Title: Website looks like this on PC (Firefox and Edge)
Post by: Ian C on February 28, 2022, 11:27:21 AM
Have your style sheets gone AWOL ? This looks like this using Firefox and Microsoft Edge, however, on Android tablets it looks normal.

Your main page also looks fine.

I see you're logged out there. What happens when you log in?

I've seen webpages load like this before, including Grogheads forums.  The problem usually clears itself over time.  Some things you could try:  clearing browser caches and running ccleaner.

I have the same problem on my PC. Been like that since before last Thanksgiving. Looks fine on my Kindle. I run CCleaner Pro every day.

It's weird. The forum page looks fine but reading each post looks like the screenshot.

Take the "s" out of https in the address bar.  That clears it for me.

Yep, use of HTTPS in the web site address is the cause.  If you turn on developer tools for Chrome which allows you to debug, you'll see the following error displayed:

Mixed Content: The page at '<URL>' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure element '<URL>'. This request was automatically upgraded to HTTPS, For more information see <URL> index.php:4 Mixed Content: The page at 'https://www.grogheads.com/forums/index.php?board=5.0' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure stylesheet 'http://grogheads.com/forums/Themes/default/css/index.css?fin20'. This request has been blocked; the content must be served over HTTPS.

Basically this means the main forum page is using an HTTPS connection (secure encrypted connection), therefore the other content it calls such as the various style sheets (responsible for formatting the page) must also use an HTTPS connection to be fully secure.  As you can see in the above error message, the CSS files (style sheets) are using an HTTP connection, therefore its considered insecure and blocked resulting in the style sheets not loaded making the page appearance look bad.  Since a normal user doesn't have control over changing the actual page source code to be HTTPS, only way for you to make it work is to change the main page to HTTP so they all match.  I assume the forum software site/pages could be configured in a way to enforce full usage of HTTPS, therefore everything would be encrypted, not requiring the use of HTTP.

With HTTPS (secure-but issues loading content)
https://www.grogheads.com/forums/index.php

Without HTTPS (insecure-but content loads correctly)
http://www.grogheads.com/forums/index.php

Of course there is a downside in not using an HTTPS connection.  Basically anything you type will not be encrypted and in theory available for someone to intercept if they knew how and were capable  On a forum site, might not be a big deal, but hopefully your not using the same username and password for this site that you use for more sensitive sites such as banking:)

The early nineties look of that mis-loaded page makes me feel nostalgic.

Man, I hated it when I started having to go into the "DOS Shell" to get a C:\ prompt!

I've been having this problem for about 18 months now, and not been able to access this platform on my browser of choice (Chrome) for about 18 months now.   :tickedoff:

One reason I've posted so seldom is because I had to open a different browser to see what was going on over here.  It's good to know that there is a simple solution!

I get nostalgic over startup sounds. I think he got the Windows 2000 wrong though - that's the Windows ME startup sound.

Wow- Windows 10 won't allow you to change your startup sound. Tried a few 'fixes' - it doesn't work.
How ridiculous. To me, hearing the Windows ME startup sound is like taking a pull on a Marlboro.

If you are ok with muting the startup sound you can do that : Deselect the Play Windows Startup Sound (or click on the Sound Scheme dropdown menu (Sound Control Panel) and select the No Sounds option to stop all sounds).

CSS are overrated. More trouble than they are worth.
