Title: Stronghold Warlords
Post by: Jarhead0331 on March 09, 2021, 12:00:40 PM
This releases in about an hour. Anyone getting it?

Overall favorable review, but some initial concerns -

I've always been a bit attracted to the Stronghold series, but that RTS aspect makes me sad.  :(

I am definitely getting it.

Bought it on GOG. Will play the tutorial tonight...

^Post impressions! Steam reviews right now are 'mixed' for whatever that is worth.

Played a little longer than expected. Tutorial and the first two missions of the first campaign. Maps are fairly small but that's usual. They will increase. So far it's a classical stronghold game. I like the setting. I look forward to pursue the campaign. It's fun and i like it. Very much what i expected. I think there are 5 campaigns with six scenarios each. I hope I'll manage to play multiplayer with my sun.

Can you pick and choose the campaign you want to play or are they locked until you progress a certain amount?

Post by: Anguille on March 10, 2021, 12:22:43 AM
You cannot choose the first campaign. I don't know yet if all the remaining campaigns unlock once i finish the first one (which is still a form of tutorial). I've seen an economic campaign (i think China).

I will try to play one scenario per day.

Ah, so there is a bit of a lock before finishing the first tutorial/campaign...I can deal with that. I like to ease in anyway.

I heard, at least in skirmish, that all sides use the same units. So, for example, Mongols can train samurai, etc. I also heard that all units speak Chinese. These seem like real immersion breakers to me if true.

I haven't tried skirmish yet. For the languages, i don't. The only language i could recognise would be japanese but i am not that far yet.

I hope that's not true.

I must that this would surprise me because the game supports all the languages of the nations represented in the game.

I love the base building aspect of the Stronghold series (I was one of the few that liked Stronghold 3) but as soon as the fighting starts I start screaming at my monitor "I spent all day building that wall!!!"

This is why I'm glad Planet Zoo isn't an RTS.  ;D

I watched Agrippa play some of the game and it seemed like most all other RTS games. I know that there is a base builder there. He just played through the tutorial mission.

It seems indeed that buildings are the same for the different factions. Haven't played more but looked at some videos. The different nations have some specific units but many basic units are the same. I will continue the game and take it as it is. I have fun so far.

This looks like a miss to me.  I enjoyed Stronghold Crusader a lot, but since then the games seem to have been in a steady downward spiral.  The Steam page is absolutely flooded with reviews complaining about how simplistic the game is and how it loses its appeal after a few hours.  Also, if the discussion in comments for reviews are to be believed, the devs are banning a number of people who left negative reviews.

Seems like the game was tailored with multiplayer in mind and therefore gravitates more towards traditional RTS than castle building simulator, which is a pretty big shame.  Maybe for $15 or $20 it could be fun for a few hours.

^Yeah I saw the same thing in the Steam reviews about the bannings.

Yeah. The game is ok but the price is too high for what it is right now. I hope they keep working on it. 20 to 30$ would be ok but not more. I have to say that I don't regret my purchase even though i would have like it to be a little cheaper.

Anguille you are one of the more forgiving people here so for you to even hint at being a little dissatisfied definitely gets my attention, more so than 1000 mixed Steam reviews.

Removing this from my wishlist for now :/

I will have a clearer opinion once i have completed two more campaigns. But there's a vibe that i haven't felt for a very long time...when i used to be excited about these new rts 20 years ago...and i am genuiely looking forward to continue my campaign. Maybe they should have stuck with just one nation.

For now, I have Total War Three Kingdoms to dive into. That should keep me going at least until Warlords is sorted out.

Perhaps it should not suddenly work on your newer one as well.

That gives me the idea for a great program to sell to parents.  Install on you computer and select which games have requent problems loading/running and/or have mouse/controller problems.

Just completed the first campaign. This unlocks the next two chinese campaigns. A war campaign and the economical campaign. I had to do the 5th mission 3 times... L:-)

About the languages, it seems specific units speak the corresponding language (japanese, vietnamese etc.). However, as the vietnamese have only 2 basic units, they also used two advanced chinese units in the campaign. I've heard that units in the japanese campaign speak japanese.

Enjoying this game. It's a little gem but definitely not a AAA title. A good AOEIV break. The challenge lies in the interface and the economy more than anything else.
I have been enjoying it but can see myself getting bored after mastering the economy. Siege engines are a pain in the butt to manage because the larger ones require fire orders. If you can get it cheap it will definitely give you some consternation while you find the buttons you need. I have only just found the in game encyclopdia. Could have used that 5hrs ago :)

For anyone who's got the game recentely, there's a special Halloween map/scenario which is only available during this season. It's one map but it's fun. Check it out on the campaign map (below right).
