Title: Military Operations: Benchmark released
Post by: Grecco on June 21, 2018, 06:08:54 AM
Hi guys,

Some of you already know that I have been working on this title for a long time and now the project has reached a major milestone: the release of the benchmark utility.

The benchmark utility gives you a chance to test-drive the engine behind the upcoming game "Military Operations", a real-time operational wargame set during WW2. The game is being built on top of a detailed simulation that properly models mobile warfare as practiced during the Second World War and puts the player in command of a divisional-sized unit. The units themselves are based on historical OOB/TOE information including various non-combat elements such as supply & signal troops. Oh, and it's all rendered in 3D on a life-sized planet Earth.

The benchmark is free, so if you want to give it a test-drive, head over to Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/821680/Military_Operations_Benchmark/

To further wet your appetite, here's the launch trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWgRzFnLDy4

If you have any questions/remarks, feel free to reply here.

I installed this myself and was told I didn't meet the minimum requirements (3 GB VRAM to be specific) so it wouldn't let me do anything.

Haven't had this happen to me in years and I haven't been this gutted in a while  :'(

Dude, you run a gaming empire and you don't have a GFX with 3 GB of ram? As President Donald Trump would say, sad.  :crazy2:

Seriously though, that is a strange limitation for a game of this nature...hope you get it sorted.

Well, to be fair, the computer I have now was the computer given to me when I started my job here - it was bought on my behalf when I started and I didn't have any control over the specs. It's got a GForce 760 Ti in it I think. I bought it off them when we changed owners because it was still better than my at-the-time personal rig (560 Ti), and It was a relatively cheap way of getting a better machine.

But yeah :'( FML - The devs mentioned for the full release they'll try and optimise for it to work on 2GB Ram cards, which I think is what my card has so hopefully I can get that to work.

Just looking at the trailer properly and it is impressive. I cannot believe my eyes really.
But I also cannot imagine their is a physics model to this and the infantry do remind me of combat mission 1.
Apart from that and the necessarily cartoonish ultimate general style graphics it looks great. I wonder if the TO&E is historical.
It reminds me of what I would have liked hearts of iron to be like.

I don't think it's meant to be a tactical game.

I tried it out.  It's massive and seems to crash when exiting.

This game sounds almost impossibly ambitious. I mean, I'm very impressed by the devs' vision and give them kudos for shooting for the stars here, but it's also a little hard for me to imagine this actually succeeding. I will definitely monitor progress on this one though, and wish the devs all the good luck in the world in taking it on. I hope they do succeed.

I have to say as well, I kind of wish the game didn't descend all the way down to the level of 3D units. I can imagine playing this and not wanting or needing to go deeper in 'magnification' than the level you see around the 0:20 mark in the video, with the formation counters and arrows. The footage of Opel Blitzes zooming all over the place does ruin the immersion for me. I guess I wonder why the game needs to even represent that.

Love the OOB stuff at the 1:15 mark and the NATO counters. A lot less thrilled by the Opel Blitzes...

Yeah...why is this benchmark demo 20 GB?

The Benchmark is not an application to test your hardware with, it is designed to test the engine the game will run on. This means we want to test it under "real-world" conditions and so we need to ship a realistic sized level and use a realistic unit count. The following post describes what data ships with the benchmark and how many units are in the scenario the benchmark runs:

https://steamcommunity.com/gid/103582791461812555/announcements/detail/1693798980346075400 (https://steamcommunity.com/gid/103582791461812555/announcements/detail/1693798980346075400)

For those interested, in this blog post I dig a little deeper into the data that goes into the engine and the pipeline we constructed to process it:

The benchmark just hangs at 68% and says "shutting down" and I have to manually end the task in task manager.

I have an AMD FX8350 4GHz 8-core CPU, SSD drive, 16 GB RAM and an NVIDIA GTX 760 @ 2GB video RAM.

No plans to upgrade.

I'm sorry to hear you couldn't run the benchmark. We have identified an issue that occurs on certain machine configurations during startup and are working on a fix for it: https://trello.com/c/u956nOfH/2-system-crashes-during-start-up-while-enumerating-opencl-devices

Unfortunately, your graphics card has only 2GB of VRAM but the benchmark requires 3GB of VRAM so it will not run even after we fix this startup issue (sorry!), but it should not crash or hang anymore.

I'm not sure I see the wisdom of developing a hardcore strategy game like this that is so demanding in terms of system requirements - ?

I mean, this is a niche game to begin with. Aren't you just limiting your game's appeal that much further by requiring high-end PCs to run it?

^ Ditto.

And the high-end computers of today become the standards of tomorrow. My old Falcon DRX laptop was the moxiest laptop ever made, for its time, and would have choked running Steel Division, and couldn't run CK2 or equivalent Paradox engine titles.
Title: Re: Military Operations: Benchmark released
Post by: sandman2575 on June 23, 2018, 08:35:31 AM
Believe me, I am 100% in favor of PC strategy games ditching the hexes, which are still far too prevalent, as a glance at the Matrix/Slitherine catalog all too clearly shows.

But this game seems to be aiming at something like a quantum leap in RTS evolution, combining the fluid (non-hex-based) continental scale of Hearts of Iron IV with the down-to-the-individual-3D-vehicle scale of the Graviteam or Eugen wargames.  I applaud the ambition. But I am also left scratching my head at how the devs can pull that off, unless they really are content to limit the game's accessibility to those of us with very high end PCs.

Well I've given it a try and it now won't run at all on my machine.  ???

My specs:
Processor: i7-6700 @3.4GHz
16 GB ram
Video card: GeForce GTX 1060 6BG, latest drivers.

Program, it shows up as software not a game on my Steam library, started the first time, screen went black then dumped back to Steam interface. Clicked on program icon in taskbar and get white startup screen saying it's testing the vid card. Seems good. then goes to main menu.
I select options, the video options and set quality to high. Screen goes black and dumps back to Steam interface.
Click on program icon in task bar again and screen flick to black then back to Steam.
Kill the program with task manager. Try to start again and it won't start up, just dumps back to Steam.

I obviously shouldn't have bumped the quality up but now it's in-useable.  ???

Hope others have better luck. I've uninstalled it.

For us this is a project born out of passion with a clear vision in mind and one that became technically feasible because of hardware developments in recent years. This does mean that our hardware baseline is a bit high, but our tech is built with an eye on the future. These blog entries explain this in more detail:

http://militaryoperationshq.com/milops-original-concept/
http://militaryoperationshq.com/milops-original-concept-part-2/

The short story is that current-day hardware is way more powerful than most people realize.

@ Grecco,

I think your team's ambition is awesome, and I hope to see this gem on Steam in the future. It's an easy buy for me.

Has your team ever considered going modern? The WW2 operational-level has been done so many times. Adding helicopters and jets into the mix adds to much depth to an operational-level wargame.

If not modern, perhaps a fictional 60-70s?

The main reason for going with WW2 is because of a personal passion with the subject matter. Another reason is that it actually hasn't been done before in this fashion. As an avid reader of history books and memoirs I've never quite found any operational-level games that evoke the same feeling of organized chaos that the actual commanders seemed to experience. Only the Command Ops series comes close.

I'm afraid that's not technically possible. Even though SSD drives are super fast, they are still slow compared to video RAM, around a 1000x times slower. Where SSD throughput is measured in the hundreds of MB's per second, GPU's can read from VRAM at well over 100 GB / second.

My initial run of it last night seemed to hang during the polling of my graphics card, and eventually I had to shut the whole computer down (as alt-tabbing out didn't allow me to close the program either).

This morning, however, the demo loaded up no problem. I had some fun zipping around in Roam mode after the 6 minute benchmarking flyby.

I'm uploading 22 minutes of my meandering right now, and I'll post the video once YT finishes compiling it.

Absolutely wonderful. I am somewhat of an engineering enthusiast.

Any estimate on what Engineering you want to be in the game, as a minimal goal? Looks like big river crossings would be important...

As a minimum we indeed want to include river crossing operations, the details of which haven't been designed yet so I cannot tell you a lot about it now. Reading the history books shows there are a lot of ways units can cross a river and establish a bridgehead on the opposite bank, even without engineers. So we are looking at ways how we could model that in-game. Since we strive to include historically accurate OOB's you can expect to see engineer units and bridge equipment columns as part of a division.

Hi guys,

Today we released the 20.4.0 update of Military Operations: Benchmark. This version contains a play-test option where you can try out ordering units in a small hypothetical scenario and capture some objectives. Due to popular request, we made sure this scenario can be played on video cards with 2GB VRAM.

This youtube video explains how to draw orders for units: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_Fql859KOQ

Starting around the 4 minute mark was some pretty good stuff.

Very interesting.

Would you mind giving us an overview of what types of orders you are planning to implement, to modify the AIs behaviour? I.e. Movement to Contact versus deliberate attack, hasty attack etc.

Also, are you planning on allowing players to choose the formation? It seemed in the benchmark that units move in an unspecified formation?

Best Regards,

A

I'm pretty sure I posted yesterday asking if this was still a 2018 release....looks like a mod deleted it?  O0

Bro...you posted that in the Burden of Command thread. It's very much still there.

Since one of our stated goals is to create a realistic simulation of operational warfare, the range of orders we plan to include is fairly large and should eventually cover all the 'usual suspects' and perhaps even more. The biggest challenge is how to expose these to the player without creating a thousand-button-UI while still allowing for enough expressiveness so a player can clearly express his intent. This is why we start out simple and work from there.

You can expect formation selection to be included as part of the player's commands.

We have a new BLOG entry up on our website discussing the upcoming changes to the unit order menu: http://militaryoperationshq.com/unit-orders/
Feel free to comment on what you do or don't like about it, feedback is much appreciated.

Am thinking this has been abandoned, which is a shame because it looked very interesting. Last blog on Steam/their website/FB has been around 14 months ago.

I was recently wondering what happened to it myself. Seemed rather ambitious for a small team.

Same thing here - I was again on their page yesterday. For me personally, one of the greatest disappointments of these last few years, it all started so well. A shame, really  :(
I hope the people who were in charge - and especially Grecco - are all doing well, and that the interruption had nothing to do with their health or their way of life. I wish them well.  :-\

Yep, same. There was a decent interest in the potential of the game -- as I can attest because my clever demo video of the original release build, is a strong third overall in views on my tiny little channel! (Nearly 2000 views, and I have something like 154 subscribers.)
