Five signs of real gaming addiction...
...or how not to die like some South Korean gamers.

4. Withdrawal. Some Internet and gaming addicts become irritable or anxious when they disconnect, or when they are forced to do so.
5. Cravings. Some Internet and gaming addicts experience cravings, or the need to play the game or be online when they are away from the digital world.

Perhaps we can agree to avoid the offensive stereotypes in the understanding they don't accomplish anything? FWIW the gaming addiction stories I'm most familiar with come out of China, but there are stories out of Netherlands, USA and Canada that have reached international audiences.

I could name another one - buying Train Simulator 2012 - I reckon you have to be a hardcore gamer looking for a "new fix" to buy that game!! :-)

7. Whenever you sit down at any computer your hands instinctively go to your FPS key mapping positions (A, W, D, your pinky on shift and thumb on the space bar.) :)
I find myself watching a WWII movie and my fingers are trying to move the mouse to change the camera angle or hit the pause button. Do I have a problem? No? How about when the movie's over and I stand-up and yell at the screen, " I'm gonna re-load and beat you bastards next time"! This is especially embarrasing at the theatre.

CNN has been all over that question. I'm not sure there's a good answer. One article I read said something like at least 8% of the country had a gaming addiction.
A quick search on my part yielded about 6 - 8% of Americans are alcoholics. If we assume that there is such a thing as an addictive personality and if we assume (perhaps false on my part) that that personality is constant across the globe, then it could be that South Koreans are simply substituting games for alcohol.
Or not. It's just a theory.
If there is video game addition, where is the 12 step program to "cure" this modern affliction?
Also when do the geek chicks with glasses appear for instruction in the unofficial "13th step"?

Patrick said it's also dangerous for gamers to stay awake for long periods of time without rest – the body will eventually shut itself down and you will pass out.
Rawlins said her son learned his lesson, and he's accepted the consequences: "The Xbox is gone," she said.

Isn't it a bit late to start parenting and taking away the kids xbox? Good thing it wasn't fatal or the mom wouldn't get a second chance.
You know as much as we all joke or fantasize about marathon gaming sessions I don't think even I could stay locked up for that long in a gaming session. It never occurred to me that one could die from dehydration like that. A good lesson for all of us, especially for those who have children.
