This is probably going to be a hard game for me, but the hype machine has been effective and decided to pre order. Supposedly like other "soul" games where I simply sucked but this one has open world and hooked my interest so what the heck, preloads started yesterday depending where you ordered.

From a technical basis I love From software games but good god I suck at them. I'm sure I will get it eventually but I have a hard time justifying full price.
Yep, I am not good either. There have been a number of discounted pre order sales, so I didn't pay full price either. I forget what I paid, somewhere in the $40s.

Yeah I've decided to run through some of my backlog and am probably going to pick up Horizon Forbidden West before this anyway. I am currently running through the game now after hitting a wall but watched a couple of YouTubes on tactics for it and holy hell am I having fun now.

I have heard people talk about that one, but seems like an exclusive for PlayStation so I'll have to sit that one out as I don't have one.
Yeah although the first one (Horizon Zero Dawn) was released on PC so there's hope it will eventually port.
First game is definitely worth your time. Can be finicky at times but it's amazing what they were able to put together.
I also suck at Souls games. Patiently awaiting to read how merciful (or not) the implementation of the open world is here. I will definitely dive in if it sounds forgiving.
I'm a huge Dark Souls/FromSoftware fan and I can play these games fairly well. Here is a video from a very knowledgeable chap on all things Dark Souls to give you a little background story on Elden Ring.
This game does look great but I probably won't get it despite my interest. I just don't have the extreme patience required to play these games properly anymore.
I kind of want to see this one settle first before I decide to commit... Also, I just have so many other great games that I just don't have time for already.

Dark Souls got great reviews, and after giving it a couple of fair shots, it's safe to say it is Not For Me. So I think I'll wait for the Grogheads review on this.
For most games, though, I'm not really looking for a challenge. I get challenged at work. When I get home, I'm looking for something that will fool me into thinking I'm overcoming a challenge--not an ACTUAL challenge....

Animal Crossing New Horizons got great reviews. Doesn't mean it is my kind of game, just that it is probably good in its genre.
I got to the last boss of Dark Souls 1 but never managed to beat him. He was so fast you practically couldn't use potions at all without getting hit unless you timed them perfectly. I finished DS3 with help of a buddy on co-op, so I don't expect to get super far into this one on my own. :buck2:
Anyway, I bought this a few weeks ago after seeing it was discounted pretty heavily on GreenManGaming, so got this preloading already. <:-)

Recently bought New World and what a total complete hunk of dogshit. That game alone has put in the boat of waiting for reviews/bug fixes.

I bought New World too and ended up uninstalling it after 100+ hours of game time. Took me that long to realize what an empty shell of a game it is.
Seems the main negatives I see so far relate to the performance on the pc although some mention day one patch to correct. I originally was considering buying on Xbox, hope I didn't choose wrong platform:)
I'm loving it so far, but the performance is really marginal on PC even after the day one patch. It basically feels like Red Souls Redemption in a dark fantasy version of medieval England - it has the classic Dark Souls combat formula with a more open world, horseback riding, and gathering herbs in the wild. I had some brief issues with the screen flickering black during boss fights, which killed me during [spoiler]the initial fake-out boss fight and then again in the first real boss fight[/spoiler]. I changed my graphical settings to Low and that resolved the issue, which is a pretty decent workaround for the time being. Once I did that I kicked the first boss's A$$ with my naked club-wielding cavemen. :knuppel2:

I presume if you were a hardcore Dark Souls fan, maybe this will not appeal as much? I really disliked Dark Souls, so maybe I will enjoy this one....
I wasn't a huge fan of dark souls either so I am about to find out myself. Unfortunately, didn't get any play time yesterday because it not being released until later in the day, so hopefully this weekend. I see a ton of issues being reported about controllers not working so if that ends up being the case for me, then it goes on the shelf until fixed since no way I can play with keyboard:)

One dutch gaming site titled their review (freely translated): "Elden Ring is a big masterpiece, for a small group".
All the combat and boss fight DNA of a souls game, but on the overworld it makes it easier to travel, but in the dungeons its as focused as previous games in the series.
If you didn't like Dark Souls I'd pass on Elden Ring as well.

The mixed reviews seem to mainly revolve around optimization and performance rather than gameplay.
Haven't seen any performance issues or problems with controller yet.....but that could be because I can't get very far without being destroyed by the bosses and monsters. Just as tough as I remember:) Also not liking where I respawn sometimes. If I am going to die all the time, I at least want to respawn very close to where I left off, but seems like I have to redo more stuff than I would like.
I'm 4.5 hours in and I have not had any issues so far.
I did reactivate the turbo mode on the cpu which i had to turn off for Warhammer 3 and turned off or lowered
some options just in case to see if it ran ok. I was afraid it would be as bad as wh3.
The game is great so far.
Good to hear that there is no performance issues. I'm still holding off of WH3 as well due to the rumors of performance issues but I'm glad to see Elden Ring has been running fine for you guys.
After a solid 30-ish hours of playtime according to Steam, I can easily recommend this to anyone who is cautiously interested in the Souls series. This is by far the most accessible FromSoft title thus far. If you get frustrated with a boss fight, you can just romp around the open world or find another dungeon and boss to take on - unlike the Souls games where you're pretty much railroaded into specific encounters. The combat system is still just as brutal as ever (it being obviously based on the Dark Souls engine) but there are more ways to mitigate the brutality, such as horseback combat in the open world. I can gladly recommend this to anyone who likes the idea of weighty third-person fantasy combat.
How are you all liking the George Martin written story and lore?
From what I understand Martin's contributions are minimal, mainly providing the lore and backstory that informs the game's world and writing. That said there are a lot of neat touches that remind me of Game of Thrones, such as a greatsword that's made of many different grafted-together longswords taken from fallen warlords a la The Iron Throne, and characters who come from Great Houses that like to recite their family's house words.
^Nice. As another guy who generally sucks at souls games, I will try this out when it gets discounted. Maybe the free-roaming, open world aspects will help me out.
The Martin involvement kind of peaked my interest a little. I'm not a fantasy d&d guy at all, game of thrones is as far as I'll go. So if there's any of that lore in there, I might have to take a look at this.
resurrecting this a bit as I was late to the party but after some early game running into the brick wall damn this thing has grabbed me.
To give an example of my love / hate of From Software games...I own everything except Sekiro Shadows die twice. (Original Demon Souls on PS3, all Dark Souls on PC, Bloodborne on PS4).
I bounced...HARD...off every single one.
I'm about 50 hours in now and just beat Radahn...what a cast iron bitch that battle was.
To me, Elden Ring is what a CRPG D&D wishes it could be.
No handholding...no mercy. You start weak as kitten and need to run from almost everything. You shouldn't fight what the game deems the first "true boss" until you leveled about 10-20 times and are like 10 hours into the game. Oh and that one sub-boss that everyone talks about...yeah you still need to run like hell from him.
Where as the early games made you focus on your technical gameplay...this gives you the option of "get gud" or walk away, gain a few more levels, maybe find a better spell / upgrade weapons and then come lay the smackdown.
The story is good...but overall the game is not big on introspection. The Radahn battle (pre and post) are probably the largest pieces I've seen so far.
The one thing I'd like to add that I never felt in the other FS games (granted it might be due to me not being able to get deep into them)...you can build your character a TON of ways, and they can all mostly be valid to play.
Barbarian swinging a gignomous colossal sword 2 handed, check.
An assassin type dual wielding daggers stacking a ton of elemental damage of your choice, yup.
A mage, But of course.
A cleric...ok, somewhat harder here but kinda possible, there are self healing spells, flails, maces and the like. Might be harder to play in some respects but doable.
Archer / ranger, Yessir.
Cavalier - horseback is limited in some areas but sure, right a horse with a spear / lance / halberd.
And that's just scratching the surface.
got to the mountaintop of giants and havent logged back in since. playing a spellcaster so kinda easy mode. i also outleveled most areas and bosses before i tackled them. i dont know how people have done ng+ multiple times. don' think i will finish it once! steam shows i have 140 hours in game but most of that was alt tabbed as i was looking up stuff like where to find items, quest stuff and what to expect from certain areas. i did get farther with this game than i did with nioh so definitely got my moneys worth i would say.
I was going to pick up the new DLC tomorrow as was receiving favorable reviews, but learned you have to complete certain things within the base game to make it even accessible. I am nowhere near completing those things:) Was kind of hoping you weren't tied to the base game but probably makes sense as likely a continuation of the story and might not make sense just jumping in. Guess the good news, saved me some money tomorrow, now what to spend it on:)
