The other big news at PDX Con was Triumph Studio's Age of Wonders: Planetfall (http://onlysp.com/triumph-studios-age-of-wonders-planetfall/)!!!! :smitten:
Could be cool. I wonder what they think they'll have to bring to the table here?
Most imprtantly- does it have Floyd the Robot?

HA thats my first thought as well
So long as it is more than a sci-fi re skin of AOW3 this could be interesting. I want to see some original thinking in the game mechanics.
Yeah. My thinking exactly.
Arise ye dead thread, arise I say!
Game's got a Steam page now (no release date or pricing yet):
https://store.steampowered.com/app/718850/Age_of_Wonders_Planetfall/
Actually, being stuck on a single planet in a post-apocalyptic setting seems a lot more interesting than the cliched "You all got here first, but then your ship broke apart and now factions have evolved and you've..."
As I said in my first thread, I'll wait to see what they bring that's new to the table. But it sounds interesting!

For what it's worth I originally thought that of Rimworld, which has since been a major time sink for me as it's so tough and addictive. I used to play the spaceship survivors but have moved on to the Lost Tribe which is far more challenging as you start off with Neolithic technology and surviving to get better stuff is quite a challenge. Before my present game most of my tribe was dead within a couple of game years and luck (and some experience now) has improved my prospects to a less fragile colony.
But back to AOW: Planetfall, I'm totally with you on wait and see what's new. I am not expecting Space Orcs, Space Dwarves not Space Halflings - that's for sure! ;) :DD
^Agreed, although having played all the previous AoW games I have added this to my 'followed' list. One can but hope for something new and exciting :-))

Releasing tomorrow....I of course pre ordered since I am weak, even though I don't end up playing these games long:) Seems like most reviews I have seen have given it good marks...we'll see.
Curious how the tactical battles play out compared to AOW3. It's been years since I've played it but I'd hope sci fi tactical combat feels significantly different than medieval fantasy tactical combat...

Seems according to some reviews, appears to be a strength of the game....
Yeah. I've enjoyed all the games in the series, but found them to all be pretty derivative of the original (AOW:SM was the best, I think). If the shift in trope doesn't bring any change at all in the underlying game play, you can probably color me underwhelmed.
BUT... Triumph Studios does good work and has shown a real commitment to post-release support. I'd love to hear first impressions from anybody who plays this one. I'm up to my Eyeballs in Deity Empires right now. Back to that AAR...
Most reviews i have seen from people I trust are fairly underwhelmed. Disappointing since I had high hopes and I really like the art direction and style.
I can't help but feel an affection to this series, so many good times with AoW 1 and2, but none of the games since have really resonated with me.

Can you post links please? Two guys I watch regularly on Youtube, PartyElite and Das Tactic, love it.

Here is one...
The reviewers bottom line was 'wait for a sale'....he had a lot of positives to say about the game, but the negatives pulled it out of the 'buy now' into the 'wait for a sale' category. The dastactic, in his youtube let's play videos, love the game.
Thanks. I always like ACG's reviews so I must have missed this one. Probably should subscribe. He did a good job with this review IMHO. I did notice while watching other game play footage that the UI felt a bit muddled, but didn't mind it as much as he did, maybe because I was only watching and not playing.
Here's a humor review/preview from Valefisk:
We'll, as much as I liked AOW III I was on board because of the theme.... and because I picked it up for only $29.99 from CDKeys as well. I have watched enough and seen enough counter points that point to the overall fun (with the diplomacy as being on the weaker side) to pick it up. It incorporates many of the things I like in different games.
Nobody's calling it the greatest game, ever, but PCgamer.com is on board. The RPS review is a little puzzling, but definitely positive: the best I can do to sum it up is that they're saying you have to bat through an annoying tutorial and a thin initial story presentation to find the meaty 4X+tactical game underneath.

Unless I hear something else persuasive in either direction, I think I'll wait for the sale but be sure to pick it up then.

LOL this is good, thanks for posting. I think I'll be picking it up on sale as well, looks pretty cool but not different enough from AOW3 to justify $50
I picked up the Premium edition for only 34 euro's!
Haven't played it yet, but looking forward to doing so !
It seems like the pacing will be perfect this time around and additionally very suitable for multiplayer turn based matches.
By turn 10 to 14 it seems like territory will be established among players and the action and diplomacy starts to become important already.
Its been compared to a detailed board game at certain places.
All this comes from YT and articles, not first hand play, mind you.
I'll post more when I've played for a bit.
It hasn't grabbed me yet. Dunno...maybe it's just me. Feels a lot like WH40K Gladius, which, sadly, is not a good thing in my opinion.

That's.... encouraging! Thanks! 😂😜
I've played about 12 hours so far. I like it. The tactical combat is more interesting than the other AOW games.
I have played for a few hours now and I like pretty much as well. :)
I am not sure the tactical battles are more interesting on a technical level, it might be that the mechanics are much better explained in Planetfall than in previous games, but most mechanics seem to be the same to me so far.
Of course, the setting itself might also be more interesting to some, it being sci-fi now.
But I digress! I am having fun as well and the production values are pretty good, save for some of the sound effects imo.
The tactical battles are pretty deep with a myriad of special unit abilities you have to take into account, the classic flanking system you must seek to exploit and the cover system to take advantage of.
I do feel the setting is a little less generic than what we had in AoW 3. It feels like we have more distinct factions this time around, which can be tweaked further by choosing a tech base prior to the start of a game.
I am very interested to see seemingly opposed choices work to create interesting possibilities.
One thing I really dislike is that Planetfall, just like AoW 3 has no PDF manual, but instead an in-game wiki.
I am no expert in these games, but played around with tutorial and such the other day, liked what I saw so far......hopefully at some point can dive much deeper.
I'm looking forward to this one, am just waiting for it to go on sale (which I know won't be a for a while). No offense to Paradox or Triumph, I just don't believe any video game is worth paying $50+ anymore, especially/at least not right out the gate.
Planetfall is 33% off on Steam, ends November 25.
New DLC was recently released too. However, it doesn't look too compelling to me.
I am having fun with Planetfall.
For some reason I find it more fun to play than AoW 3.
The factions are different from eachother and the combat and R&D is fun, not simplistic, but not bland either. It's definately a go-to 4x for me at this moment.
I'm trying *really* hard to wait a couple years until a "complete" version with all the DLC is available before picking it up.
...Or until the base version goes on sale super-cheap. Whichever comes first, i guess. :P
The base game is 33% off on Steam right now.... ;)

I saw that. I can resist, though; I'm not as easy as Gus. :P
I picked this up and I'm really digging it so far. The tactical combat feels like an improvement over the original, though some people may not like that attacks have a chance to miss now. I personally like it as it rewards good maneuvering and not just spamming attacks as soon as you can. I also really like the new province system, I hope they make another fantasy game with the improvements to the engine (though I like the Alpha Centauri-esque sci fi setting a lot more!)
Another thing I noticed that I really like: I really like how the ranged firearm-centric combat reminds me of old X-Com games where a missed shot hits nearby terrain or friendly/enemy units. Now that I've started fielding tanks, I gotta say I don't think I'll be going back to AoW III!
...Then I read posts like al_infierno's here, and I suddenly find myself reaching for the "Purchase" button. ::) I must remind myself to be patient, and wait!
Does this game have PBEM multi-player like AoW3 did? I really enjoy that aspect of games, given that most of my gaming friends are successful professionals with young kids...
Yes it does! :bd:
IndieGala has it on sale for $18.99
