In the confines of the Straight of Hormuz, a Navy destroyer has collided with a big oil tanker.
Damage seems to be minor. Not much else in the way of details in this report:

Nearly happens all the time. Merchant ships can be so tiresome.
Once, 1977 I think, the Farragut was making a port visit to Split, Yugoslavia. They have a pretty straight channel between some islets leading into the harbor.
We were the first USN ship in for a long time, and weren't very confident in the charts.
Sticking like glue to the center of the channel worked until a little coastal steamer turned into our course and dropped the anchor! Right in the middle of the shipping channel.
Everyone just about had a heart attack, and the naviguesser, Rich, recommended going to port to get around the anchoring ship, because the charts showed some deeper water.
Well, it worked, and we got around the maggot without scraping our sonar domes.
While everyone was considering how to get off the bridge to change our scivvy shorts, Captain Boorda remarked, "Well, at least we know the charts are accurate."
I think Commander Grunwald, the XO, would have thrown anyone else who said that over the side.
Besilarius, it that the same Boorda who made it to CNO? I made a thoughtless comment about him in a different thread that I regret now. My sincere condolences.
Yeah, best ship captain ever served with.
My dad was on Yorktown during the war and he felt that Boorda reminded him a lot of Gerry Bogan or Fred Sherman, who both commanded carrier task forces.
As to the comment, don't worry. No one could clean up Tail Hook unmolested.

looking at those photos again Im wondering how long shes been out on deployment.
thats a whole lotta rust. theres even rust on the radar array.

Doesn't look all that deep though and I'm not sure there was damage to any critical systems. Based on the pics, I'm not sure the damage equals 10% of the overall cost of the ship. My initial thought was $40-$50 mil. I'm not an expert by any means.

I was a little surprised by the rust on the radar array too.
to my eye that hit is dead center between the radar and the forward vls cells. my bet is that more money gets spent fixing the radar array then the hull damage. Im also basing my cost on more then the basic physical repair. theres the repair to all systems and then 6 months of re-qualifying the the ship as combat capable. honestly, Im surprised no one was hurt.

and here is my real issue with this. the USN has pretty much given up on the frigate idea. with the crap that could or does go down in an area like the Hormuz we need OHP frigates datalinked to platforms like the Burke or Tico. the cost would be a fraction and not require the price tag of a LCS. theres a point where bigger isnt better and the OHP has already proven its ability to survive massive damage.
I just rechecked some visuals and that hit is maybe 20 feet behind the forward VLS cells.
its deep and wide (no jokes). at least 1/3 of that ships combat ability just got screwed.
120 million is now my low end estimate.

There have been quite a few members of the Porter family who served in the USN.
A personal favorite is William D. Porter, the son of the Civl War admiral.
I don't know why a destroyer was named for him, maybe they ran out of names. As far as I have heard he did nothing special, and was never hurt on duty.

Dirty Bill was consistent, if nothing else.
