Title: When the FRIDAY breaks
Post by: MetalDog on October 25, 2019, 05:45:15 AM

Hoping to get another player for our Field of Glory:Empires mp PBEM.  Hoping to go 4-0 in fantasy football.  And looking to the Nats to finish the sweep in Washington.  That'd make my weekend!

Thanks to last weekend's free trial of The Division 2 I managed to get all of my gaming group hooked.  We aren't having a games night this weekend but I will be playing it myself.  It's baffling that some issues still remain after the, what, six months since release?  But on the other hand it was already an awesome game and there appear to have been lots of excellent improvements with the recent episode 2 release, too.  It's also nice to be playing on the PC after having played the PS4 version at launch.

Also Arcen Games finally released 1.0 of AI War 2 which I will be sure to play the shit out of this weekend.  It feels good to be poking the sleeping AI giant again!

On a whim I just bought Disciples 3: Reincarnation in the current Kalypso sale on Steam.  I absolutely adored its predecessor, and like everyone else was disappointed with the third title in the series.  But by many accounts the Reincarnation update fixes and changes a shitload of things, and for roughly £2 I thought I'd give it another look.

There's a free weekend for an MMORPG called Citadel: Forged With Fire.  I doubt I'll have enough time to properly evaluate it but I'm downloading it anyway.

Finally, whenever I have a spare half an hour I play another level of the sublime GemCraft - Chasing Shadows, one of the best tower defense games I've ever played.

Modern Warfare and maybe some Mius Front.

Carpet is in downstairs and just waiting for paint now. So close to being finished it's painful. Haven't touched a flight stick in seven weeks...can't wait to set my gear up.  :'(

Specifically, Martok had to bail for health reasons  :'( (hope he gets better!).

So Speedy, playing the Alans in the Caucasuses, doesn't have a human teammate right now.

We're trying to figure out some options, but the easiest would be for someone to join his team (and we'll do an early restart)! Here's the map of the region: http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=23872.msg654889#msg654889

Meanwhile, aside from various mp gaming:

probably some continuation of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor;

perhaps also some Saboteur (I'm finally finishing out Forczyk's Case Red and would like the occupied-Paris vibe);

maybe some practice getting into new planes for IL-2 Great Battles or BoX or whatever the surname is now;

a good chance that I'll be plugging along on a mystery new print/screenie narrative AAR, for which I only lack snapping a bunch of screenshots and prepping their code (but I lack a lot of that);

...annnnnd maybe doing some more footage for a second AAR episode of Sang-Froid!

The move is over, but the unboxing-of-things continues apace (funny how much crap you can collect living two decades in one place) so to keep the Mrs. from knifing me, I'm going to be stupid busy "hanging things," this weekend.  Ugh.  So, so tired...

Stay safe folks and play a game or two for me.

Thanking the gaming gods I have retried Witcher 2 and broke my gaming rut. Will also dabble with Endless Legend but I've pretty much concluded I am not smart enough to either play or win an Endless game. Will also be girding the old loins for the upcoming Halloween sales.

  Good plan!  I too will probably be playing some Mius Front (maybe the Cubans in Angola?) as well as the usual DCS, World of Warships and maybe some Dreadnought.

I did okay with Witcher 2 (on the old PC) I might have to replay it.  I am too girding for the Halloween sales too.

I have off as of now until Sunday...back to doing ads  :uglystupid2: but as a consolation I get Wednesdays off.

will update as usual on the gaming this weekend.

Computer:  Still pondering it.  Close to pulling the trigger on another John Tiller title (possibly The Seven Years War).

Board:  Phantom Leader Deluxe (DVG).  (Pre-ordered it in 2012.  Sat on the shelf unopened since 2013.  Finally got it on the table and am loving it).

Great tune. One of first that really turned me on to Zepplin.

PC wise not sure, may try to get back into CKII or EU4. Also Mius Front and maybe one of the Grigsby games.

Gonna try to play some PS 4 as I've been neglecting that of late, maybe some NHL or FIFA

Board gaming going to play Hadara and Wingspan with the girls

Learning the new F-16 on DCS. Kinda stripped down due to early access but man....what a blast to fly. And the CBU-97 sensor fuzed cluster bomb. Watching 4 year through an armored column of 2 dozen vehicles is worth the price. Definitely can tell the difference between the F-18s upgraded radar and the F-16's. No wonder they are trying to upgrade to a AESA. DCS does a great job modeling them

True story. About a hundred of us showed-up for Jury Duty this am. One lady was coughing non-stop. Finally the clerk came over, spoke to her briefly, then she got and left the room. Immediately everyone in the whole room began to cough uncontrollably.  :2funny: I'm confident I will get excused after they take note of 2 of my family members being members of Law Enforcement.

Still plan to continue my Campaign in Stellaris (mid-game is really getting boring), Master of Orion CtS with the Sakkras, make a couple of épisodes of my let's play on YouTube of Horizon and maybe launch a new game of Interstellar Space Genesis (new patch released).

Others games i have running in the background:

- Stronghold 2 Campaign
- Stars in Shadows
- Napoleon Total War
- Pax Nova (should really start to play that one).

I really could be playing full-time!  :crazy2:

Under relatively new laws in the UK even police officers and judges can now sit on juries.

In 2014 whilst still serving in Devon and Cornwall Police I got called up for jury service in Plymouth. Turns out it was a murder trial involving two brothers from Plymouth.

I was selected for the jury and I didn't know the case or the officers or witnesses involved so was looking forward to a few weeks off work being paid to see things from "the other side" of the criminal justice system whilst on full pay. Sadly a police officer who was sat at the back of the court passed a note to the judge saying he recognised me as a Police Officer and the judge got cold feet over the cost implications of a retrial if the defence tried to make it an issue (despite it being totally legit) and I had to step down  >:(

To be fair the judge was very apologetic !

Everybody hates Jury Duty, especially if you have to take off work. But it is a Civic Duty and if I were ever to be on trial, I would want to be judged by a willingly participating jury of my peers, not some stiffs that don't have anything else to do or make some kind of statement. It is a pain though.

Playing the user-made campaign for CMRT: The Road to Minsk-- a huge fight.  O0

Sir Slash, I agree with you.  I wouldn't mind sitting on a jury at all.  I take justice seriously, so if I found a way to shirk jury duty I'd be afraid that some idiot would take my place.

Plus I'd be delighted for an excuse not to do my job for a few days!

 Careful for what you wish for. I've sat on 4 different juries over the years and the criminal ones were okay but having to decide to remove parental rights from a couple is a bit heart wrenching.

I'm playing my first tabletop wargame in at least 25 years - Pacific Tide.

It has been a bloodbath.  The system has a 50% kill rate on die rolls and sometimes you are rolling 8-10 die.  In a massive battle of aircraft launched from Midway (3 carriers & two land based US aircraft) against Truk (5 carriers) there were 7 carriers sunk, loss of all 7 air groups, and both land based squadrons at Midway destroyed.

At the start of 1943 the Japs have 2 carriers (one without aircraft) and the USA has 2 carriers with aircraft.  Japan has control of everything North of New Guinea (which is unoccupied) and the USA has Midway, Aleutians,  Solomons, and Marshall Islands.  Every amphib operation Japan tried worked - but the allies kept rolling 4-6 and whacking the invaders and Japan is short of troops with most way out of position.

The way the map is setup, you pretty much have stage troops through the Marshalls, Solomons, or New Guinea to cut off the Japanese oil supplies from Sumatra and Borneo.  Wake has a one unit infantry limit and Midway has a two unit limit.

Lots of fun and a very high naval and amphibious casualty rate - which is pretty similar to what happened in 1941-1942.

First time playthrough and completed it in about 8 hours.  Can probably play a second time in 3-4 hours.

An amazingly stupid oversight and blind luck gave Japan the victory.  I thought I had to take Okinawa, but instead I had to take everything else except Okinawa to win.  Japan ended up with one damaged fleet in Singapore - which prevented an amphibious landing which gave Japan the victory.  The allies could have easily won except they lost sight of what actually gives victory in the game.

Really nice design.  There are enough random elements that there should be pretty good replayability.  Amazingly deadly.  Only two amphibious landings by either side were done without taking casualties.  Even when the defender had one or two die they often rolled hits with both leading to bloody advances with the winner taking the island chain with one whole infantry unit.

Nah...it was more of a f-16 instead of. The F-14 is hard to learn and to fly I think.
And Iron Eagle requires a strong dose of whatever you have that keeps the stuff in your stomach from coming up. Never has there been a less realistic movie. Star Wars is closer to reality. But hey, the F-16 (except it's endless magazine of weapons) is a star

I anticipated the Tomcat like you couldn't believe. Some of the pre-release trailers showing it in flight actually made me tear up it was so God damn beautiful and having the chance to fly it like this was a childhood dream come true, but to be totally honest, the Hornet spoiled it for me. I found the F-14 to be extremely difficult to learn and fly coming from an advanced digital and fly-by-wire system. I just couldn't get comfortable going back decades in technology.

Still, many people swear by it and it is a must have module. Eventually, I will learn it...

This revised buyer guide for the F-14 by the Grim Reapers was released this weekend and just in time to stop me from getting it.  It reflects your point of view : the F-14B gets a 4 out of 5 score for difficulty.
I must resist until the next sale when this beauty will be included.

True but I don't have a prescription.... yet. In retrospect, getting dismissed might have had something to do with wearing slippers and a bathrobe to court. And then falling asleep on the Defense Table. But I didn't drool so who knows? The Assistant Prosecutor was kind of hot and I started to give her, 'The Tongue' but I didn't want to get her all flustered on the job so I just blew her a kiss instead.  :-*

That other last page is a lot less thrilling than I hoped it would be.

Speaking of depression, I got called for Jury Duty today.  :pullhair:  The trail begins 9am Monday.  >:( >:( Boy, is that guy getting fried.  :buck2:  Until then, Combat Mission Red Thunder to put me in the mood. Have a great last weekend of October Grogs.

If you want to get out of it an shirk your civic duty, just tell them you cannot be "fair and impartial"...

Or go to law school and become a prosecutor.  You'll never sit in a jury box again.... :)

The judge told us he envied us because he could never sit on a jury. No one cried for him.  :coolsmiley:

I actually agree with the judge.  As a former trial attorney, I would have liked to have had the experience of being on a jury.  Mostly out of curiosity, but I think it would have made me a better trial attorney.  Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely I will every get the chance, because of my work background.

Yeah it was a bit disappointing.  Much like my first sexual encounter with Gus.

Right. Don't give them the 'Freak' until after they put the ring on your finger.  <:-)

I remember those days.

Now I am quickly approaching the days when I am becoming the freak and it doesn't mean what it used to mean.

^Case in point, I passed on a few beers at dinner last night at home because the family is going out to dinner tonight, where I'll have 1 or 2. But when I woke up this morning I still felt like I drank! Not fair.

I've reached the point where a hangover will sometimes stretch into a second day.  That sucks.

I've limited my beer consumption to one pint max in a four hour period.  My diabetes cannot handle more than that without potentially running into problems.
Fortunately, there is Scotch.

I got the Diabetes curse too. I drink mostly mixed drinks so my struggle was finding something to mix that didn't have a lot of sugar or carbs, and I could stand to drink. Sprite or 7-UP is not too bad but there are some flavored waters that have zero sugar and aren't too bad especially with Rum. My biggest foe, and ultimate sacrifice, was milk. I've gone totally to Cashew Milk and rarely drink that. Almond milk I couldn't stomach. I would kill my best friend for a bowl of Frosted Flakes with ice cold milk.   :smitten:
