Can anyone who lives in the area confirm that this PSA was aired locally?
I've also seen pictures of instructions regarding surviving nuclear attacks posted in shopping malls.
Yes. It was aired locally.
There is nothing to gain by posting about it here though, unless you have a serious interest in discussing preparedness for nuclear attacks. Otherwise, comments of a political nature will be removed.
Thanks.
I understand. I don't intend this to be political.
More of checking the validity of what I read.
Don't worry JH, I'm trying to behave. :)
To keep the commentary apolitical, it still is pretty surreal to see this kind of thing aired when it feels right out of the Cold War. Maybe I'm ignorant, but I don't recall publicly broadcasted nuclear attack preparedness warnings basically ever since the fall of the Soviet union?

There is no doubt that this broadcast was unusual and that as a result, it created a lot of fear and concern. However, the emergency services department responsible for airing it has advised that there is no particular or specific known threat that prompted this programming and that it is just another tool for general emergency preparedness.
I find the content of the broadcast more amusing than anything else...go inside, stay away from windows, take a shower....really?
Why mess with perfection?
I vaguely remember one of my high school teachers mentioning that when he was little they used to teach the duck and cover under a school desk.
That or get in a handy fridge. They stop radiation and physics! I remember finding a fridge with a skeleton and a fedora in it in Fallout 4 and getting a chuckle.
I can't be the only one here old enough to have actually done duck and cover drills at school - the last one I remember doing was in 1986, I was 12, at my elementary school in Brooklyn.
And at this point the local NYC news has me believing that nuking NYC might be a serious improvement from the current filth, crime and general chaos.

I did them in grade school down in Texas.
I never had to do the duck and cover drills but they did make us watch Threads and The Day After and then have a school assembly about it.
Stupidest drills I had to do were in Japan. They have these ridiculous "anti-stabination" polearms on a rack in the principal's office. We were supposed to grab them and pin would-be school stabbers to the wall with them. As the token foreigner, I always had to play the assailant while some 95 lb woman and chain-smoking 60 year old immobilized me.

^That is unlike anything I have ever seen.

I've seen those on forklifts for picking up barrels! (We have one on a forklift less than fifty feet from where I'm typing.)
More importantly: POLE ARMS!
Sure they're blunt and non-lethal but POLE ARMS! :D
It is essentially a sasumata. It is one of a number of tools/implements that were used by samurai police and security forces during the Edo period to arrest criminals without causing serious injury.
Yup, but at least the old timey satsumatas were kind of badass and had pointy bits. Ours had rubber end caps to avoid scuffing the walls.

I did Duck & Cover in grade school. Afterward, the teacher made me get out from under my desk and back in my seat. >:( We were taught Chalk Dust countered radiation exposure. But that was just the teacher trying to get her erasers cleaned for free. :coolsmiley:
Yeah but be fair, your duck and cover drills were meant to protect you from the Kaiser's Zeppelin raids.

That is not a Japanese Sasumata, though. That is a European man catcher. It was intended to be used on people wearing armor, so it was presumed that the spikes would not cause injury... \m/
I assume the spikey bits on the haft were for entangling clothes...or really unpleasant proctology exams.

I suppose the medieval world may have viewed "injury" or the absence of one, under a different standard than we of modernity.

That is definitely a Windy joke!

I'm not sure what the thing on the right was used for -- the right weapon has a sword-breaker quillions (like a sai, or the "aasagai"/death-stick I designed for my novels) but the spiky bits on the hafts were to keep people on the business end from grabbing the shaft. I figure the sword-catcher quillions are meant to catch swords flailing at the user.
during the late 70s and early 80s the majority of schools in south Floriduh were built to a design standard that allowed them all to be considered nuclear/disaster shelters. 2 story square concrete boxes in which we did run duck and cover drills.
as for the rest of the thread....
Im scared to think of the sex toys in JHs night table. :hide:
and if Im scared the rest of you should be terrified!
the weapon on the right is called a Sodegarami...the small hooks were thrust into the kimono and then twisted in order to snag and entangle the clothing. Yes, the barbs on the sides of the pole were intended to prevent the target from grappling the pole.
how did you meet your wife?
I was walking to work with my antique European man catcher....
for a psa local tv can just run Threads or The Day After once a year each.
Our local courthouse had a basement, the only building in town that had one because anything in Fla. below 3 ft. would be under water. It was our town designated, 'Bomb Shelter'. How to God anyone thought you get an entire town's population into one city basement is beyond me and most people thought of it as a town joke. An even bigger joke was why would the Russkies waste a nuke on us?

Don't fool yourself - only the "important" people in town have a pass into that basement.
not to be a downer about the psa but.....
the last time I read into targeting options, NYC would be getting hit with at least 20 to 25 warheads in a grid pattern.
theres no getting inside. the one mushroom cloud per city is media bs.
^awesome

That's why you bring your Japanese pole arm.
Curious you should say that. "Japanese Polearm" is my code name to get into the basement. ::)
In Oklahoma in the 70s, it was a little ambiguous. Bomb drills and tornado drills were pretty much identical. As I think about it, I suspect that the tornado winds picking those little desks up would have made an elementary school classroom about the last place you'd want to be in a tornado.
FWIW, there was a false alarm (meaning it was accidentally triggered and there was no "This is only a drill" warning) for a nuclear attack in Hawaii 3 or 4 years ago. Some friends of mine were on vacation there with their 3 young daughters when it happened.

You're not being a downer, but a realist.
But yeah, I highly doubt that there would be any buildings left to run to. Now if someone is well outside the blast radius then yes, you want to get inside to at least survive the blast.

I remember that.
I also remember when Reagan said this...
^I can't even imagine if that happened today...
Good thing the joke bombed but not the country. :hide:
I thought I remembered that Hawaii red alert being due to the Norks testing long-range missiles in their direction?
Nope. It was just a mistake on the part of one of their municipal employees somewhere.
Good thing they didn't send in the Marines. Don't want to tip over any more Pacific islands.
^Yes FarAway is right. A gov't worker (not sure if Hawaii or federal) simply pressed the wrong button that set off the Hawaii false alarm. Scary.
I would put a cover over that button. And a solid steel cage. And then park an M-1 Abrahms tank on top of it.
The tank may set it off.
In that case, the tank can be used as a Fallout Shelter. O0
Fortunately for us, Hawaii doesn't have its own nuclear arsenal...
I've heard rumors that the Jewish Space Lasers we were talking about on the Ukraine thread might have their control center deep in a volcano on the Big Island, but I don't think that's been confirmed. Damned lava really masks IR signatures!
...
Every time I think it's impossible for those to sound more awesome...! :D
