WARGAME 4 all but announced. Their is a tease up on the latest SD2 blog that has A10s and Abrams sillouettes. :(
Gotta say I am bummed. The market is flooded with at least two other games already in development in the same genre, Broken Arrow and Regiments. Then you have armored brigade which is basically the same thing.
Will Eugen continue to develop Steel Division games? To me the problem with modern systems in game is that their is very little depth to stories because their is no history to get into and read about in the background. Their is also a lot of guesswork and very little concrete information on the weapons systems to be had. I mean a lot of it is classified or just hard to quantify as well as never having faced the other weapons systems, so we really have no idea how they would perform. Which results in an almost sci-fi style game with units and history that could be considered to be made up. No real life experience to draw upon.
Therefore I am hoping that Eugen have expanded and can handle more than one project at once. I very much doubt it though. I am now resigning myself to the fact that one of my favourite games ever is about to take a population dive that may kill it off.

NEWS: Steel Balalaika the Broken Arrow dev is almost entirely made up of ex Eugen staff from the strike..... world explodes!! So essentially we have a giant fight for whether the split company will survive.
From the forums by a standard forum user if it is true:
"Yes. He left the studio after the strike of some years ago. Steel Balalaika (BA's dev) is almost entirely composed by ex Eugen staff + some russian guys. This is why the game look so close to a WG: it's basically an unofficial WG."
I wonder if the game that really looked very similar to Red Dragon a while back that got banned has anything to do with this??
Eugen might need ww2 time period guys more than ever then. If they are going to be competing with a company that will take some of their sales. Hopefully more Steel Division theatres are forthcoming. But this does explain why SD2 has been in afterburner mode for some years. Even though their have been a tonne of improvements. There has been nothing too major. Maps were needed and no map modding tools or city maps that were kinda coming got released. The Eugen team would at my guess have been both understrength and missing some key members from the strike at the same time as gearing up to compete with the strikers upcoming competing game in their market space.

You're very pessimistic. I mean, are you suggesting that there are too many cold war/modern era wargames of this caliber and that instead, they should be working on a game set in World War 2? Because there just aren't enough wargames set on the Western or Eastern Front and we clearly need another. :idiot2:
A modern wargame is akin to "sci-fi" because there hasn't been a major conventional confrontation in the late 20th or early 21st century? That's just crazy talk, dude.
Eugen does work on multiple projects at once. They have worked on nation packs for Wargame Red Dragon and DLC for SD2 at the same time. I too would love for them to be working on multiple projects, and as much as I also love SD2, more WWII is not what we need.
Cold War Game was the other one I was thinking about.
Yes I am a bit bias when it comes to ww2 Eugen style games with the massive RTS zoom maps when we have 3 modern ones in development and historically another 3 from Eugen. We then have 2 ww2 games done by Eugen on different fronts with very specific time frames and a lot of theatres left to do.
Modern:
Wargame European Escalation
Wargame Air Land Battle
Wargame Red Dragon
Broken Arrow
Regiments
Armored Core
Wargame 4 (don't know what the name is yet)
Cold War game - attempted and shut down I think?
WW2
Steel Division 1 Normandy
Steel Division 2 Bagration
Don't get me wrong. I will probably buy and play wargame 4 or Broken Arrow. BUT I think ww2 is much easier to do in a game of this scale, modern requires a lot more range even than the eugen maps have at the high end of things to do really well.
I was actually hoping that Eugen were going to do a Napoleonic or Pike and Shot game. I just did not want another modern game in this specific RTS genre.
Which to me is a semi-realistic (but as realistic as possible) RTS game with a very large scale map that allows for some reasonable force sized strategy that is a little more like the force sizes actually used to attack. It's not the calibre it's the specific type of RTS that is now going to have two more modern games of which I have played at least three before. That's over double what the ww2 era has and more than any other era they could do.
Eugen worked on SD2 on the back burner I would say trickling out content while I would guess a huge portion of Eugens staff worked on the next cold war title. I would not say they are good at working on two things at once. It takes years for them to give a few new sides. SD2 still has a few things to come and I will continue to enjoy it.
As for modern wargames being akin to "sci-fi" that is obvious exagerration by me. But would you not agree that ww2 had many engagements testing most equipment extensively and that there is a massive amount of both first hand and reported and researched primary evidence for ww2? While a ficticious cold war or after engagement between at least two major powers thus testing all new weapons systems, doctrines etc and how things go down is largely unexplored? It is largely guesswork. It's fictional and it involves science... well maybe not so much science.
I am looking forward to seeing what Wargame 4 offers. To give modern warfare a good go I would say the maps need to be A LOT larger. Especially if they include ships again.
This teaser just came out on Eugen's channel. January 20th 2022 for early access
Certainly when there are multiple, similar games competing for a multiplayer market it can serve to divide the community. Frequently it seems that one rises to the top, and that can kill games that have an MP focus.
I'm thinking Hell Let Loose vs. Post Scriptum.
I love everything about that trailer. I may even go in on the early access. Did a search and can't find it on Steam to wishlist, though.
Yeah they have some technical issues with the steam page atm.
Vulcanhd managed to get to it though
Some of the tidbits in this article are great! Especially Army General dynamic campaign!

Steam page says:
This game is not yet available on Steam
Planned Release Date: 19 December
This game plans to unlock in approximately 20 hours
RELEASE DATE: 19 Dec, 2021
I think it's a mistake... surely a mistake?
Might unlock for purchase, but from all info available early access gameplay starts Jan 20, 2022.
Early Access? Is Eugen hurting for capital or something? That's an odd route for them to go.

I reckon they want to steal a march on Broken Arrow (ex Eugen staff (FLX) and Russians according to some) which has only just shown 10 minutes of in game footage.
Thus announcement, pre-order and early access as fast as possible I reckon.
Broken Arrow looks almost the same but may end up being a little fresher because it must be built from the ground up.
Detcord do you remember the Eugen workers strike a few years back?
This is FLX I think talking about instant blacklisting after leaving a workplace and the need for workers to unite;

The alpha footage of BA doesn't really look that great. I know its an alpha an all but the renders and GUI looked fairly bad.
Ref Video - As someone that works in this industry I can tell you that blacklisting does indeed occur. Though usually for very real reasons. Laziness, failure to meet ded's, leaving mid-proj, and many others. It also occurs, though far less often due to social-media backlash, because of employer abuse, whatever that might be. I'm not saying that they shouldn't be allowed to unionize. Just that the concept of it seems absurd to me.
Probably because I don't qualify being that I'm a contractor. :D
Yeah. I was just trying to illustrate that this is almost exciting because it seems like a real cold war spy switched sides :P
Thus with crucial tech in the enemies hands an arms race has started... thus the early access etc and the "push" this must have taken by Eugen to get ready.
It has to be a big blow to the Broken Arrow crew that they have the original developer making pretty much the same game in competition with them.
Broken Arrow even with the footage being a little lack lustre has potential. They certainly showed a lot more units like hovercraft and nukes in the trailer. So perhaps more fun and less realism? Like world in conflict?

Eugen, or whatever is left of them, decided upon this route due to what they perceive as valid and actual competition to their potentially sub-standard product. They see what these aforementioned titles could be and decided to plop down their game as fast as possible to hamper sales of competitive products. It's really the only reason to go this route.
Innovate or die.

Hello guys,
The date displayed by the Steam Store is wrong at the moment. We've sent a request to change it 9 hours ago and we're waiting for Valve reaction. Early Access comes on January 20, 2022 as announced in the trailer.
GrandStrateger [developer] 24 minutes ago
Tactically, the most important thing is the combined arms combat my friends! You will see in this new game how we have upgraded it and what are all the new possibilities.
On the strategic level, I hope we will amaze you with the new version of AG.
And I'm not talking about the new graphic engine, the new maps, the urban areas...

I'm certainly looking forward to it, but only if it enhances the Wargame formula in substantial ways. I'm not expecting revolutionary change, but certainly an evolution in the strategic layer of the game, UI OOB/TO&E, graphics, etc. If it is just a slightly updated Wargame EE or ALB, I'll be disappointed.
For what it is worth, I care nothing about the labor issues between developers and their employees. These are internal contractual concerns as far as I'm concerned. I just want to see good games developed, and whether they come from Eugen, a new company formed by its former employees, the muffin man or all three, matters not.
The series is still new to me so I've got high hopes.
Do you know the muffin man?
Another question answered:
Schtorsk [developer] 6 hours ago
The engine has the same basis since R.U.S.E. but it has been continuously upgraded by our dedicated team. There are many major changes between the SD2 version of the engine and the WARNO version. Those changes should be detailed in some future blogposts.

It's getting pretty hammered in reviews. I'm sure this will be good if they add all the stuff from steel division. I'd almost rather play regiments, cause it's free.
Yeah. Surprisingly, I'm holding off for now. Just sounds like there is not a lot there in this early build and there is a lot of work remaining. Does seem like they released early to get the jump on Regiments and Broken Arrow. Eugen has never done an EA release before as far as I know.

No brainer. Cold War.
^ +1.
+2, 3, 4, and 5 for emphasis. Cold War runs on a clunky old engine but it's a finished product and very enjoyable. I'd hold off on this unless you're REALLY hankering for a new Eugen title.
Thanks brehs.
I'm holding off on buying the EA version of WARNO, too. Right now I'm enjoying the free playtest of Regiments (Birds Eye Games / MircoProse) on Steam.
I got it and can confirm early access really is early access this time around. 4 maps and 2 divisions are all there is to play with. Lots of bugs and some crashes. Lots of features and things not there or undinished.
I think though that from what I have seen on the forums, people expected a finished game. I have seen a lot of posts like "game is not finished" or "why are there only 4 maps" etc
It is a shame when people bash things because they are ignorant or entitled. Having said that I still suspect this was rushed to bear the competition, which might be a good thing if the community can persuade the devs to make this one brilliant.
No campaign play yet. Devs have promised to slow gameplay down as well. Atm it has been estimated that an abrams travels at 200km an hour or more due to the cohesion buffs.
I pretty much got it the moment it came out btw as did another friend. We could play single but not multiplayer because the multi servers immediately crashed and were not up for an hour or two thereafter.
A lot of the new features like travel time for aircraft are really cool. But others like hiding the ammo types are a step back from sd2 but may change.
I have enjoyed what I have played so far. But I cannot see this game releasing for at least 6 months.
A review of an early access game is an oxymoron.
I'm actually kick'n myself for not getting Combat Mission Black Sea in the steam sale. Saw some good youtubes of the war in the Ukraine, plus with the current crisis and all, was kinda hankering for some black sea.
It crashes to desktop on me about 1 in 2 times I play it. But it's fun and new.

Epic, loin-moistening screen shots. Especially the Hind in action.
Agreed, that's pretty spectacular looking. I just don't have the reflexes for RTS's like that anymore, if I ever did.
I know I am one of the only ones here that plays that line between RTS and Wargame and beyond. I do so mainly to be able to enjoy myself with like minded friends and in order to manage time. RTS games that lean towards realism can be played in a reasonable time and are probably still 10x more realistic than most board games. It's a compromise I am willing to make as long as the game can suspend my disbelief enough and does not do outright silly things that I cannot explain away somehow.
I like all you guys though because you are wargamers and are mature and groggy. We are all getting older now, I think I was once one of the youngest community members back in the wargamer.com forum days. I am sure the community is shrinking as a lot of younger people gravitate towards pink ponies and anime kinda realism. Sucked down into the void of unreality.
I broke down and got it...the reviews seem to be balancing out and the more level-headed of them appeared to be on the positive side.
I like what I'm seeing, but...and it is a big BUT...it moves WAY too fast. Like ridiculously fast. I played a 2v2 on a fairly nice sized map and the battle was over in under 8 minutes. At regular time, the vehicles are like rocket ships. You can slow down time, but its too slow to play a full game at that speed. They definitely need to work on the rate of speed for vehicles. It has got to be toned down and balanced.
That said, the effects and sounds are really well done and it does seem like a mix of Wargame and Steel Division 2. For me, this is a positive sign.
That's good to hear about the ability to slow the game down, because you can't slow a game like this down enough for me.

You can slow it down or stop it altogether.
What I would like to have instead of buttons for pause, slow, normal, fast, etc. is a sliding bar so that you can go from freeze time to accelerated speed and anything in between with precision control.

Yeah, that is my struggle with this game and others. I just can't figure out how to play it where I feel like I am able to give out orders that matter and at the same time watch all the drama that is movie like play out. I usually get caught up watching something and neglect the other stuff going on. Just can't figure out a way that works for me.
That is why SD2 and WARNO automatically save all your games as replays to watch later.
I have a friend that I was surprised went after we finished playing and regularly just watched the whole hour of play over again as a replay. Studying every detail. He learnt a lot doing that.

Sure, but that is not really what I meant. Mentally at least for me it's difficult to try and give orders and watch enough to see if effective or require changes on one part of the battlefield, while things are going nuts in many other spots. Not saying the game is bad, just these types might not be for me which I already kind of knew. Envy those who figure it out and enjoy.

Yeah biggest issue for me - all way to fast and the Tac AI doesnt really make up for it. I was hoping this would be more like a RT wargame than a RTS - but I guess what this is mostly about is bringing the older games more in line with the current.
My bad, Mi8TV Hip.
The speed of the gameplay will send me into a tizzy as well, so I will be happy to see a slider implemented too.
Guys here seem to enjoying it more than the typical Steamer...which definitely makes me more comfortable jumping in.
This is slightly off-topic, but probably my favorite wargame system is the courier system in Scourge of War. I absolutely love playing that game as the commander giving written orders to my troops vs. clicking on them and using arrows or waypoints or whatever to get them to do what I want. Telling a unit to "move to this point and form up on the left of Jackson, facing west. Defend your position" is so much easier to convey what I want a unit to do than clicking on the map.
I'm not entirely sure how an order system like that could be implemented in a game like WARNO, but man, it sure would be cool if developers could build more games using the SoW system. For me at least. I can't imagine it'd be hugely popular with the youngsters.

You haven't played Grand Tactician: The Civil War, have you?
I'd agree with jarhead, you really have to check out grand tactician civil war. It's has all the elements of sow but with a really deep strategic layer. There's also over a dozen historical battles if you want to jump into to the battles with out the strategic layer.

Actually Eugen has commented on that just a few hours ago under a youtube video (little known scoop I guess!) about this rather common hypothesis - maybe they were frustrated by its popularity, considering it implies they're afraid of something, or whatever - but the point is that they deny the two games having anything to do with their EA a strategy.
Doesn't mean they didn't need the cash though of course :) That is another story (and a rather successful one so far - 1400 reviews in the first week is a solid performance).
But I am ready to believe that these are all disconnected. Regiments is really close to another genre (much closer, design-wise, than World in Conflict or even Ground Control actually - Eugen has a kind word for Soundwolf, the designer) and Broken Arrow is just in too early a state at that point to be released in an immediate future, from the little we could see in the reveal.
Admiral have you got a link to that review with the Eugen interview?
Nah it ain't no interview, just the game designer giving his opinion, and that's just a small friendly nod :)

@Stephan Hernandez Oh, ok, cool. I have a couple of questions, Why did Warno come into early access, with a $30 price tag even though it is unfished, and would the campaign be released during EA or after release? I like the general foundations and features laid in WARNO, and I appreciate the detail you and the other devs put into the game, but, referring back to my first question, going to EA ultimately hurt the game, and most of the community were dissatisfied. Although their expectations were high for EA, you have to understand that their expectations are the result of anticipation for another Wargame esque game for years and their high standards for Eugen to deliver it properly. Do not get deterred from criticism, but I hope that Eugen could eventually achieve their goals for Warno momentarily.

@Dark Memes We put game in early acess because we want to improve the games with all the player base. The price is for the full game, not just for the EA. And the content will be deliver during that time. Buying game in EA is just a way to help us improve the game and test it before other, and at the end, get the full game but with a discount. We understand that's not for everyone, and waiting 1 or 2 month to see if things will improve is a fair move. The feedbacks we already received are very important and fixed soon. It's a very efficient way to improve game with the community. Check our discord for more feedbacks from the community feelings about this strategy ?

@Drydock Dreams Games Merci ! Et oui, son boulot est assez hallucinant effectivement ! Chapeau."
I've played 12 battles of WARNO. In no particular order here are my thoughts. The game is surprisingly stable and bug-free. I had one in-game battle freeze. I enjoy the breakneck pace of it. Yes, it is ridiculously fast, but I enjoy that the fast jets are just that now...
The maps and detailed terrain is excellent. With the game balance to come, I'm sure we will have a worthy Red Dragon successor (minus the naval action hopefully) with the best bits of Steel Division incorporated.
Interestingly they have done away with the FOB supply bases, and one can place recon outside one's starting position. You can also 'sell back', send your transport off-map if you wish. The SD line of sight tool is now available. The damage models of units destroyed are more detailed.
ps always happy to play multiplayer my Steam nickname is Franatic ;D
Thanks fran - definitely still on my list to buy, but maybe not immediately.
Good to see the frequent updates, this week 2 new maps with the patch. The Devs are also trying out new things, couple of updates back they removed the need to have a cv in your starting areas to ensure a live spawn point. To counter cv sniping. I think it is a good thing, fast paced enough as it is.
The next content release contains the first East/West German battle groups. Hello Leopard 2 tank and Tornado IDS strike aircraft. The latter will feature its trademark MW-1 cluster dispenser.

I'm with Toonces on this one-The Scourge of war courier system is awesome. I think the US military has used it to teach JOs how to write clear, easily understandable orders. While I like GTTCW, the order system there is more abstracted, although it does incorporate the order delay.
Yeah, I'm having trouble jumping on the train on this one. Partly that's colored by some very hostile youtube reviews of the EA state, but mostly it's because I'm really enjoying the Regiments playtest and I'm leaning a lot more in that direction.
There are some core mechanics in this one that were in Red Dragon but I just cannot get my head around. One specifically being the tanks driving through forests as an AI thing. WARNO is proving very hard to sink my teeth into as well. I love steel division 2 so much more.
A few screenshots from warno which now has 14 divisions total (so far) and a campaign map similar to Steel Division 2's coming.
I find it far superior to Red Dragon but the internet crowd is funny. They prefer what they know and I think like many games they look set to stay with red dragon, primarily because they seem to expect that Eugen are giving them the same product with less content and DLC to come. I on the other hand cannot stand the Red Dragon interface and see a huge amount of improvement over Red Dragon in general.

Warno with army general will really fun.
I liked the Steel Division 2 campaign but it was tedious and also was a bit of a "setup" in terms of how you were pretty much pre-determined by the initial strategic deployment as to how you could play. Realistic but meant like the real thing tonnes of battles on the same terms. Defensive or Offensive. A real grind. The grind caused because you played every single battle (I don't not auto-resolve) instead of one big front all at once. I think it was the defensive sand bags and such and deploying them every time that made quick battles impossible. Making progress in the campaign was slow if you wanted to do it properly.
In WARNO we will see.

A new patch today that brought another two divisions to look at today. A British Territorial division and a French Paratrooper division. Both very cheaply kitted out. In steel division 2 we would call these B or C class divisions. They do have some interesting kit though. The French have 6 wheeled armoured cars with 90mm guns but no tanks. The British have a few older chieftains and some ring in m48s from the west germans.

The developers adjusted the (multiplayer) game speed recently, and it feels a lot better in-game.
Sure does feel better. A few sore points are still the los and the hitpoints for tanks (AP behaviour) but apart from that it's great fun and I think the balance is about right now.
WARNO is 25% off on Steam atm
OK Giant city building like they might be a thing.
Looks cool, did they say how it influences game play, an additional length of the line of sight perhaps?
Plus Destruction game mode is now part of Early Access.
They have not said how it will affects gameplay and I suspect that it will be the same as having a single story building for infantry.
As for destruction mode. I am really not a fan of that mode. It's for people that love to play ww1 style defensive lines while the AI zombie waves you.
But against humans it could be pretty amazing... trying to preserve your units. I imagine both sides would sit on their behinds though trying to wait out the enemy. Destruction mode still has points to hold as an incentive to attack?

The more sectors you control, the more points you gain to buy units...and lose them if not careful.

I think you are probably right.
What is the spec of your pc, graphic card...screenshots looks great!
I don't think you need a super PC to run this well. I have a mid range CPU and graphics card.
Some info on the campaign is out.

Been a while. Now without the Broken Arrow demo back to Warno. Have to say not really looking forward to Broken Arrow but glad it exists. It has some fun but very gamey aspects to it. WARNO on the other hand is my preference for a game that is multiplayer up to as many friends as I need while being believiable enough as a slightly fast forwarded RTS wargame that is realistic enough.
The new buildings on the map twin cities. Pretty good job really. Have not had a chance to see if I can bring them down with arty or bombs yet. But have seen the walls start to crumble. Line of site from these buildings is amazing.

THe new LOS tool. The blue part is an indication of how far I will see units with my chosen tool tip for enemy stealth rating. So the blue part basically shows me in this case that I will NOT see units with BAD stealth (chosen in the bottom right) in the blue areas APART from the white areas which show where I will see normal line of sight out to. If I chose exceptional the blue area would be significantly larger, indicating that exceptionally stealthy units will not be seen until they are a lot closer.

I believe it does have active pause?
That's right, the ability to pause and give orders. And the option to slow-motion the game speed.
I'd agree with des, warno is the better game. I'm looking forward to what they do with the campaign. Is it army general like SD2 ? Not sure I've seen what they have planned. Plus, there's tons of mods on the workshop, you can pretty much tweak warno to your liking.
One thing I was wanting in SD2 was the ability to edit or create your own army general campaign. It can be done by modders but not cleanly, it's a bunch of text editing changes. Be nice if it could be done with the game interface, but I think they keep it difficult so you have to buy their dlc for new army general content.
I think it's premature to conclude which one of these two is "the better game". Broken Arrow won't be out until probably late in the year. Warno, although early access, has been in development for longer and has had several substantial updates.
They are both subject to change throughout development, but I suspect Broken Arrow will play quite differently when we see it again.
The latest WARNO update with the new cities & other tweaks, ahead of bigger tweaks (reworked AA) and single player content bodes well for the future. I've seen a lot of contents creator go back to it and enjoy themselves over the past week. Eugen did well, kuddos to them. Hard work does pay in the end!
I agree Admiral. Great game. But to look at the steam forums you would not think that. People complain no matter what Eugen do. Not only that, people seem to complain simply to be toxic. It's like a bunch of chatgpt bots spamming all steam gaming forums constantly with ever more complex spoofing of human behaviour in chat. Most responses are just plain silly half the time.
As for Broken Arrow. I can see the direction that it has taken and will likely keep following. Unless something drastic changes I think WARNO is pretty safe for those who like more realism. Broken Arrow will be fun but like a light version of WARNO.
Anyone jumped into this recently? Worth picking up for the asking price?
Went ahead and picked this up and enjoying it a great lot. Big overall improvement over Wargame and Steel Division, though I'd personally prefer WWII. Definitely worth the asking price even without the promised campaign mode.

Yeah, I'd agree it's well worth the purchase and only going to get better when the campaigns are released.
I'm enjoying it over the previous vanilla Eugen games to be sure.
Not delving too deep till the campaign comes out, but I've enjoyed the operations.
A shortened test version of the campaign is out and I am enjoying it.
Still a little annoyed that the devs went with hitpoints instead of realism to reduce time to kill. But I can ignore that given everything else in game is nice to play with.

Warno gets a release date and a huge amount of dlc announced. May 23rd is release. Early access peeps get some free elc which is otherwise paid but also have to upgrade to the gold edition before release for all of the announced future content.
More countries have been announced including Canada and Poland, but no countries outside of what would have been in a European cold war gone hot.

What do you think? Are you going to upgrade to Gold? Hard to resist. The airborne/air assault nemesis DLC sounds great too.
Quote from: Jarhead0331 on May 03, 2024, 08:19:39 AMWhat do you think? Are you going to upgrade to Gold? Hard to resist. The airborne/air assault nemesis DLC sounds great too.
I will probably upgrade. It's a solid game already and now that there is a map making tool I am sure even Eugen will find it easier to release maps. Maps variety was always a problem for Steel Division 2. But the problem they had with SD2 and not wanting to import the SD1 normandy maps so that the game files size on disk did not become too big was still a problem. It's probably why the devs have already said this game is only about the same kind of area in Europe. Even though we will have map variety, we may not have texture variety. Not a major deal, but consider how many regions red dragon represented. It had desert and asiatic jungle/paddy field maps. I always thought the price tag for WARNO early access was well placed at half the AAA price for a game. Now if you want gold you will be paying AAA prices now WARNO has proved itself through early access.
Still don't like tank hitpoints though and ranges although close are still a little abstracted to balance things a bit. But overall it's pretty realistic and does a good job of suspending my disbelief.
I like warno too, I'll probably get the gold.
Des, if you're a stickler on realism, have tried the combat mission series ? They've got a Cold War module, and there definitely ain't no hit points on the armor.

Yep. I own about 5 combat mission titles. I just wish they had more multiplayer options. COOP would be perfect. As it is it's hard to play with friends with such a hard core game when they are playing against you. It's just not enjoyable for them to get thier butts handed to them while I have an easy time of it simply because I know the interface. I have tried a few times with the demos.
So yeah I love combat mission even with it's really bad backdrops and very claustrophobic maps with no campaign map for context. Flanking is hard and unrealistic with a map that has such sharp edges. Sure WARNO, STEEL DIVISION 2 and even company of heroes have the same problem. But the large maps of Eugen games and or the gameplay of those games mentioned ensure that gaps appear. Even though the combat mission maps often seem large, they always felt to me like they were too small to do much but a frontal assault.
I WOULD be playing combat mission cmx2 instead of coh or eugens offerings most likely if the multiplayer aspect and the maps were sorted. The titles I own I have barely played but really liked what I did play of them.
I own and have put on steam where I can:
cmx2 normandy plus two expansions and some engine upgrades which come free on steam iirc
cmx2 italy and all but the last expansion (rome iirc)
cmx2 shock force (but not 2)
cmx2 ww2 russia
Some of the red thunder maps are large enough for flanking maneuvers, you found those too small also? The problem I've always had with combat mission was the performance, play a large map in RT requires a lot of units and the camera spends most of the time lagging the mouse unless you turn everything in the options off or low. It's basically unplayable, thought they were doing a performance patch on this at some point - wonder what the effect will be after the patch.

I agree. Combat Mission's performance especially with the camera was pretty hard to take if you're not playing it in WEGO mode.
The red thunder maps were a little more expansive and yes more open to flanking. But I always wondered because of the map edges what the neighboring enemy units off the edge of the map should be doing if I flank past them on the map edge.
WARNO is finally released from early access and into the wild. Might have to give her a whirl.
The gold edition discount will be retro actively given to early access buyers when they finally get that item into the store.
Boy did they screw up that "Gold" release, or what?
They sure did. The Gold Editon should have been available to early access peeps before release at a sizeable discount, but instead was added to steam after release. When I looked gold edition it cost more than the base game for me to upgrade to. I am hoping they fix this soon.

Did you read the dev update on it? They can't fix it. instead they are offering free content in the form of exclusive divisions for early adopters who still upgrade to Gold. Problem is, those divisions will take time to develop. The price of the gold upgrade will not go down.
No I hadn't. That's very disappointing.
The flippant way the apology reads made me laugh at how inept it seemed. They are obviously trying to seem upbeat and in control by making little jokes, but this attitude just managed to horrify me. If I was unfamiliar with Eugen I would be angry at how little they cared about this screw up. I was on the fence about getting the gold pack given that it essentially just seems to be more divisions in the same theatre, but would have bitten given the early access discount. Now it makes no sense to buy it at all until later, there is no incentive, as an early access guy I get all the apology goodies without having to buy the now overpriced gold edition that gives me nothing right now anyway.
Here is the apology. Examples of what I am talking about:
"However, we hope to make amends for this little snafu."
"the horror! We have punished those responsible and put them together with the latest batch of interns in Eugen's coal shed for a much-needed "reeducation" program."
"Making a game is hard, but releasing and marketing a game is even harder, or so it seems. "
"Now, these Guides are pretty kick-ass, and we think this goes part-way to righting the ship, but we understand this gift might not be for everyone. Before you raise your torches and pitchforks again, there is more!"
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1611600/view/4184486168263013169?l=english
^ I don't honestly see what's so egregious about those statements. Especially the "Making a game is hard" statement, which just reads to me as a bit of honest reflection about their screwup. As for the jokey tone, well, maybe I'd find it baffling if they were talking about how they had to cancel the game and nobody will get refunds, or if they accidentally killed a customer. But botching a release discount (even one that was promised) seems pretty low stakes to me.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding?
I think you got what Eugen intended you to get out of their statement which is good. A lot no doubt will not and that is the worry.
I think Eugen should have been serious and professional about an apology. Cracking jokes about costing your customers extra money opens them to a lot of criticism and their is no need for it.
The end result of this "light hearted, good natured" screw up, is that early access fans "will" now spend more than they should have to in order to get future content. Some no doubt will not be amused with the "funny" office antics excuse, honest or not.
On the flip side of that I'm sure there are many including myself who will want the game (I have it since very early access) because of its subject, genre and studio and don't really care about all the behind the scenes antics
It's a game they want at a price they'll pay - it doesn't matter if there's non funny jokes about what went wrong
I guess it's a difference of perspective because the way I see it, they're a small studio, it was an honest mistake and not some "gee whiz we mismanaged our business and have to charge you more so we don't lay off our staff" kind of situation. I'm willing to cut them slack and be forgiving about their goofy tone.
Getting the game at a lower discount is a bummer for sure, but it's not like that money's getting burned in a pit or going to a Nigerian prince -- it's going to the people who made the game to support further development. I'm sure an extra ten bucks or whatever isn't going to break anybody's bank who was set on picking this up no matter what.
I am glad you boys understand. I am a big fan of Eugen and know their unique sense of humour pretty well, so it's no big deal for me either. For a few of my friends it will be as they have strict gaming budgets and for those that were already opposed to the endless DLC model Eugen uses it will also be.
The last thing that bummed me out about them was when they said map making tools were coming to steel division 2. They made it into WARNO though.

Isn't this the same Eugen that was all but accused of treating its employees like Roman era slaves resulting in a Spartacus-like revolt? I think some former employees probably would feel like the "coal shed reeducation camp" joke isn't that far off from the truth.
Just finished a coop campaign with a friend during some time off work:

Really only just noticed that WARNO will be moving to different environments and terrain sets. This really puts paid to any possability of a SD3. However I guess their will be a lot to look forward to. I have almost settled down to enjoying the tank gameplay now. I am not noticing the penetration messages and more focussing on the "integrity" bars of health as an overall indication. Penetrations I guess could be anything from engines, tracks or even the front guard.
But how was it in real life? Before the Israeli's learnt to suppress enemy ATGM teams, were their tanks taking one hit and being knocked out?
I still have to get back to testing if ATGMs that should not be able to penetrate still do damage, I guess they still burn through some armour, weakening the tank.
"With the current list of Army General campaigns, we have shed a comprehensive light on World War III centered on West (and East) Germany, and even some Czechoslovakia. We will move to other theaters of war, but to do this, we need to create new environments, sets of terrain, new maps, etc. All of this takes time. Our 3D artists have already started to take the first tentative steps; we hope to be able to share the fruits of their labor in the not-too-distant future."
Very pleasantly surprised to see the next DLC headed to Latin America. A lot of opportunity for great gaming.
QuoteHello commanders!
As teased in last week's DevBlog, the moment has come to reveal the next major expansion of your favorite Cold War-gone-hot RTS... WARNO - Tropic Storm!
That's right: like a hurricane, World War III expands to the tropical locales of Latin America and the Caribbean Basin in this upcoming expansion.
In today's DevBlog, we'll start with the basic outline of the expansion, its features, and the alternative history behind WARNO - Tropic Storm. Later posts will dive deep into all the new divisions.
Let's go!
WARNO - Tropic Storm in Brief
WARNO - Tropic Storm will give you access to 6 new divisions from this brand-new theater of operations, including 4 new nations, and a host of new units, models, weapons, new terrain sets and maps, and more. And equally important: it will contain 1 new Army General campaign. More details to follow!
Now, originally, the WARNO - Tropic Storm expansion was planned to come later down the production pipeline, but as so often in recent years, real life overtakes the fiction at an alarming pace. We've fast-tracked the development due to the US administration's military actions in Venezuela not too long ago, thinking we would be right on the ball with the world's next hot spot. But then, it moved to Greenland, and now Iran...
Regardless, our decision still stands, and we are hard at work on getting WARNO - Tropic Storm into your hands. Now, more on the context and our (alternative) history below, plus a sneak peek into the new environments you'll get to play with. Don't let the palm tree-lined beaches and turquoise seas beguile you...
How WARNO - Tropic Storm Came to Be
So, how did WARNO's World War III arrive on Latin America's doorsteps? We took inspiration from two real-life events to craft our alternative timeline, both centered on Venezuela: the bloodily crushed riots of February 1989 and the failed coup attempt by Hugo Chávez's MBR-200 revolutionary group in 1992.
Within WARNO's timeline, we first shift to 1987, our major inflection year, which you might remember from the game's opening cinematic, in which Gorbachev is ousted as the leader of the Soviet Union by a Stalinist-inspired troika.
With the two power blocs gearing up for war, Soviet and Cuban agents begin to renew the flames of revolution across Latin America. So too in Venezuela, where a disgruntled Chavez's MBR-200 is identified as a potential partner for covert intel and funding. Over the next two years, with communist support, Chávez expands his organization's influence within the Venezuelan military.
The Caracazo
The moment to change the fate of a nation appears in February and March 1989, when deeply unpopular austerity measures result in violent riots and a brutal crackdown by the Venezuelan government, an episode known as the Caracazo.
Within a month, the MBR-200 triggers its well-planned coup: President Pérez's plane is shot down by a Venezuelan Air Force's Mirage, while key sites and buildings in the capital are seized with minimal blood spilled. A week later, Chávez is sworn in as the new president of Venezuela; a new socialist Bolivarian Revolution is at hand! He immediately takes steps to form suspiciously close ties to Castro's Cuba and the Soviet Union.
A United Response
The United States, focused on the Warsaw Pact's build-up in Europe, is taken completely aback by Chavez's coup in Venezuela. While various communist-inspired uprisings and counter-revolutions have wrecked nations in Latin America throughout the 1980s, with Venezuela turning "red", a dangerous new strategic conondrum has developed.
Washington takes the first steps, a continuation of former President Reagan's "New Cold War", to massively increase the military assistance and aid to several "trustworthy" South American allies, in effect creating an anti-communist regional coalition. In the spring of 1989, all eyes are on containing the new Venezuelan regime.
As the first rumors emerge of Cuban "advisors" and the Soviet KGB actively taking part in the Venezuelan coup, it doesn't take long for the CIA to be convinced of Castro's direct involvement.
In June 1989, with war on the horizon in Europe, the USA makes a historical decision for a decisive pre-emptive strike and clear out its backyard of the communist threat. Leaning on the South American allies, and using whatever non-NATO assigned troops it has in reserve, it takes the fight to both Cuba and Venezuela...
New Terrain Set
With WARNO - Tropic Storm, we'll have a new tropical environment, plus new maps. These will also make their way into the expansion's new Army General campaign!
We might not always be ahead of time on our pre-announced schedule, but in the case of the new terrain sets coming to WARNO, our level designers have delivered beyond expectations.
The upcoming new maps will showcase the tropical breadth and scale of Latin America, with exotic new environments: from dense jungle limiting visibility to turquoise coastlines useful for sunbathing or large-scale amphibious assaults, to compact urban terrain. Every element has been carefully crafted and designed by the Eugen team, to really be as authentic as possible.
It's not only the visuals where we improved; we also took the opportunity to further improve map balancing, optimize sightlines between potential defensive positions, and update the urban terrain to make for even more intense tactical fights.
