...and the gov't is cutting defense spending?

It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.
...that we know of.

...thats one thing the article didn't really explain. How did they find out the sub had been there?
Quote
its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region
Who confimed it? Russia or the US?
Interesting article and a bit disturbing. Besides the weapons they could fire at the US think of all the damage they could cause to the oil drilling rigs in the Gulf and really put a hurt on the economy.
Interesting, but I'd like to see other confirmation of this. It's quite possible that Akula had a US sub shadowing it the whole time.
Reminds me of a story that I heard from some RCN officers. They were visiting a Russian naval base around Murmansk, a few years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. They were in an Officer's Mess about to have lunch, exchanging pleasantries and information about where they were from. One of the RCN officers stated that he worked at Stadacona. One of the Russians said "Ah yes, Stadacona! Wait, you will enjoy this." He got up, went to a bookshelf and took out a VCR tape, then walked over to a TV, turned it on and fired-up the VCR. The tape was some video shot out of a periscope, entering Halifax harbour and then zooming-in on buildings inside the Stadacona base, all in broad daylight. The Russians just looked at them, all smiles, no doubt relishing the expressions on the RCN officers faces.

Yikes! That anti-submarine boom should never have been removed after WW2.
Putin's harassing the Brits as well...perhaps the beginning of Cold War 2.0 :-\

Sorta like WW II where the RCN sunk a German sub of the coast of Atlantic Canada and some of the German sailors still had ticket stubs from a movie theatre in Pictou Nova Scotia in their pockets.

I heard that it was from the old Capitol movie theater on Gottingen Street.

Gotta justify defence spending somehow.
There's plenty of waste in the DoD but cuts need to be done with brains.
Great story Migs, I've never heard that.
Reminds me a lot of the yarn Wolfowitz and his cronies pulled back in the 1970s when they headed the Committee on the Present Danger B Team and basically lied to the Senate Intelligence guys about a Soviet submarine that was soooo sneaky that the CIA couldn't find it (Clancy based his Red October book off this idea). They were pretty much just frontmen for the defense industry trying to gin up business.

Eisenhower is highly underrated as a President.

No - that was the other German sub - they had to split up the wolf packs due to theatre seating restrictions ;)
The Pentagon has disputed the Akula report

An Akula carrying long range ballistic missiles....must be a reference to cruise missiles :o
The press is always screwing that sort of stuff up. ::)

Actually, I'd think the Pentagon would play along with it to show that they need more funds for ASW.
why worry about nuclear subs when the national economy could be cratered by computer attack
or socially by satanic beasts scanning children's palms to be their minions
way cheaper

Don't forget about shutting down the coal industry!
Free Beacon doesn't appear to be so free.
A friend who keeps his ear to the ground says that they receive support from Northrup Grumman and General Dynamics.
Looks like a shill for the defense contractors to whip up a need for more Virginias.

If you're right then consider that given the upcoming automatic budget cuts this is probably an opening salvo.
Everyone is running scared now that the War on Terror gravy train is grinding to a halt.
I lost no sleep over this story.
That is all.

Yes, but you have the big surf board, those gnarly biceps, and a Nerf gun. What about the rest of us?

ooohhhhhhhhhhhhh thats a good'un, how come you thought of it... damn you get all the good ideas
Well...look who just woke up.
Good morning, Sunshine!
Pretty good article on the supposed Akula incident
http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htsub/articles/20120817.aspx
They break down the numbers on the current US and Russian attack sub fleets - 14 total Russian SSNs vs 50-plus US SSNs. Only 8 of the Russian SSNs are Akulas which are the only type in service that come close to matching our subs in capability. And the Russian subs spend a lot less time at sea than ours.

How can I not participate in such a classic thread derailment such as this one?
good article Mirth. I didnt realize that the Russian sub force was that low.
I was surprised too. I guess they have 18 diesel boats (all Kilos) in service too, in various states of readiness. Still the cupboard is pretty bare.
Im fine with that. it leaves more boats for us to use in the Pacific and Indian oceans.
Yeah, I don't think we have to worry about a new Battle of the Atlantic any time soon.
