Title: Pirates! Gold
Post by: airboy on July 17, 2012, 02:49:51 PM
The original Sid Mier's Pirates! has been released on www.gog.com for $6.  The original game was awesome - one of my favorites of all time.

A great mix of ship battle, sword play, looting cities, sailing and piracy.  It was much more enjoyable than the remake.

You can learn more at: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/pirates_gold_plus/

Now, if only they would release Civ 2 and Covert Action playable on Windows Vista!

I think the only game I played more than Pirates was Elite (on the C64). Wireframe graphics notwithstanding, it was such an addictive game. The Amiga version was OK, but somehow, the PC version did not have the same impact.

I lost many an hour to Sid's Pirates.  I think I have the later version somewhere, just never have loaded it up.

I loved Elite on the C64.  It was always a relief getting that  docking computer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JwmZygqa_0)...

Pirates! is a great game!  I lost my code for my disks quite a while ago...now I'm back in the game.  Thanks GOG!

Thanks.

I never played it, but I am such a sucker for classic DOS games.  I am thinking about it.  :)

I recently put CWC (Civil War Collection [Sid Meier's Gettysburg + Antietam]) on my 2004 laptop in anticipation for being without a modern PC for months.  In the meantime, I am 80% through reading the Red Badge of Courage to set the mood!

So, what's a good Pirate's read?

I bought it.  I would recommend AGAINST BUYING PIRATES.

Pirates has lots of real time battles.  It is not a "twitch" game, but it certainly is not turn based.

I'm finding that real time DOS games are just not translating well at gog.  Turn based - yes.  They work great.  Real time - no.  Master of Magic works great from gog.  So does Master of Orion, Panzer General II and lots more.  Story based games such as Gabriel Knight work great.  But games that require coordinated, real-time action that worked great back in the day don't translate real well with dos box.

So I would skip Pirates unless you still have a machine that operates on a DOS basis.

This was a real disappointment to me.  I loved the original Pirates!

Airboy,
Have you tried tweaking the Dosbox settings for Pirates Gold. In my experience GOG doesn't always get them right.

You have to tweak when using DOSBOX with games.  Everyone's PC is different (display size, processor speed, ...)

Besides from setting the CYCLEs in the CONF file, you can dynamically speed or slow down a game by changing CYCLEs.

Nothing is more flexible than DOSBOX.  The experience far exceeds real DOS 6.22 and an 80486.

I just set up RSR on my laptop this morning.

Ah crap, I thought it was the modern Pirates!, not the one from 1987...I apologize if I inadvertently encouraged you to get the game!

The new Pirates! is awesome.
