Title: The Friday thread Labor Day edition
Post by: MetalDog on August 31, 2012, 06:20:42 AM
Monday is a holiday here in the United States.  Most of us will be off for the day.  With all that extra time, what will you be playing this weekend?

Thanks to Greybriar, I picked up CKII and Warlock, amongst others.  So, I will be making my first forays into those two VERY popular games.

^Hmmmm...not sure.  Might try to jump back into Legends of Pegasus, now that it has been patched up a little bit.

Just picked up the CMSF expansion bundle per recommendation of Judge, so will be doing some time on that..

On my laptop, I've been starting to get into AGEOD's BOA II (got it for free when Paradox sent out that news letter a few months ago).
Been watching The Revolution on Netflix and it gave me a hankering to start this game.

Will probably try to get some Rise of Flight in to visit my MP buds.

My German friend and I will be playing EVE Online on Saturday and probably Sunday. When he's not on, I plan on playing a bit of the original X-COM, Warlock, and/or Civ5.

It's on my to do list...i've launched many games but the gameplay is too slow for my taste. I love the map and think there's a lot of good things in it. I have yet to finish a game. Will do once...maybe in 10 years  :o

I bought it again on Impulse a while back as it's the full patched game (with the patches from one player).

Thanks to Greybriar, I picked up CKII and Warlock, amongst others.  So, I will be making my first forays into those two VERY popular games.

I jumped on the CKII bandwagon.  I've been the Count of Loon and the King of France.  I'm going to write Joni Mitchell about it.  I know a guy who knows her and he says she might want to write a song about CKII:

Bows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
etc.

So this weekend its:

CKII and working on being a Persian in that game if possible.

And now a word from Wikipedia:
Whence this remark in Montesquieu's Mes Pensées: "My Lettres persanes taught people to write letter-novels" (no. 1621).

And of course KG Chill will be bringing a chill to the Club Route in Where Eagles Dare if it can overrun the 101st Airborne's Glider Regiment.

Been home sick the last few days so I started a couple new games of Distant Worlds with the new patch. I'm really enjoying it so far. The first game I let the AI run everything, except for diplomacy and fleet creation and assignments. I've been sick and home from work the last few days and Distant Worlds on full auto is a really good time killer when your sick and don't want to concentrate too hard while playing. I still think the economy needs some balancing, its far to easy to have money then you can possibly spend after only an hour or two of game play. Unless you do something stupid like setting all your taxes to high early in the game and kill off your private sector you really can't go wrong. I normally let the AI manage my colony taxes, maybe I need to manually manage them in my next game.

I started a new character with Skyrim last night. My previous character's saves bugged out and I couldn't continue the main quest line. Trying to fix it via the console did even more interesting things to to my game. I kept all the saves, I just don't want to go back several hours of play to find one that works. I'm going to do a High Elf wizard. Right now I think I'm going to use mage robes, a 1-handed weapon, and destruction magic or a staff in my offhand. I'm thinking this is more of a Gandalf type character then a pure spell wielding mage.

Diablo 3: Inferno mode progression....or attempting to progress. Despite my frustration at dying a lot, I'm still really enjoying the game.

Fallen Enchantress: New patch is out for beta 4. After seeing some of the changes in beta 4 I'm cautiously optimistic that FE will actually be a good game.

Crusader Kings 2: I really need to try out the Sword of Islam DLC. Its been a month since I've bought it and have only fired it up once.

I'll be celebrating W8taminutette's (Revision 2) birthday this weekend.  Then I'm gonna BBQ some salmon and beef burgers oh yeah!!

Plan on getting some game time in.  For sure I'll be continuing my Armada PBEMs.  I want to try to get some Xbox time in and then try some PrON on my Mac which I haven't even downloaded yet after purchasing it on Gamersgate recently.

I have today and Monday off (yeah, shore duty!) so it is going to be a gaming smorgasbord this weekend.

In the lineup:
King Arthur 1 Original Campaign:  I booted this up again yesterday and I think I'm really going to make a press at finishing the campaign.  I had forgotten how pretty the game is, and how immersive.
Crusader Kings 2:  I united all of Scotland finally, but got excommunicated in the process...now what?
War of the Roses Beta:  I read that they made some more sweeping changes to the game but I didn't have a chance to play it last night.  I'm sure I'll spend some time with it and see what's different.  Definitely a "one more match" type of game.

I also plan to finish styling the Obutto, breaking down the old desk completely, and if I get my HOTAS set up maybe play some BMS Falcon or Rise of Flight.

Got my story deck for Day of Days, so a friend and I can FINALLY bust out Sergeants Miniatures Game this weekend. And a few of us are going to play Belfort and Runewars as well.

On the computer front, I've finally gotten around to Order of War. It's actually not bad so far...I like the macro view where you don't have to tell every single individual with a bazooka what to shoot at. And I think I'm also going to crank up Hegemony Gold for the first time, too.

^I've been following the Sergents game, and it does look very interesting, especially the diceless combat system. Plenty of nice looking components, and the figures really rock, especially since they are pre-painted. The main thing thats holding me back is its suitability for solo play, and the fact that its quite expensive.

I'm interested to get your thoughts on the game though .

Mind you, I think my decleration on war on Ratty was a tad premature, and that he has more assets around that first town than I was aware of. Poor tactical decision on my part, and a distinct lack of recon!

However, it did serve to distract him somewhat and pull some stuff in my direction. No sacrifice is too great in the cause of the Triumvirate.

I ended up finally starting up The Walking Dead yesterday. I was going to wait until all 5 episodes were out, but the Hell with that.

So far, I'm really liking it. One incredibly weird part, though...the news reporter didn't understand that a radio needs batteries to function? Or how to properly put said batteries in? Was one of the writers going through a particularly messy divorce with a reporter or something?  :)

Played an entire game of CKII as a Count in Ireland.  Had two strapping sons and two daughters.  As I was going to enjoy my dotage, both sons died in their twenties and left me with no playable heirs.  My game ended in 1109 Anno Domini.  Going back in for more now.

^How long did that first game take?
Title: Re: The Friday thread Labor Day edition
Post by: Silent Disapproval Robot on September 03, 2012, 12:27:27 PM
I'm about 40 years into my game as a Count of Ireland.  As usual, nothing's happened.  I've got my minion out trying to fabricate claims but nothing's come of it so far.  I married off the son to a Danish princess and once he took over the throne, I got called to a war in Lubeck.  By the time I got there, it was over so I just sailed back and had to deal with a pissed off vassal because the troops were gone too long.

Other than that, I just keep trying to win over my bishops so I can collect tax money instead of having them fling it at the Pope.  I'm pretty sure the game's just messing with me over this issue.  I had a 35 point popularity deficit to overcome with the first guy.  Granted him a title, paid him some cash under the table and had my council member from the pointy hat-and-Jesus-cookie brigade go and sweet talk him.  Took a few years but I finally won him over and, to reward me, he promptly took up the Cathar cause.  Off to the clink with him.  Had to win over the second one so I repeated the process and got him up to the point where he'd pay taxes to me and then the Count died and his son took over.  This God-walloper really didn't care for the son at all, so once again, it took several years and lots of gold to win him over and once I did, he up and died.  His replacement wasn't too unkindly disposed to the son so I was able to win him over fairly quickly, but then he too took up the Cathar cause so it was off to jail for him.  The 4th guy was a repeat of the first two, several years to win him over and then the Danish wife goes and has him snuffed.  Stupid cow...

^It sounds like CKII really is a solid historical RPG, like the box claims. I am eager to see how the combat is represented, even if it is abstracted. Do most campaigns involve a lot of waiting around though?

Also, I am thinking I may put The Witcher 2 aside for when I am in a more fantasy-type mood. It's just not grabbing me like I hoped it would, especially after playing Skyrim.

I think I may revisit Thief 3...oh yes...lurking in the shadows, running from guards and ghosts and demons...SWEET.

Title: Re: The Friday thread Labor Day edition
Post by: MetalDog on September 03, 2012, 01:57:09 PM
It took me the better part of twelve hours to get where I was.  There was a lot of waiting around.  You can speed up the clock, so it goes quicker.  There are periods of intense activity followed by long stretches of waiting for something to happen.  The combat has no input from you other than point your troops in the right direction and let'em go.  On the whole, I like it.  But, I'm pretty sure you are more action oriented.  Or at least need to be involved doing something all the time.

Post by: Gusington on September 03, 2012, 02:02:30 PM
^That is true most of the time (like playing Civ MP). But the historical content of CK II, and having playable Byzantines and Muslim factions...will keep me interested.

Downloading Alea Jacta Es demo right now, btw. Not sure how long this will take.

I don't have the Sword of Islam expansion, but I'm pretty sure I can play the Byzantines.  I've kept my forays in Ireland so far.  My second game crapped out after a failed attempt to press a vassals claim.  That game lasted about three hours before I resigned.

you can set up your armies before a battle and load the flanks with leaders that have good martial skills, heavy cavalry and such, then load the middle with your main martial and a crap load of pikemen and get involved with the initial set up - but once the battle starts youre a spectator. In recent patches theyve attempted to take away the get there with the mostest, firstest strategy - you can win a battle in which youre outnumbered if you take the time to set up the armies right - or you can go with 3 times as many men and just batter your way through.

I suppose the only issue is this is further down the line when youve managed to influence your army set up by building specific buildings in the provinces - some people go horse and archers only, some a mix
Title: Re: The Friday thread Labor Day edition

^I can deal with that. Does army composition vary between the factions?
Title: Re: The Friday thread Labor Day edition
Post by: undercovergeek on September 03, 2012, 02:29:41 PM
thats a good question, ive played in Spain, Italy and England - and its always been the same composition, light and heavy infantry, light and heavy horse, archers and pikemen and you can influence what the majority in your forces are
Title: Re: The Friday thread Labor Day edition
Post by: Gusington on September 03, 2012, 02:33:25 PM
OK, as long as I know that going in and don't get my expectations going too high. I am hoping for some variation with Muslim and later Orthodox Christian factions. Want to play as the Bulgars against the Byzantines too at some point and I want to feel adequately...Bulgarian.

You can prepurchase and get the game installed but frozen at the first turn of any game. You can plot moves, load scenarios, highlight units, see all the maps, etc. Then you wait like everyone else (though you get to play 3 days earlier than the rest of the Riff Raff).

Weird.  Two of my vassals (an Earl and a Lord Mayor, I think) went to war with each other in my demense and I didn't really see any options for me to step in and stop it.  Any ideas what to do in this case.  Oh, and naturally enough, the claim in a neighbouring county that I'd been pushing for for 50 years finally paid off, just in time for my two nitwits to whittle their levies down to nothing so I had no troops to raise to press my claim.

My vassals didn't go at each other, but my current game had me pressing my claim in Connacht with mercs while I sat back and watched.  Then a mystery army came in, Meath and attacked Tyrone as I was moving the mercs in position to take that over.  Of course, Tyrones troops came in to my county, Breifne and I had to raise the levies to eject them.  After dismissing the mercs, who had finished off Tyrone, Meath invaded Tyrone pressing a claim and my newly installed vassal and his barely extant troops, had to hold him off.  THAT's when my friend from Cali called and asked me to get online for Civ IV MP.  First time I seriously considered telling him, "No."

Started a game as Matilda I of Tuscany. I've taken Pisa, and am trying to get a claim on Piombino. I was tempted at the beginning of the game to try and succeed from the HRE. Since every one of those had failed I'm really happy I didn't. Never realized just how big of armies the HRE Emperor can throw around. I've seen at least two 5,000+ armies marching around along with a number of smaller ones. If I have any hope of forming the Kingdom of Italy and successfully succeeding then I'm going to need to conquer all of Italy in order to have a chance.

Now if only my duchess would have more kids....the 1 heir I have makes me a little nervous.

After the dust died down, I spent the next five years or so fixing the place up.  Munster came out of nowhere and trounced Tyrone, who didn't vassal to me, and absorbed.  Shortly after that, a claim was fabricated by Meath on my County of Breifne and they choose to use it. Thankfully, they haven't declared yet.  Which is a good thing because my Count, Aed, went over a railing and fell to his death.  His heir, my new character, was ten.  I survived my regency and am married to a newly come of age Countess of the southernmost county in Ireland.  Figured that would get me a claim and some help if things go south before I can unite the Emerald Isle under my guidance.

Depending on your crown authority vassals can go at it all day long or can't even say boo to a goose over the garden fence.... The less authority the more freedom... Meaning if your liege increases authority you can't declare wars either too!

If you look in the ledger I think hre start with around 15k troops at their disposal.... Not funny

Where do you find crown authority and how do you improve it?

Away from game at mo but I'm sure its in laws.... The little gavel at the top of the ui.... There's no guarantee the vassals will go for it and they certainly kick off if they're not happy.... I had many crown authority wars as king of Leon

you can set up your armies before a battle and load the flanks with leaders that have good martial skills, heavy cavalry and such, then load the middle with your main martial and a crap load of pikemen and get involved with the initial set up - but once the battle starts youre a spectator.

The fighting can be pretty absorbing.  I was once a Persian on SUPER EASY and managed to beat about 5000 Turks with 3200, but it was tricky.  Eventually the Turks turned up with 8000 and that was that.

On the other hand, somewhere in Central France in about 1076, the Royal Army of about 800 was ripped apart by about 700 peasants.
I blame the King who was kind of a non-entity.  I'm sure he did something silly.
