A new trailer is out on Wargame: European Escalation. It covers the multiplayer side of the game.

JH - no word yet on a review copy.
:'(
From the clips the game looks incredibly frenetic...I don't know if I can handle it.
Looks like World in Conflict. I'm stoked.
just downloading the open beta after the pre-order
Is the beta MP only? Or is there at least a skirmish feature?

i am definitiv on the fence
Already pre-ordered and tried the beta for a couple of minutes.
Couldn't really figure out how to choose and/or deploy my forces as there is no tutorial :P
On the fence? Really? This is a day one purchase for me.
Definitely keeping an eye on this one.

My only hesitation is that World of Conflict was so good that I worry this won't live up to it. I so want this to be a hit. Yet I wonder.

Tpek,
can you access the skirmish mode in the beta, which gives an AI to the 1:1-MP-maps... it should be
under 'solo' in the menue?

I think last time I checked it was greyed out.
So far I've been able to play alone, with no opponents at all. Free to roam the map with the units until I choose to "surrender" . :D
THX for the info Tpek
...my resistance to preorder is collapsing any minute ;)
in this 1h video a Frenchman explaing the beta in english. its very instructive how it actually plays 8)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVeNnQT7uF4&feature=related
i don't have seen soldier fighting from buildings yet or from prepared positions?
well, but in high mobile maneuver warfare and quick reaction to tank breakthroughs and airborne assaults behingd the lines there would be no time for trenches and bunkers anyway
The manuals has been posted for us to read through.

Went to the site; moderately interested. Would anybody playing the beta tell me how much twitch and click is requires? TIA
Bismarck,
from what i've seen in videos so far ... it looks manageable
the units seems to react to threats on their own (there is no face / direction order in the game)
...and effects, like suppling/repair, starts automatically just if the according supply-truck reach the vicinity
of a unit
so its mostly: send units to an area, and target commands for artillery
what makes me a little reluctant so far
- you play with an 'unhistoric' wild mix of single units from different NATO nations in one single match
- AAA-tanks can be used on the frontline to 'suppress' MBT's in a too gamy way.
while in real life they would pull back if they even know about enemy tanks approaching
if they are not grouped with their own MBT's
- i miss thresholds-limits to be set for defending (and pulling back then)
and different aggression levels for attacks
(well, its possible to switch off individual weapon systems)
so sending units to an area ... let them die, some may root (do they recover? and try to retake the
position? or flee to a stagering area? can you group them with other left overs?)
then sending in some reinforcments...watch them die... more reinforcements (probaly of a different kind
and to a different loaction on the map as reaction to the enemy) ...
is its possible to group a mix of different unit-types in one group and give one order to that little 'task force' ?
Thanks.
As for me, I don't like the way they did animations as they are totally unrealistic (not not an issue if you play zoomed out).
Also there is the notion of balance. Being a multiplayer game, the develpers have to balance out the units. People are free to buy what they want so there will be no consistent clash of doctrines of NATO quality vs. WARSAW quantity (which is the way a WWIII scenario would play out). This will be based on the player's play-style instead.
Already playing the Beta...name is Lifesource. You deploy your forces during the 2 minutes before the game starts by clicking on the deployment box number in the upper left corner. If you don't get everything deployed by then, then you are bringing in "reinforcements". Having a fantastic time playing when there aren't any connection issues.
It can get a little "clicky", but overall, not bad. It's really a great deal of fun. The manual is very light on info, so you almost have to figure things out on your own. I think the game lends itself to "team play", because of the management required to fight cohesively. If you can get with a few others, then you can have one buy and run nothing but arty, another log, another maneuver, and still another recon.
The fact that it is Cold War Europe makes me tingle all up and down my leg!
Gents, i have to inform you that my resistance broke today around 3pm :)
(would have got it sooner or later anyway...)
please, send me to the war game purchase addicted rehab .... No,No,No ;)
my WEE-nick will be [GH]MikeGER :P
---- edit---
first Recce
i played 1.5 hours on my own with UI now, testing how things work (before i dare to jump into a battle)
this game has potential... there is a lot of stuff not seen sooo clear in videos with all that eye candy and i may have overlooked browsing the manual
- you can chain movement commands with Shift-click (UI doesn't show any path on the map at all)
- choppers can be ordered to fly/hover NOE or at higher altitude
- its possible to lasso different types of units (group them with CRTL and number) and give them a
movement order
now the surprising part! ...seems they start to auto-sort themself in a way that make sense ... Marders (loaden)
in-front of the Leos ..followed by the Gepards when they reach the destination ... but with AAA in the middle while
on the march (i will experiment some more to prove that, but run out fuel on the Gepards... and the
whole group stopped! not a bad decision either)
- units (even single soldiers in a group) displayed in blue-shades are in cover
- fire in woods seems to spread?
- vehicles have path finding in towns (they don't drive through buildings, even so buildings are handled 'abstract' ...so
don't expect soldiers popin up in windows, instead you may see rockets lauched through a buildings wall)
supply and keeping supply roots open are absolut critical
when the AI will be halfway decent, i bet i will enjoy small army skirmish games on big maps a lot
Great recon, Mike. Vielen Dank!
Quote from: MikeGER on February 13, 2012, 09:17:50 AM
... but with AAA in the middle whileon the march
correction:
The sorting of units
'while on the march' is an artifact,
which is generate by: different max-velocities of the units over (rough) terrain, the start orientation,
and the distance they have to travel to reach the chosen end-destination
All units in a mixed group trie to reach their position (calculated by the AI, see below) in the chosen area, ASAP
choppers overtaking the fast APC reaching their spot first, and so on...
but i can confirm, that groups of mixed units sort them self out at the end destination. 8)
... made some tests: i build mixed groups and clicked on a hedge line cover
Marders front line (in the cover, the tank in the middle at the position i hadclicked), then a Gazelle chopper hovering low 50m behind (so the player can let it pop-up when needed) then the Leopards (about 100m? behind the Marders), then the Recon Tank, (which is a little bit strange?, but i hope they are placed in a way, that its recon-range = max range of the MBT's-gun, which would make sense for an RTS-tactical-AI) followed by the AAA-tank, followed by the supply trucks. All units of one type are in line-formation.
if you spare the recon tank (which is micro-manged to better spots by the player anyway) the 'supply range' of the parked trucks is just the distance to the Marders up-front.
If you want to have more distance in the line formation, use singe vehicles of the same kind.
So 3 single Marders in the mixed-unit selection led to more spacing then 1 group of 3 Marders in the mixed-unit selection.

Sure!
So the early word is good, Admiral?
So, if I buy on GG, and it requires Steam to play, can I download it and it will load into Steam without needing to download the 6Gb again?
I wish there was a way to control facing and unit formation. It is somewhat bothersome to see my disorganized units clumped in the middle of a city or not evenly spaced along a hedgerow. I also need some kind of pop-up window telling me when units are running low on fuel/ammo! Otherwise, I'm going to like this game a lot, I think.
That being said, I haven't quite figured out how to balance the job of organizing my forces, moving them around the field, attacking/defending against the enemy, managing supply, calling for reinforcements, etc., all at the same time. I have a sinking feeling I'm really going to suck at MP.

Just enter the serial code into Steam, AFAIK. Skip the GG download step. You can also do this with games on EA's Origin program (like Mass Effect, etc.).
QuoteOtherwise, I'm going to like this game a lot, I think.
This is all I needed to hear to get me very interested! ;D
The trailers make the game look like it's quite unrealistic, even for an RTS, particularly the infantry just running around shooting at things.
So I'm still not convinced that it's worth the money. Comparing it to World in Conflict is high praise, though.
The rather generic name also isn't really appealing, but that's a minor issue.

I played the game for about two hours straight last night and had an absolute blast. It is not uber realistic, but the developers never claimed it to be the next WitE (cold War Style). The game is just fun...plain and simple. It has a great Cold War atmosphere, and the TO&E is large and authentic. The units don't necessarily function realistically (the realism is more abstracted in the game), but where else can mix up several different variants of Leopards, Saracens, Marders, Fuchs, etc. It is a very strategic game in terms of combined arms warfare and logistics. The AI is aggressive and the game is very challenging.
If you do not like RTS games, you probably won't like this...but still, it is fantastic for what it is.
+1 with JH.
From the little I've played it's an RTS first and wargame second. But that isn't a bad thing at all.
From what I've seen, it lacks some of the sleek UI that World in Conflict had, but that's fine.
My video card has been trying to die on me so I don't know how much I'll be able to play, but hopefully turning down some of the settings will buy me some solid game time.
What I find so great about it is, you simply can't build a powerful tank force and send it in there alone to smash the enemy. They'll get chewed up by a mix of enemy armor, infantry and rotary craft. Rather, you need to prepare your force and construct it wisely. Include a recon element with a couple tank platoons supported by mechanized infantry, AAA and supplies...do not ever forget to bring supplies. Even with a wisely thought out combined force, it still cannot operate out in the field indefinitely with impunity. The flow of supplies must be constant and fresh reinforcements regularly don't hurt either. This is a key authentic element that I feel separates W:EE from the other RTS games out there. In most RTS games, you can build a cluster of strong units and just rampage across the map with them. You just cannot do that in W:EE.
Also, until you've really advanced and taken some ground, your rear FOB is never entirely safe because the maps are large and reinforcement entry points vary widely, so you could have enemies coming in from your left flank, your right flank, the center, or anywhere in between.
gents, what are your WEE nicks? [GH]MikeGER
i wish there would be a slider (at least for solo play, skirmish vs AI, and non ranked multi if all participants agree) to reduce game speed in 5% steps down to maybe even 50% before a map get started... which could changes the games experience 'from RTS to Wargame' a lot
a mod / or option where just the speed of all units could be adjusted by a multiplier would be even better
i also wish, that solo play and skirmish vs the AI also get recorded for later analysis, not only the pure multiplayer-matches
My nick is Wargamer.
This is an interesting game. Dialing down the graphics didn't seem to make much difference on the game map.
JH, I managed to get my butt kicked the first time I played through the intro, too. There seems to be enough going on underneath the hood to make this a good, solid game. Not as slick as World in Conflict, but in some ways a much better game - the log element is something I'll have to read up on. Running out of ammo is not a good idea in a firefight.
I like the sound effects. They make up a lot for the lack of splashy graphics.
Overall the gameplay is a nice mix between an RTS and a wargame. I'm starting to really like this game and I've only played through the first mission.
Struggling badly to get it to run at a decent pace, without matchboxes for armoured vehicles, and all the explosions missing. I should research game specs a bit more than I do. :(
I'm on a Samsung R780 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 5000, 6Gb Ram. But it just doesn't want to play nicely. Shame because it looks like something I could have a bash at, and enjoy.

Yes, until you get a feel for the "flow" of combat in this game, you will get your a$$ handed to you by the AI. Once I started mixing up my force composition more I started to be a lot more competitive against the AI. I like how Recon is critical. You really need the improved detection capability of the special reece units to increase the survivability of your main combat elements.
I see LOG as being the big game changer here. I still struggle with it...I do wish it could be automated with setting up supply convoys that move between FOB and front lines. On the other hand, the need for frequent resupply definitely slows the pace of the game and makes it less "RTS-ey."

Oh thank goodness! I thought I was just an idiot or something! The game doesn't hand hold at ALL. It badly needs a tutorial.
Yes, it needs a tutorial.
I think the lesson out of the first scenario is that the game is not linear and reinforcements can come at any time. I think I hand plenty of firepower to win, but I committed to a finishing blow early and was outflanked.
I disagree that a more thorough tutorial is needed in the game. I think the text based tips and goal oriented operations in the first few campaign missions are adequate. They definitely explain the controls and the core concepts and assisted me in graduating from bumbling fool, to semi-competent Battalion commander. That being said, a strategic tutorial, or cold war era combat guide might be fun and helpful. The UI isn't that complex...in fact, its disappointingly basic (ie. no control over formation, spacing, facing, etc.) However, there is some real complexity to the necessary concepts and tactics for success. Here is where a classic style guide that reinforces the importance of maneuver, recon/intel gathering, supply, C3, supporting fire, and combined arms would come in handy.
I could barely tell how to start the campaign (as in which buttons to press)! I had one tank battalion and a recon - how was I supposed to repulse the entire soviet breakthrough?
Yeah, I think a strategic tutorial would be better than a mechanical one, though. Cause I have no clue what I am doing!
Viscerally speaking, the game is awesome. Tanks and guns... it is sort of like a modern Theater of War or CM:SF in real time and less fiddly!
CMSF can be played in realtime and that's how I play it. :)
Still undecided about this. I want to play it but there some nagging things that I don't like.
Hmm, what you wrote about the game does sound good Jarhead. I thought things like supply would just be abstracted. I guess the trailer is just a bit misleading/tailored for the regular RTS crowd.
I like RTS games, but mostly if they only want to be RTS games and don't try to be wargames at the same time. If you say that it's fairly realistic and, within the confines of the engine, a decent representation of Cold War warfare, it might be worth checking out, especially as we both seemed to like World in Conflict so I can assume that we at least share some tastes for these kinds of games.

RUSE is not much of a clickfest compared to this. Not my commend but from a RUSE player.
Did I miss any mention of the single player mode? If I were to buy, that likely is the only mode I would play. Any good from that perspective? Would it be worth purchasing for that reason alone? Game sure looks pretty and interesting, but concerned looks primarily like a MP game. Thanks.

Single player experience is pretty bad. http://www.outofeight.info/2012/02/wargame-european-escalation-review.html

You've had a pretty lousy attitude lately. Not sure what's crawled up your rear end.
Too many games I guess. Finding fault in any game to stop me from buying.
We all can go through burnout now and again. It happens.
I LOVE this game! The SP missions are difficult but not unbeatable. My main complaint is that I can't select a unit and see where they are headed - that frustrates the heck out of me, but I've gotten past it. I am more than half-way through the SP missions, and it really forces you to think about your strategy.
I don't understand how combat works in this game at all. I've just tried a series of skirmishes against "easy" AI and can't do it.
Why did my four gunships get taken out by four MBTs? Why are enemy gunships able to take out my supposedly anti-aircraft squad who were even in cover? Why do my recon vehicles have to be practically on top of something to detect it? Why aren't there any goddamn range circles?! Aarrgghh!
