I got a hankering for some modern global strategy. Is there anything out there I'm not aware of? Something like Hearts of Iron or Superpower. Air, land sea forces, running a nation, etc. Thanks.
Supreme Ruler series? Geopolitical Simulator? Both series are hard to recommend though.
I only played the original Supreme Ruler, but from what Ive seen of the newer ones, the developer has never done anything to really improve the game.

Battlegoat will deny this, but it has been my experience as well. The games in the series either broaden or narrow the focus of the game in one particular era, but otherwise all pretty much play the same in my opinion. It always bothered me how each title was released as a full price game, rather than a DLC.
You may want to look at Arsenal of Democracy. It's built on the Hearts of Iron 2 game. It's $10 now, but will get heavy discount I'm sure in a summer sale.

At the moment, 'Modern Day 4' mod for Hoi4. Hand down the best modern global strategy game out there at the moment....
... really hope Paradox do full game on modern or very near future at some point. Or somebody else make a good in.
Edited. While playable, the MD4 mod is still early days. They have plans for more diplo and economy.
Realpolitiks has a demo

Thanks guys. I have all of those mentioned and I'll try the Modern Day mod for HOI4. I wish someone would give us a full in-depth modern global strategy game. Kind of like Jane's Fleet Command with nation management.
Well, the tools are there with CMANO. :)
It would requirea humongous effort in the mission editor, but in theory its possible to create a global 'strategy game' in it.
I'm not sure if you can still purchase it, but STORM: Frontline Nation was a rough and ready modern strategy game. It was only focused on Europe, but set in a post-modern era. It had a turn-based campaign layer which was very Total War-esque, and then you had a tactical battle mode which was also turn-based.
It probably didn't sell well as after a few patches the developer just upped and disappeared, I'm not even sure they exist anymore. It's very rough, but I always enjoyed it.

STORM: Frontline Nation
I have it, though not played much of it. I'll give it another try.
I tried the HOI4 Modern Day mod. A lot of work has obviously gone into it. I've played 3 years and nothing much happens. I guess you have to go down the warmonger route...

I just tried the demo again after seeing your suggestion.
Well after I worked out how to do military operations so that it's not so random, I have to say that it's more fun than I remember. Lite, but will pick it up.
Ian C. Yeah Modern Day 4 doesn't have loads going on yet unless you decide to sandbox your own expansion and interventions. But it's the only modern game that will give you full Hoi style army navy and air operations.
I have Realpolitiks. It's ok I guess but not deep enough for me.

Woah, SuperPower 2 is on Steam!? Why does nobody tell me these things!
I accidentally picked up a second physical copy of the game for 50p in a second-hand store. Clearly, I need a to now own a third copy...
Modern itch intensified to the point of me trying Geopolitical Simulator again.
Spent last night and today on the latest version Geopolitical Simulator Power & Revolution.
So far so good. Much better than the first version I tried years ago. Less buggy, stable, more to do, more tips on the net. Oh yes, and a big one more control over difficulty settings and ability to play on after electoral defeat (with dlc).
Does feel like running a county and is immersive; but the combat is basic. I'm just seeing combat as abstracted at the mo and enjoying the modern run a country game.

While a nice thought, I am skeptical of this being feasible. The amount of scripting you would have to do to operate beyond the tactical sweet spot of the game would probably be on par with writing your own game from scratch.

It's funny.....even though I doubt I'll play much, I went ahead and bought some place for $2 as well and I'll say it wasn't as horrible as I remembered. Sure, it's likely got a ton of flaws and not as great as other games, but I have probably already gotten my $2 worth:) Just to see my nuclear missiles streak across the globe is worth the price of admission alone.
Like others, I would really love to see a deep modern day game like this produced....still remember Balance of Power and Geopolituque 1990 being my first two games in this space and really enjoyed them although they really only scratched the surface too.

Corrected the YT link.
I've bought all of these previous versions. Reading on STEAM reviews it appears this version is now playable with the 2018 update and patch so I may give it a spin. Not as in-depth for military matters as I'd like but still, this is as close as I'll get I guess.
Two reviews for base game with 2018 add-on:
QuoteI'm one of the most critical of Eversim on the steam forums and it's very well known they are all about the money. That being said, I have experienced some performance improvements which has been mentioned in previous reviews. There are some 'okay' new features such as the space race, but personally I'm not quite sure on the benefits of it... In regards to their cyber security, well, it's just another thing I have to manage in my opinion; though it's useful to rig elections in smaller countries.
I'm not sure if there have been performance increases with the 'free' update everyone was meant to get, but there certainly has been in this. I still think Eversim are dodgy, all be it nice people when they actually talk to you (email). But overall, this does add some additional features as promised, even if they are a pain in the♥♥♥♥♥♥to manage.
With all that being said, for once, I'm going to recommend this addon to P&R die hards, but not to those just purchasing the game for the first time.
Suprisingly - this appears to be a lot more polished than the base game. Things tend to just work a considerable amount more than in the base game, which is a pleasant change of pace. Fewer slowdowns too.
Now onto the main features - the cyberwarfare seems like a good addition to the game, as it's been relevant recently. It's implementation is pretty good - it includes both new policies and actions you can take vis-a-vis other countries. It also supports the God'n'Spy addon, so if you have that - you'll be able to cheat on cyberwarfare.
The space exploration is also quite a lot more in-depth than I expected. It has it's own technology tree, it's own mechanics, a new space map and new ways to interact with other countries to cooperate in space. A welcome addition.
But, what possibly suprised me the most is that, by buying this, you are also receiving all the features of the 2017 edition, such as GNH, the ability to switch or found new parties and such for free. A very welcome pro-consumer policy by Eversim! I hope they continue in this vain!
However, it is worth noting that, upon buying the 2018 edition, you will no longer be able to play the vanilla 2016 (havent tested 2017) "World in 2016" and "legal opposition party" scenarios. Those will be replaced with the ones from the 2018 edition. The rest are left untouched. I don't know why they couldn't have had both, but hey.
Because buying this also brings you the benefits of the 2017 edition, and some much-needed polish to the game (although it is worth discussing if polish and bugfixing should be parts of DLC and not free patches) - It's easy for me to recommend this to anyone that owns the base game. It definitely improves the experience in a considerable way, both in terms of the new features, and the polish added to the existing ones. The fact that it works with G'n'S is the icing on the proverbial cake.
In particular, I am very happy with the pro-consumer turn of Eversim's policies. I'm sure that this will give a jolt of health to this game's community. All in all - I have a positive opinion for this DLC.
And this is Geopolitical Sim?
Yes the combat is way too basic, and clunky. But at the moment I think the economy side shines well enough for it to be playable. Internal politics is it's strong point too.
But one day I need to see this sort of game with a strong military side.
There are some useful economy and other tips on these boards: http://eregime.org/forum/124066/
In other news, seems like Modern Day 4 mod for Hoi are working on getting money into the game.
I would take a chance on it but, at $50 for base game, then a bunch of DLC to get current through 2018....that's a little too much to put my faith into a good enough experience.

The major problem using HOI 4 for modern geopolitics is that economy and politics is simplified so much as to be almost insignificant. Paradox really needs to make a modern game that's close to EU 4 and Crusader Kings II WITH the military depth of HOI 4. I really don't know why they haven't done this. Offhand I'd say it would be a huge seller. Maybe it's too controversial.

I feel the same. That's why I'm only getting the base game and 2018 add-on first. Also you don't need the 2017 add-on: the 2018 DLC has all the same features in it plus major new features. The modding add-on is not necessary and neither is the god n spy one, which is just built-in game cheats.
I have the previous games from this developer in this series. Quirks bugs and all, they were still playable. If this version is reportedly more polished and stable than them, I'm going to pull the trigger.

Yeah at the moment the economy and diplo is too bare bones in Hoi4. But judging by steam player count, it's gonna have a long dlc life...
And the mod team are doing good things. I was impressed how they abstracted GPD to link to buildings and research slots. Another plus is that pdox continue to be pro modders, recently adding ability for the to make and change UI.
That said, I think Pdox are best placed to make a dedicated modern game which obviously would be better. But yeah i think they are a bit sensitive to PC, which is why when topic comes up there I add 'near future'.
Aside from that I reckon maybe Vic 3 would be better suited for a modern mod ?
Finally, back to the Modern Day 4 mod, it's still early days for that and worth keeping an eye on especially if somebody wants a combat focus play.

You can get it on Steam, but you have to do a search on it to find it. I find it has quite a learning curve, but one of my regular MP opponents - Sauron - plays it quite a bit and rates it highly for what it is. I have played it a little, and like Wargamer Joe says, it is a rough and ready game, although it can be quite fun too.
The reason the developer "upped and disappeared" is because they went bust. IIRC, they were a Greek developer, and had severe problems with the economic car crash that happened in Greece a few years ago (and which sadly still plagues that country :().
It is a very different modern experience, but I'd recommend it because it is not expensive, can be quite fun, and presents an unusual take on modern warfare.

I've seen a lot of people say that - and it's very expensive too - given its age.
Bought Power & Revolution Global Political Simulator 4 with the 2018 add-on and so far so good, though a bit pricey. Liking the depth of features since I last played Masters of the World Global Political Simulator 3. I'd rate it any day over Supreme Ruler. Better interface though the military units are very simplified.
The voice acting is hilarious but I think if this remains stable it's a keeper. I had a lot of fun running as an opposition party in the elections.
So then anyone jumping in would just need the 2018 addon and they'd be up to date with all content correct? I've been thinking about reinstalling this.

No. You need the base game Power & Revolution. This is a separate game from the prior titles in the Geopolitical Sim series. The 2018 update gets applied to the base game.
The way they release new titles and paid updates really sucks, as does the pricing...but, the games have drastically improved over the years and there is very little else like it out there. The way it models political decision making and influence is pretty unique.
Have to say after being unimpressed with version 1 and 2; this version has really won me over.
Cons:
Military combat is very basic
Clunky
Pros
Unique 'run a modern country' experience.
Economy game really seems to hit the spot for it.
Internal politcs is a game in itself.
Definately way less buggy and stable now. Playable, but not perfect, try not to do too many economic decions in one week, and let the game settle before trade deals.
Humourous at times.
And I'm getting quite a sense of achievmnet from winning elections, foiling terroist plots at the last miute, truning a defecit around etc
So, in summary, don't judge this version on old versions. And much more the modern game feel than SP and Supreme Ruler were.

I'm playing the U.S. and created Value Added Tax at 1 percent, got the bill passed and now have $232 billion extra. I like the fine detail in the economy. Subsidize my most profitable industries and make more money. The CIA tell me Ecuador sold a nuke to Syria so I spilled this to the UN and they voted for military action. Was about to send some naval forces over in the gulf but Qatar told me to get my forces out of their country within 3 weeks so I re-allocated them nearby.
The game appears to be the stablest yet. Lots of detail. Some laughable voice acting and English translation but it's very enjoyable and quite addictive. I still can't get the hang of election programs though. I played as the opposition in the UK and I thought I'd come up with 15 good election promises but my attempts sucked.

Sounds like it's clicked for you this time.
I just made some research discoveries in tech that helps consumer goods and cars so I'm trying to stimulate those to cut import deficit.
Haven't played UK yet but read somebody saying it's a bit borked with unrealistic too much power going to smaller parties of the nations, does that sound it? If so I was thinking Gods and Spy to ban a couple of the smaller parties when I play UK.
That reminds me of some more pro's
Each country feels different.
Espionage is strong in this game.
Some of the characters are immersive. Like I hate the communist proletariat workers union boss now. Not just because he strikes again after I did my part of the deal, but he also has annoying voice. :knuppel2:
Oh yes, the only game where I find the Newspaper has actually useful stories at times.

Not as far as I can see so far. I'm playing a new opposition game as leader of the main UK opposition Party and the current leaders popularity is down to zero, she got replaced and early electrons are starting. I discovered a scandal involving one of their politicians and I'm going to go public with it just before the elections. I just also figured out how to improve votes after I read the manual (ha!). Basically you target unions and other key figures, butter them up and make a few choice election promises. Also ordering the census poll (the big one) is well worth it as you can see exactly where you need to work on to get more votes.

If so I was thinking Gods and Spy to ban a couple of the smaller parties when I play UK.
I got this add-on and it's also useful to look 'under the hood' with. There are quite a lot of deep parameters there. It's a useful tool if you're roleplaying also as you can start wars on the fly and other stuff.

That reminds me of some more pro's
Each country feels different.
Espionage is strong in this game.
Yeah, the possibilities of playing different nations are very good. I'm thinking of running a small third world nation and trying to make it a winner. Or maybe one of the dictatorships. I got the modding tool and merged Haiti and the Dominican Republic together into the island of 'Tropico' and used the Tropico flag. The game works well with creating fictional nations. Lots of possibilities for scenarios. Looking forward to wasting a lot of time on this.
I've used to Gods and Spy mostly to look under the hood at some depth and make white peace deals either with me or two others when the engine borks war for unit trespassing.
Ha, I played for a week before I found we can click on the space program and tech tree
I did see where to do a poll. Will look for that next time. There's real depth to elections. Like afterwards I realised that I could have promised more with tax cuts and spending I will want to do anyway.
Have you seen where to click for paying off some debt?

No?
I read it but forgot. Will post when I find it or something about it
Is the God 'n Spy DLC really worth it? $12 bucks for a mod tool that should be part of the game or at least released for free is a tough pill to swallow.

Would you two quit yammering on about how great this is. You're eroding my will power. And posts like this do not help at all!!!!

It's not worth it unless you're a hardcore player.
The mod tool...
Without the mod tool you can't play any mods whatsoever.
No one should have to rely on premium DLC to play a mod in any game. Yes, Eversim milks its niche audience.
Gods and Spy worth it. Ah tough one in a way.
If you play the game much then yes. My take is that if I play a game a lot then I like the best experience as recreation time is a premium, so tend to get dlc for those games. G&S really helps when you think the game borks wars or something.
Like I kicked Syria butt for Iraq after getting UN intervention; but then they wouldn't give me a good trade. So I roleplayed a bit there thinking the pressure and deal after such intervention to save them would have got a good deal.
If you're gonna let the game soon gather dust, then no it's a bit pricey.
For the military part of the game, do you have to control the units? Or can you come up with a general plan and the AI handles the micro stuff?

Seriously. I bought the first version of this game and wrote it off forever as crap.
And you say this is all turn based?
The feedback on the Steam forums claims that even after the 2018 add-on it is buggy as hell. Comments?

I've found a bug.
After playing the Opposition scenario and winning the election, I exited without saving by mistake so I replayed the scenario again but lost by a whisker.
Instead of re-trying a third time, I loaded an earlier save and used the mod tool to win. As soon as the interface changed when I took power, I found that I couldn't re-allocate or redistribute my CIA agents on the Manage Networks panel. I could reduce agents in one nation, show a surplus, confirm the change, but opening the window again showed the same pre-allocation state with no changes.
It works fine in other scenarios, just not on this savegame. I don't know whether this is because:
1. I used the God n' Spy tool or
2. It's because of the interface change/transition from opposition to ruling party or
3. It's just bugged.
solops I've read there are bugs. Not noticed one yet and played daily for over a week.
I read that there is a LOT of calcualtions going on for all the economy stuff so that it's best to do one major economy change per week or several as a package. Wait a week to kick in and you're good. Similarly wait until later in the first year to do big trade deals.
I'd say it's more clunky than bugged. Like South Korea will war with Japan becaus AI has trespassed.
You have bases in a country but they don't want you to move through it unless they are in same war.
So I use Gods and Spy to white peace that stuff.
Military game: You can control units or let the AI do it. No middle ground. Oh actually units seem to have a bug, but not game breaking for me personally. Commandos can bug and not land from helis. And AI control attack helis can get stuck.
Grim.Reaper Make no mistake this is NOT a war game. The war game side is so very basic. But for me the deep, rich and working economy, politics (internal is very strong), espionage, role play value; that it the rare modern setting etc make it still viable for me. I wish there was a more Hoi style war game or more realistic BCT system, but have to just see it as abstracted. Missiles launchers can kill everything except that you need infantry and tanks to take cities. And you will take casualties taking cities.
So I would say this is not a Buy game if it's the war game you are looking for. Hoi's Modern Day 4 mod is that.
But I also love economics, politics and geo P in the modern setting and there is hardly anything out there for that- and this game is playable now, despite problems.
bbmike it's realtime.
Short version- has bugs; is clunky; not game braking yet, rough diamon in rare modern day setting. Is not a war game, the focus is economy and politics. Oh and you'll notice it's pricey, though I think their site has discounts.
nope, wasn't looking for this game to be a detailed war game, was looking to actually confirm the opposite since i don't want to micromanaging the wars. i would prefer just to give some general instruction and let computer worry about the details.
sounds interesting game, just not sure i would spend this much money on it right now, not that because it's bad or anything, just not sure how much it would stick with me.
Ah yes I misread you.
Yeah it's a steep price in today's game market. Too steep. But was impulse buy for me as I get the modern grand strategy itch a lot and SP etc and earlier versions of this were a let down.
Sounds like sale material for you, or check some lets plays if you get the itch.
