Title: TGIF - F R I D A Y Gaming Thread - what's going down?
Post by: JudgeDredd on August 03, 2012, 04:12:32 AM
Well - I have started this but will be unlikely to play any games.

I have a long, hard weekend of drinking - it's my annual 1 Squadron reunion. Meet Friday night for a few beers with some people who travel down early. Meet Saturday lunchtime and chew the fat with some other people that travel down early (but later than the Friday mob). Then Saturday night - about 40-60 of the old 1 Squadron boys - all telling the same anecdotes they were telling the year before and the year before.

Bloody good fun.

If, however, I do get some gaming time, it'll be Sunday. I recently bought a new Saitek X-45 pro - and sold my used one on SimHQ that I bought on eBay...but I haven't played with it yet, so if I do get some gaming done on Sunday, I think I'll take DCS A-10C or Black Shark out for a ride. Of course it's been so long, I'll likely have to go through the basic tutorials again (will I ever get to weapons??).

Anyway - what's your intended gaming this weekend?

After a **** week at work and Undercover Junior going on holiday with her mum, its 'tension release weekend' with a gaming buddy, which roughly translated means, 20-30 bottles of Crabbies, 2 bottles of Irish to drop into the crabbies, a joint of beef fillet, cooked slowly and converted into beef sandwiches whilst playing MW3 and GRFS on PS3 til stupidly early, a few hours sleep, a full english breakfast and it starts all over again til Monday morning when we drag our asses back to work. Im 40 and hope i never grow out of this!

Not much for me.  I have to go to a trade show Sunday for work, which means that the wife and I will be getting all out chores done Saturday.  I hope to get some more time in with Warlock and the new DLC, and I just reinstalled Amalur, so hope to be starting that.

I am having a blast with the campaign in Gemini Wars...my kind of stories.

I also continue my Armada 2526 Supernova pbems (many are coming to an end)

Finally, i'll do some more turns (i try to 10 every 2 days) of Master of Orion 3 for my AAR.

So its now a science fiction weekend.

I am trying to play through the ARMA II campaigns right now.  I'll probably try and get in some Minecraft and Panzer Corps now that patches have been released for each of them.

Not much new going on for me but I'll be diligently attacking my usual lineup.  This was a hard long week and I'm beat so I need some down time with my games:

Armada 2526 Supernova PBEM with the Grog boyz
In my 3 player game the galaxy is aflame in war between the "Tree People, Teyes Flock of Seagulls, and the alliance consisting of Shelldrake, Martok, and myself

In my 4 player game my empire has yet to make "first contact" after many many turns of playing.  You should see my economy though!

Mass Effect Xbox360
I'm about 30% done with the game and finding out a lot of the background story after finishing Mass Effect 3 (my first game in the series) a few weeks ago.

Pocket Planes iPad
My airline continues to grow and I've got lots o cash coming in as well a decent sized fleet.

Laundry: Modern House Wars 3 Samsung Front Loader
I'll be sending 3 baskets (divisions) into battle against the hated dirt and sweat enemies.  The attack will be lead by yours truly and the OOB =
1st Basket Division (The Big Red One)
2nd Sturm Basket consisting of soiled outerwear
Kampfgruppe W8taminute consisting of bed sheets and towels

I intend to start Case Blue as STAVKA's representative in the South with the May 12 date and a few set up.  The German objectives are known and the AI is on Easy and it should be possible to annihilate the German forces in Southern Russia in a few months.

Other than that some boardgame practice on Battles from the Age of Reason (Leuthen actually) in anticipation of Fontenoy's arriving
in the mail soon.

Dungeons of Dredmor: Wizardlands expansion (it never ennnddddsss!  :P )

Smattering of Other RPGs depending on mood:

Fallout New Vegas

X3 Albion Prelude

Gothic 3 Gold

Divinity II The Dragon Knight Saga

Once my strategy itch starts taking over again, I'm excited to eventually get into a new lifelong game of PON with the new 1.03 update.   And the same for the recent Port Royale 3 update.

Still have all the Theater Of War games to try out from my 1C collection purchase earlier this year..  all the Men Of War games.. the list goes on.   :o

I'm hip deep into CMBN- the user-made campaign, "Devil's Descent". An excellent campaign centered around the opening days of Overlord. The campaign really develops differently depending on your choices of whether to engage the Germans or wait for reinforcements. A nice mix of attack/defend, easy to tough company sized fights.

Got an invite to do some Flames of War this afternoon.

Then tonight I'll install Combat Mission: Fortress Italy! Then maybe a bit more Fallout: New Vegas.

Gonna mostly be more Civ IV Complete, with maybe a dash of Crusader Kings 2 thrown in for good measure.  Oh, and of course my Armada PBEM campaigns with the fellas.

Actually, I *just* managed to sign peace treaties with both the Teyes and Walden.  My economy is in the toilet right now (as in, my treasury is red and getting redder!), and I simply cannot afford even 1 war at the moment, much less 2.

I don't expect the peace to last -- especially not with the Walden -- but I badly need a breather right now!

Heh, same here:  No aliens yet, but I've already got over 20,000 in the bank, and am pulling down over 1000 credits a turn even building just about everything I can.  Never had this happen before, especially this relatively early in the game!

This weekend I shall mainly be playing Warlock: Master of the Arcane and...dunno what else.  I may pick up some cheap game in the weekend sales.  I seem to be hitting a bit of a slump again, but hopefully Warlock will keep me amused for the whole weekend.

Just when I start to enjoy Divinity II, I run into another damn puzzle needed to finish the quest.  The first two Divinity games weren't near as cheesy-puzzled as this one.  >:(

It also gave me some frustration after installation because, once again, the port-back-from-console leaves me a bit frustrated.  The first thing is that they have the graphics engine set to a hard limit of 30fps and there are also constant micro-stutters on moving.  While I've mitigated some of that constant stuttering (which most everyone with a video card from the last few years experiences), it's those damnably annoying switch-pulling, platform-jumping, button-pushing crap in the right order that mars an otherwise enjoyable action RPG.   Not all quests have them but many of the more important ones do.

I don't want to have to look up some walkthrough and alt-tab back and forth regularly, damn youz!  :-\  I want the hack and the slash and the shiny loot and skills to mix & match.  :-[

Kerbal Space Program...I finally made it to the Mun!!! After doing a few orbits, I'm going to try to make it back to Kerbin. My vessel really was not designed to land on the surface.  That's my goal for my next design.

This game is really amazing.

You have great taste. I love Amalur. Crappy story but great gameplay. I plan to try the new DLC for Warlock and  Dungeons of Dredmor.

I am hoping to finish my Empire Total War Ottoman campaign. There is actually a chance I could win if the full army I have marching into Eastern Europe can survive and conquer five regions between Venetia and Transylvania. Fingers crossed.

After that I may try a Napoleon Total War campaign (with Darthmod) as the Greeks.

But I am really jonesing for some RPGing...it's been a while. Either Witcher 2 or maybe continue my campaign in  Diablo III. If I can't hold out, then Dawnguard.

Pocket Planes: I started playing last weekend. Have a modest little fleet of 10 planes, covering about 10 cities. Its the first game that been able to break me away from Skyrim.

Skyrim: Finished the Legion quest line last weekend. Working on the main quest now since I've never finished it. Think I'm going to start a new character when I eventually get the Dawnguard DLC.

Diablo 3: More inferno item grinding

I'm sort of all over the place right now.

I just got IL-2 with the Ultimate Patch 3 mod installed properly, so I plan to play some of that.

I also recently reinstalled War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition and got my old saves loaded up, so I'll be doing some of that, too.

Beyond that, it's really anyone's guess.  Oh, I do plan to pick up Dawnguard and torture Gus with some screenshots at some point.  LOL.

Hey Farmer.. I now have two of the new 'Wizard Keys' from the latest Dredmor expansion.  Both found on level 1 so you can probably find a couple pieces of nice loot for your new victi.. ... err.. character.  Can only use each one once, but you'll find them fairly regularly.  Gotta find the Pocket Dimension tool on the dungeon floor (it keeps respawning if you miss it) and use that to go to your pocket dimension - there's a gate inside with a thing to enter the code into it.

Chrtwenggorzar
Inporrhogorjal

Remember.. if the gate glows red, then you've entered the code wrong so don't go in or you'll be in "Diggle Hell" which is pretty punishing from what I understand.  :)

I did.  :)  However the first few are the exact same as CMBN, so I just moved on to some of the battle pieces.  The improvements to the UI are pretty slick.  I do have to admit.

Thanks, Toonces. I can see from the product page on Steam that there are some significant upgrades - it looks like a kind of flying has been introduced, along with new faces and stuff. My question is whether there has really be $20 worth of content added, and if so, in what way?

Yes, it seems the price tag of $20 really has a lot of people chuffed.  I have to be honest, I'm not completely understanding the uproar.  Sure, on the face of it $20 might seem a lot for DLC.  Yet, I think it seems high mostly because games have gotten so cheap to pick up on sales and such.  Seriously, $20 for another 10+ hours of gameplay and several new features seems very reasonable in my opinion.

At any rate, any analysis I make of the cost/benefit is going to be skewed.  Even before I see it I'm already of the opinion that it is worth it.

I'm not afraid of $20 DLC - I've paid $20 for an expansion pack, and so long as the the value is there, I don't care what it's called.

I'm unlikely to buy this - having played the heck out of Skyrim, I'm pretty well done with it. Not terribly interested in going back there. But that's just me. When I'm done with a game, I'm done.

Wow!  Very cool.

I did as planned in DCCB: redeployed the Soviet 6th Army, did a fighting withdrawal from the Kerch Peninsula, sank an Italian S-Boat off Roumania, bombarded the stuffing out of the Luftwaffe around the Sea of Azov, broke through north of Kharkov, destroyed most of the 23rd PZ up there as well as 2 Hungarian Divisions and Two German divisions.  Of course, since it is May 1942, STAVKA isn't firing on all cylinders so I might not even take Kharkov before the Germans punch a hole somewhere and I have to go defensive.  Right now STAVKA rates the battle as rather a low-prestige level 7 offensive and I was lucky to get 100 extra fighters out of them before my Political Points went so low that I can barely replace bad Army Commanders with mediocre Army Commanders.

Meanwhile, Fontenoy turned up and I'll post about that in the Wargames section

Almost finished with Mass Effect.  I also had an itch for some CiV on my computer.  Something I haven't done in a long time.  Played the mod called R.E.D. WW2 Europe edition.  I highly recommend this mod for those of you who enjoyed the HOI series as a lot of the features of that game have been implemented in turn based form in CiV.
