Even though I don't by as much as I used to (thankfully) I still look forward to the sales and perhaps grabbing a bargain or two.

Or three.

Lunar Sale? Is that only at night?  ;D  I will feign disinterest, but cave and obsessively check for bargains to brag about here.

The amateur astronomer in me is forced to mention that the moon not only is visible at night but also during day time  :nerd:.
The moon is exclusively visible at night when it is full moon :coolsmiley:.

You can imagine how much a wargaming, amateur astronomer and punk music fan was popular at school  :bd:.

I know right?

Although the frequency of the sales have increased over the years the number of absolutely insane discounts has dramatically decreased.  Most of the items, at least the ones I want, don't go for more than 10%-25% off.  I really want to see at least 50%-75% off.

That being said I'll probably cave in and pick up a few trinkets.  LOL

I live in Europe where, as you all know, we don't have Thanksgiving.  But we do have Black Friday sales !   Most people don't know the origin but they still spend a lot of money.
So far Lunar Sale hasn't reached us ...

It is a little bit funny Capitalism celebrates a Communist holiday.

The funny thing is that the lunar holiday goes back to ancient times, before the advent of communism if I'm not mistaken.

But yes in today's atmosphere Steam is paying homage to the communists in charge over there in the far east.  ;)

So Three Kingdoms TW for $29.99. Yeah or nay? Hasn't it been this price before?

^I have not played it (yet) but some say it is one of the better, recent TW games.

I've got it and I think I picked it up a while back for about that same price IIRC.
It's not a bad game and very enjoyable.  A little different than Warhammer Total War and definitely different from older titles.  I also love the historical setting as I'm a big Romance of the Three Kingdoms junkie.

But you know what.  Although this game is good, it just doesn't grab me with the same ferocity as the other Total War games do.  Not sure why but just throwing that out there as a data point.
Title: Re: Steam sale starts tomorrow

^Probably for similar reasons as to why I haven't even played it yet. The time period and culture are just alien to me.

Same here really. I'm totally ignorant of Chinese history and confused by all the players/factions. I will most likely pass on it again.

It's worth it. I tried to play the free weekend steam had last year and bounced off of it hard. I picked up MS PC game pass for a song ($1 for 3 months) and managed to put in the time to learn and grabbed it on the Steam winter sale in December for keeps.

I actually think they significantly improved the game taking the naval aspects out of it that were in CS2.

Thanks Jamus - what do you like most about CKIII? I (embarrassingly) have not played the earlier games in the series but the medieval/Renaissance era is my jam.
Title: Re: Steam sale starts tomorrow
Post by: al_infierno on January 28, 2022, 02:58:53 PM
Crusader Kings II and III are both incredibly immersive medieval dynasty sims.  There's no other game that truly gives you the "playing in the Game of Thrones world" more than CK3 despite not being a fantasy setting.  The beginning is a bit slow, but once you reach the second or third generation you'll have a pretty decent network of family characters going, including brothers and cousins and uncles who may or may not have your back, or they may just want to see that Damocles Sword fall on your head.  It takes a while to get your grips on the game and figure out what it is you're "doing" for most of the game loop, but once you do it is a massive time sink.

Just don't turn on Iron Man until you're ready to pull your hair out  :bd:  Savescumming is the way to learn and have fun.

The best thing I like is the hardest thing to learn about it.

Basically the CK series is about people vs the concept of nations, which makes sense given the time period. It's a significant difference from EU or HoI and somewhat hard to explain.

You cannot "paint the map" so to speak until extremely late in the game due to succession laws.

I feel it lends itself to more to role playing that most CRPGs. It also plays more heavily into character traits that help or hinder your empire, yourself or both.

You can go from playing a benevolent leader to a sadistic shit in the same playthrough and have it feel completely natural.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Post by: Gusington on January 28, 2022, 03:27:38 PM
Yeah from descriptions like yours and others it sounds very unique in that way, which is so rare.

More mundane question: are different era start dates available in CKIII?
Title: Re: Steam sale starts tomorrow
Post by: al_infierno on January 28, 2022, 03:37:18 PM
Yeah I should have mentioned, the CK series really feels more to me like an RPG than a grand strategy game, even though there's a map and a strategic layer.

Unfortunately I don't think CK3 has different start dates.  CK2 has a lot more content, start dates, mods, etc. but it's also got a steeper learning curve than 3.
Title: Re: Steam sale starts tomorrow
Post by: jamus34 on January 28, 2022, 03:56:00 PM
Al is correct, only two start dates; early is ~862 I think and the later one is around 1016. I think the game ends around 1450 or so.

Star Citizen is taking it to a new level with its "Red Festival 2952". Help spread fortune and prosperity around the verse by participating in Stanton's Red Festival traditions. Hunt down red envelopes scattered around the system's hubs then sell them at kiosks.  Purchase and add limited edition Red Festival paint schemes featuring stunning crimson tints with auspicious gold flourishes representing the Chinese zodiac.

Yikes. Definitely gives me douche chills.
