Not sure how long it's going to be free, though

"It promises many hours of addictive adventuring, all with a tone that succeeds at being self-consciously humorous in the face of some fairly conventional fantasy trappings." - GameSpot

You are a servant of the Divine One. You are the scourge of necromancers and sorcerers alike. Your purpose in life is to fight all that is evil using any means possible. During an intense battle with one of the great necromancers, however, a demon drags you into its universe where you are soul-forged with a Death-knight.

You are cursed and destined to spend the rest of eternity bonded to this creature of evil... Unless you embark on a great adventure to uncover the secrets of riftrunning, an ancient art that allowed the indigenous population to travel between universes.

That happened to me once. I should check the game out!

The first game, Divine Divinity, was an excellent RPG.   One of those rare kind that I actually finish a whole game.

I even went back & purchased both from GOG awhile back.  They both have screen resolution fixes, so you can get them to work in hi-res widescreen (although BD's map screen is a bit screwy).

The second one.. well, I didn't buy it right out the gate because reviews said it wasn't as good as the first.  Plus it had StarForce disk protection at the time and that was starting to stir up a stink.  While it still has the same type of mixed action & storyline RPG gameplay, I suppose the reviews weren't as good as the original due to the latter part (the story/writing) and I can verify that the voice acting is quite bad for your demon buddy.

From the bit I played of Beyond Divinity, it was quite difficult at a couple places in the first area.   Died a few times until managing to finesse it through.  All the basics of the game system are still there, from the first, but I wasn't terribly crazed about having a demon buddy tagging along - I prefer solo action RPGs because teammates always have stupid AI and I dislike baby-sitting them.  Although I could mostly ignore him in this one, IIRC.

Here's the resolution fix, a simple ini file edit:
Quote

No native widescreen support. In the root game directory there is a file called "config.div". Open this file with a text editor and look for the lines...

// display width
width ****

// display height
height ****

Change **** to your desired resolution and save.

I didn't realize this was part of the Divine Divinity franchise. I haven't played that, but am aware of the pedigree.

I downloaded the free Divinity and may get a chance to try it out this weekend. I'll post if I do.

I think the first one, Divine Divinity is better in many ways.

But you can get an idea of the style from the second, although it's more unforgiving at times.
