I see this is on sale at Amazon right now. I am thinking of picking it up but some of the reader reviews have given me pause. Anyone read it? Worth the $18 for the Kindle version?

I have this in my basket right now as well. How bad could it really be? Even crappy pizza is still pizza.
You've obviously never had Korean pizza (cabbage and carrot slices) or Japanese pizza (mayonnaise and sweet corn).
^WTF? I typed 'pizza' not 'wet Asian garbage.'
Look on it and despair!

^That...THAT...is not pizza.
^ That is gross looking is what that is.
^I think I threw up a little in my mouth. :(

You, sir, have the benefit of living in the pizza capital of the world. Take it from someone who has had to eat chain pizza and awful mom & pop stuff for the last twenty plus years, crappy pizza IS crappy pizza.
We can make a deal and I can export some NYC tap water down to you. It's the water that makes NYC pizza and bagels the wonders of humanity that they are. I will never eat chain pizza btw. Ever. But I would think the Mom & pop stuff has got to be decent. No?
Take this for what it is, gas station pizza here is considered not only edible but good. 'nuff said.
Pizza at gas stations? That sounds wonderful. Seriously. We don't have that here.
I'll second what MetalDog said about gas station pizza. There are a couple of gas stations in my area that actually have halfway decent pizza if you're on your work lunch break. The only chain pizza I eat is Papa Gino's which is also not too bad. The best pizza I ever had however is Hi Fi Pizza in Cambridge, MA. A small mom and pop shop he still makes his pizza the same way after 25+ years in the business. They guy that works behind the counter is still the same guy for the past 16 years as well. :)

Unfortunately, this is not the case.
Like
'phro, I too have had crappy pizza. You might think it's impossible for it to be bad, but trust me...it's possible.

Oh, the humanity!! :o
The story we were told as kids was that pizza was invented (sort of) in Sicily. But it was developed by Greek immigrants in NYC.
When my dad first went to Naples, they tried the pizza, and it was horrible. Bread as thick as your wrist, and the house special was stewed tomatoes on top, with a little drizzle of cheese.
He had enjoyed the pizza in NYC a lot (there was a little spot near the Brooklyn Navy Yard that had great pizza.) and figured it would be tops in Italy.
Supposedly, it was some Greeks who tried pizza and decided they could improve on it.
Man, I really hope some poor, unsuspecting SOB does a Google search for that Legions of Rome book and gets directed here to the horrors of Japanese seaweed pizza, gas station take out, and NYC tap water.
^Did you buy the book?
I can vouch for Bes' story on Greeks improving pizza in NYC. My parents went to Rome circa 1970 and ordered pizza and were horribly disappointed when it came served with a raw egg on top.
I would think that Neapolitan pizza would be a little better than Roman but I guess not!
Nope. Got it reserved at the library. It should be back in next Wednesday. If I like it, I'll buy it.
Please report back.
Wait...what? I have to do a book report now? Man......
^ with pictures! Crayon is OK as long as you use at least 8 colors including one of the 'metallics' for the Roman armor. :D

We've been known to derail a thread or two ;-)
Bastards! So the festering vaginal fart who had the book out of the library before me "returned" it in the overnight slot and, according to the super hot Filipina librarian, it was covered in some sort of red goop and mold. No word on just what the goop was. I blame Gus and his pizza awareness initiative.
I blame Belial and his uberness.

Uber Ol' Nick? I'm sure Shaitan could come up with something better than Honeymoon Lube (Cherry) and Roquefort Slime to corrupt a disapproved-of tome.
I think I am going to buy this today.
My library has a copy they'll let go cheap.

When it comes to innuendo, I've come to the conclusion you purposely pitch it right over the plate. It's the only explanation...

He has no shame. He has his dog's balls on his mantle for cryin' out loud.
^Like you guys just met me or something.
Just bought it. And a companion volume on the Byzantine wars against the Muslims leading up to Manzikert (1071 AD) to read while trying out Crusader Kings II. It's going to be a pleasant wargaming autumn. Cleansing my gaming palette now with RPGs to be ready for the heavier stuff.
And no goo.
Book arrived today. It is big and heavy and smells awesome.
Is that because of the free goo?

Please let us know if it's any good. I'm always down for some decent historical non-fiction.
I will...haven't had time to even crack it open yet.
And it is goo-free.
So far...
