is a great tool to coordinate events. You can leave a comment to let the event planner know you are going to be playing the game. It automatically changes the game time to your time zone, so there is no need to worry about UTC +/- X hrs stuff. Also check your home page on the community tab and it lists out any new messages or events planned for your groups.
Cool, thanks very much for the tips Bison.
were going to need junior Bob on the steam group too then
im happy to sit the first one out and let you guys play and ill jump on for round 2 if thats ok
Or Bob could start your voice chat if he is friends with everyone. I think that anyone once in the group voice chat can invite anyone who is on their friends list to join. Another important think to remember to do is that you need to use the big arrow drop down menu and START voice once you accept the invite to the chat channel.

no worries at all - just beat him real good ;D
Actually guys, if we are starting at 2100, I need to skip this one as I have a 0600 flight the following day. I could play for maybe a couple of hours but that's it and I think that might end up cutting the play-session short :-[
If we can start earlier I'm definitely in, but if not, maybe undercovergeek can rejoin?
I'm taking 2100 from the Steam event "Euro Warlock Smashathon" - thanks to Huw for creating it :D
Well the time's open to discussion, I just wanted to get something up there. I'd have difficulty starting earlier than that myself, though. Also I'm thinking it'll take way more than one session, and Bob's not certain he can join on Sunday anyway, so maybe we won't start until Monday or so.
Is there a game tonight?
Well, since Svend might not make it tonight and we've yet to hear from Bob, shall we begin the European game tomorrow evening instead?
Right, Bob's back online but his son won't be able to join the first game, so I propose we try this again this week with the following players:
Huw the Poo
Bob
Svend
Undercovergeek
Using Steam's voice chat while we play. How does that sound?
I'm in!
Well, Bob, Geek and myself are all in from 21:00 UK time tomorrow evening. Svend, you're still more than welcome to join in (I hope you do) but we'll start regardless.
Looking forward to this!

I got overexcited! It actually starts tonight, heh. I showed up at 9 and everything! ;D
Warlock.
Warlock. WARLOCK!
It was actually quite funny. Huw was all psyked up are ready to go.....24 hours too early..... ;D
I had to go have a lie down afterwards!
We just got a few turns of our first MP game in, and its good fun - continuing tomorrow night!
indeed - bobs a hustler, forever complaining about no units until Huw walked into his Grand Army! Huws an undead master, always threatening to jump in just as youre about to finish off an AI mage, and we're all obsessed with pumpkin patches - good times - looking forward to tomorrow
(snigger)....
Yeah it was ace, I can't wait for this evening's session! We never did catch that bloody ogre did we?
The Steam voice chat worked well too, despite Undercovergeek apparently playing at the bottom of a well. :D
That's great guys.

lmao - as i said, its me gaming mansion that provides such an echoey background - ill have a look at the set up before tonight
It's no bother, but I think Bob just picked up one of those £5 headsets from Tesco and it seemed to work well enough. :)
how else could we hear him light a fag in perfect stereophonic sound?
Bob i hope youre feeling better, Huw hope youre well - ive been collared for an emergency call out to the Olympic village and i cant see me making it back in time tonight - sorry my magey fellows, but i am back tomorrow, even maybe for some daytime wizard-ing
I'll be on tomorrow afternoon. I was going to play some White Star Rising / Cobra, but it can wait.
2ish, 3ish?
I'll be on for 3.00 np - Oh, I just got the Elves expansion btw :-))
Uh guys, I'm really sorry but, having two young kids I don't get to play during the day time. It's 21:00ish and later every day for me unfortunately.
Glad you're feeling better Bob.
Thanks guys. I'll be on later tomorrow night as well though, huw, if that any help.
Oh, the Elves expansion is pretty cool.
2 things..... I'm all over sat night at 9pm and is this some plea for a restart with the elves bob?
Well I'll definitely be online tomorrow night at 21:00 at any rate.
Right then chaps, bows ready, and sharpen your spears for 9.00pm tomorrow. Have we all got Elves now then? £1.99 is well worth it, innit.....
Getcher Elves 'ere...gettem while they're 'ot... lotsa luvverly elves.....
:-) I'm starting to sound like CMOT Dibbler.
How did you persuade your wife to let you splash out on that, Bob? :D
I dunno, I might buy it myself but I haven't even completed a vanilla game yet so it seems a bit premature.
Oh, I had to promise all sorts of things to get that. I'd blush if I had to tell you, but rest assured there is a vacuum involved....
You didn't...offer to do housework?! Hang your head in shame, man!
...no sacrifice is too great in the name of gaming....a mans gotta do what, erm, his missus tell's him to.........
Anyway, when she's not looking, I pretend I'm a Ghostbuster...................
Lmao..... Ill see you guys tomorrow night
more gaming - great session tonight chaps - thanks very much
Excellent game - going very well, really enjoying it.
Yeah that was ace - lots of laughs! Bob seems to be a monster magnet. As soon as I consolidate my position to the north and maybe get a hero, I might go after King Rrat.
yeah i have the grand librarian to my right, currently have a few units sailing to the top of the map to see whats there
I have to say, reading this thread is highly entertaining. :D
Another interesting evening - we're all pushing our borders out and consoldating what we have. I am continuing to clear out nests of creatures to my west, and between us, we are starting to get a clearer picture of what is where.
I had a ship savaged by what I can only describe as a giant tunny, and huw had a nasty skirmish with a kraken! We may look at creating a joint fleet to deal with these creatures!
Good stuff and lots of fun to play MP.
good gaming guys - finding some big towns to take now but ive run out of money building posh troops! which die just as quick as crap ones!
You guys sound like you are having a great game!
The rest of us need to get one started. My only problem is lack of a consistent evening in which to play.
Friday/Saturday night?
Yeah I'm enjoying it but having a hard time deciding what to do next. There's just the map edge to the south, and the waters to the west and east are guarded by those bloody krakens! We're going to have to invest some research into combat ships and combine our forces into a glorious armada to take those buggers out so we can explore again. I wonder if airships would be useful here? I'm building a bat tower now which will produce green bats which will be able to attack the kraken without receiving damage, but with the krakens' 80 hitpoints and +8 regen, I doubt my bats will make a dent.
As for the north; King Rrat has quite a lot of territory but since we're allies I'm moving a couple of units through to see what's on the other side. I'd quite like to take Rrat out but with the lack of monsters to use to level up my units my army is quite weak at the moment.
Oh man.... The south coast - where wireless comes to die! I'm sorry guys I'm not going to make it... Ill be back on Friday morning
I've also now established myself on the map south edge, so I'm pushing west to see whats there. At some point, I can probably make troops available should we decide to take a joint pop at King Ratty.
As huw said, a combined fleet to make our sea-lanes secure seems a good plan, and the green bats would make a quite effective, and cheap, recon force.
Ah well, such is life - not to worry geek, I'll be there on Friday.
Looking forward to it already - sorry guys, really bad time to take a break!
No worries Geek mate, at least I might get a chance to finish my single player game now. :)

Yeah, I'll start pissing green bats all over the map, see what's what. They're weak but they're tough to catch as long as they stay away from towers. I'll also get them to shit all over Bob's towns.
lol - I got more towns than you got bats........

Yeah if I work the next day I like my sleep. I am a big fan of my 7 hours of sleep. I am a morning person most of the time so I start fading fast after midnight but I could probably make it to 1 if we got a game going.

But I do sometimes stay up late.
Wow, cranked up Warlock tonight after the update/DLC and the AI has been improved. No more sucking the ogres out from their dens for some big rewards. The AI heros/lords could still use work.

If its any help guys - we found with our 3 player game that there is enough going on that you can play for a couple of hours and really feel 'into' the game. You don't need long playing sessions to feel like you're getting somewhere, especially if you have chat enabled for some witty dialogue!
This is a smashing MP game, and its well worth making the effort to get one going.

You guys saving the games and coming back to them? What kind of time limits do you put on an evening?
Bobs getting on a bit so we do about 90 mins from 9 til 1030 and later at weekends.... Only joking bob! Its just the right amount of time to crank out some turns, have some banter and get a few stratergies sorted for the next session
One person saves the turn and the next session starts up the same game and invites the other guys back in

Agreed 100%. I'm having lots of fun with our multiplayer game. It's well worth putting the effort into coordinating one.
By the way, voice chat is pretty much a must since the in-game text chat is shite. Also, it gives you something to do while you're waiting for your turn to come around (although I was also using Steam's browser to read gaming sites, heh).
And there was I thinking you were focused on the game like a wizardy laser beam!
yeah...formulating some cunning, dastardly plan - and all the time he was reading Batman comic books!
And he comes in game and huffs he's only got 3 towns! Stop doing the crossword!
Mind you, it is the crossword in the Financial Times, which is quite hard.
I think I'm up to five towns now! Still one behind Hustler Bob though. Geek, you and I are going to have to crush him between our armies when we run out of neutrals to kill.
Ah, so the pre-emptive bat-shit strikes are just a fortaste of things to come. eh?
The bat poo is loaded with markers that my flying warships can see. Your towns stick out like sore thumbs now. :D

Ah but - 'tis a little known fact that dried bat-poo hardens like concrete, thus rendering my settlements impervious to bombardments from the air.

Not yet, no. :)

I fear it was some fruit based orgy that has led him to be late for the battle this evening!
Haha. We were having dinner at our son house, and he (being a chef) presented me with an extra helping of choccie cake wot he made, plus double cream, so preventing any further rapid movements on my part as I needed extra coffee to wash it down (it was delicious BTW).

I can't Fri, Sat, or Sun. nights. Wed. I could play if you don't mind me watching the opening game of the NFL season in the background. Thur. could work too ... unless the wife says otherwise :)
I can on Friday or Saturday.
