I really hate the CNN website..... :)

Here is the NASA link. https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-finds-ancient-organic-material-mysterious-methane-on-mars

Nice find, BB!!

But we all knew this anyway, right?

But Jim didn't miss him!  He hit him right where he was aiming.  :2funny:  Which is strictly between the two of them and is no way judgemental on my part. We good?

To quote George Carlin: "That's not beige, that's Champagne Gold."

While it is indeed cool, it's really more cool in a purely technical way than what the headlines keep trying to sell. It isn't "organic matter" in the sense that people think of organic matter (i.e. cellular structure), or even "the building blocks of life". It's just carbon with some oxygen and hydrogen attached. "The waste product of life" would be literally more accurate, and just as misleading.  ::)

Don't be a buzzkill. Let it be the building blocks of life and all the potential for life on other planet that it implies.

If the only ever life in the universe is confined to Earth, with the way things are going then the Universe is truly fucked.

According to entropy, the Universe is truly screwed regardless of the amount of life in the Universe. ;)

(Unless some kind of supernaturalism is true, and that by itself wouldn't solve the problem either.)

Carbon mixing with hydrogen and oxygen is rare (relative to the cosmic order) but had already been found on Mars. This just confirmed more of it on Mars than previously detected. When they detect a protein on Mars (which isn't impossible, strictly speaking -- we've gotten proteins from meteorites before) that'll be a next significant step, since proteins are in fact a building-block of life.

What this DOES count as a significant step toward, if a very small one, is an energy source for humans and/or our equipment on Mars.  O0
