Title: Friday Tock
Post by: Dammit Carl! on December 31, 2021, 02:48:27 PM

Time to get reflective.  Time to think about where you are at now.  And time to get hopeful.

All the best to you, you Grogggy few, and hope you all have a good new year.

p.s. Too much time on the TickTok made me mislabel the subject, lol.  Such a putz.

Well said, brother.

A happy and healthy New year to all.

Going to play some DCS, M&B Bannerlord, Star Citizen and maybe some Titanfall 2. Will also play more Nebulous Fleet Command.

Happy New Year, fellers.

Continuing blasting through Age of Empires 2 campaigns, just won the new Lords of the West, six chapter campaign as Burgundy. Very well done.

If I can pull myself away from AoE, I will get in some time with the 1212 mod for Attila: Total War, Age of Empires IV and hopefully some A Plague Tale: Innocence.

The Great War mod (v6.0) also waits in the wings.

Happy New Year all.

Star Citizen - My space combat has all of a sudden become almost unplayable. Need to investigate what is going wrong here as nobody else is having this problem
Mordhau - I hate the damn thing for being a slow motion slasher with haymakers and some ridiculous mechanics - like blocking. But War of the Roses no longer exists. Sometimes I feel like a slasher.
World of Warships - Friends dragged me back into this.

Happy New Year to Grogheads everywhere. The only fighting I'll be doing this weekend is probably against the Flu. Maybe something else if I feel a little better.

Feel better Sir Slash.

As for me, and excellent pick there Carl, I am tinkering with Napoleon Total War Demo. Mostly trying to see how to win Ligny.  I am impressed with how the demo is but I can't quite grok the controls.

Pint of Guinness Stout for me tonight.

Taking a break from trying to get a Lego-crafted aircraft to fly in Trailmakers.  :pullhair:

See you in 2022.

Happy New Year boys!

Yep.  Descending into the strangely nostalgia soaked world of the US. Civil War.  I say this partly cuz one of my earliest happy memories is of contemplating a Confederate Submarine parked outside of
the Cabildo on Jackson Square in New Orleans AND I see GMT is working on a Confederate submarine game.  Seems interesting at least.

Yeah.  So true.  "Confederate Submarines"  -- almost a proverbial niche but not even quite that.  On the other hand, the technology of the Civil War is tantalizingly close to being reasonably effective.
They had "gun cotton" for example and telegraphs and steam engines and repeating rifles.  It's only a few years before decent bolt-action rifles and torpedoes with gyroscopes and so on.  And yet of course
a lot of the weapons are startlingly antiquated.  For example the Belgian muskets mentioned in Peter Cozzen's book on the Shenandoah in 1862:

THERE PROVED TO be an element of truth in the tale the audacious Illinois captive had told Jackson. Reinforcements did reach Bath, but they were scarcely of a caliber to inspire confidence. Shortly after midnight, Col. William G. Murray led the 84th Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers into town. A regiment less prepared for battle could scarcely be imagined. The 84th was just four days removed from its training camp, and the men had only been issued weapons that morning. Those they were given—cumbersome, bent-barreled .69-caliber Belgian muskets, caked shut with tallow—were "more dangerous at their butts than at their muzzles." No sooner had the men shouldered their worthless muskets than they were ordered into canal boats and ferried across the Potomac; two frantic couriers from Bath had brought Colonel Murray word of the impending attack.

.69 caliber Belgian muskets  :o

I had to look up what gun cotton is too - you're right, that is surprisingly modern sounding for 1862.

What you describe above with the ancient vs. modern is what has always fascinated me about the First World War, too.

Space missions are better than the ground missions Odyssey added.   It has improved a lot compared to the initial release but I have a feeling many switched to Star Citizen (e.g. on Twitch there are 200 viewers for Elite and 5K for Star Citizen streams).
I'm sure in time more content will be added but right now the Odyssey part is a bit barren.   I paid around $18 for the expansion in a sale and I feel it is worth that.  If I paid full price at release my sentiment would be different.

I also think for me Elite is easier to get into and right now I'm looking for a more relaxing kind of gameplay.

Well I was forced to stop playing the 1212AD mod...tonight it just failed to load or crashed to desktop about a dozen times, even after verifying the game files. I was having some good fun with it too.

All is not lost as I found this '1100 AD' mod for Rome 2: TW:

Sure thing. I'll be taking the 1100AD mod for a spin this weekend, either as Kievan Rus or the Holy Roman Empire. I didn't even know this mod existed until yesterday afternoon.

I saw that video in my YouTube feed yesterday too.  I just dl'd the 1212 mod for Atilla.  I'll try that 1100 mod as well for RTW2.

I will say this though, if you are a Total War fan there sure is a lot of user created content out there recently that has brought new life to these games.

Why you gotta bring me down, breh?

I had all but written that mod off years ago, I didn't know they were still working on it.

Don't know if there are trenches in the mod but it looks like they thought of everything else.

The campaign/strategic element looks exceptional, but the battles are really just immersion killing for me.

'The Terminator' was raving about the battles, but I haven't played the mod yet so I don't know if trenches are modeled or not. I do know that they modeled flamethrower troops. Flamethrower troops!

I don't know who "The Terminator" is or whether he knows anything about combat in World War I. I'm sure the tactical battles are "fun" but they will definitely be patterned on the 19th century model with units duking it out in line formations out in the open. That is what I can tell from all screenshots and videos I have seen. I do not think the Total War engine is capable of modding in the kind of entrenchments and fortifications that were common on the Western front.

Play around with it and let us know what you discover.

Crotchety or not you are correct regarding how Total War handles WW1 combat.  I've got at least 10 hours into the mod and I can say that yes the rifle units do tend to duke it out in the open in perfect ordered formations.  However what they did do is model artillery to be very close to what a WW1 barrage would have been.  In this mod tactical battles degenerate into masses of infantry out in the open being hammered to death by arty.  It feels much different from vanilla Total War.  Even so this is not WW1 trench combat in any way.  But it really is great fun none the less.   :)

I'm still not sure what I'll play this evening.  I truly am overwhelmed with new games to try, and old games I love.  I'd like to get into Combat Mission: Cold War as I've barely scratched the surface of it.

I'm almost certain I'll be playing some Cold Waters, too.

I dunno...I might have to wait until tonight and update this thread with what I actually end up playing.

It was okay.  Kind of a very small battle since I didn't survive long as Duke of Normandy.  I switiched to the Byzantines and I expect naval action versus some usurpers at least pretty soon.  Some Byzantine ships will have Greek Wildfire apparently so that might be interesting.  Meanwhile even the Genoese are beating me up in Greece.  I think I might hold on since the Byzantine infantry is really tough.  I lost the town when I was taking screenshots for this small battle in Greece.  In the screenshot, the Byzantine Garison has just wiped out the Genoese commander's cavalry bodyguard but is being charged by Genoese infantry while part of the town burns:
