Title: Steam Summer Sale 2023
Post by: WYBaugh on June 28, 2023, 05:15:02 PM
Steam Summer Sale starts tomorrow (6/29).  What are you looking to pick up?

I've been waffling around about Warno vs Regiments.  Will have to see what tomorrow brings!

Don't let it.  The curve is highly overhyped.

Interested in Voor de Kroon, Archon Classic, and Aliens: Dark Descent but I know that won't be on sale.

Also the latest Panzer Corps 2 DLC, 'Axis Operations - 1945.'

These Steam sales have been going on for so many years that for me they are not about what I want  but rather what's on sale that I didn't know I wanted.  Sad but true.  :uglystupid2:

Might be too new to be part of the sale but I'm looking at that and other Slitherine games.

I still have half a month left on my Slitherine anniversary coupon (-50%) so for many games that should be the better option for me.

Now if Slitherine starts a summer sale in the next 2 weeks that would be perfect timing  .

I only have around 50 unplayed games left, so I really need something new  :embarrassed:  .

Not much for me in this sale. Just matched it against my wish list...very little on sale, and the discounts are kind of weak.

Very little on my wishlist that I care to pull the trigger on.

Might not be lying that I'm going to skip this one.

I have a really hard time finding any great deals, especially ones that have the "Wow!" factor. I did pick up the "Tides of Avarice" DLC for X4 for 40% off. That seems like an OK purchase...I think.

I think I'll pick up the Water Rats expansion for Radio General.

I was looking at Decisive Campaigns: Ardennes but I read they don't have the decision making mini-game in that one.  That's one of the things I enjoyed the most from DC: Barbarossa.  Might hold off on that one since it's only 20% right now.

Demonologist looks like it might be fun if I can convince some friends to jump in as well.

The Ardennes game is good, even without the decision making mini game.  I recommend it.

Shadow Empire is on sale, 45% off, on Steam. Everyone should buy it. Now. If you have any interest in serious war games with board game roots (unit counters, hex grid map) that has economic development and empire building elements, this game will be a blast.

I normally could have resisted this.  But there was a convergence of four unexpected factors:

1) You alerted me to the existence of the game
2) My library of unplayed Steam game was getting dangerously close to falling below 55 titles
3) I had just watched "Moby Dick"
4) It was 70% off

If there are no games that peak my interest, I find a good strategy for the STREAM sales is to look through the games you already own for any DLC bargains.

Are the Unity of Command 2 DLCs worth looking at ?

Also, Running With Rifles and DLC are incredibly cheap but is it good?

The title is a bit misleading.  It's a ghost hunting game for 1-4 players.  Lots of cool ghost hunting gadgets to play with, voice recognition to try to communicate with the ghosts, and lots of jump scares.

Being short on money, i've decided to limit myself to:

Silent Hunter 3, Discovery Tour by Assassin's Creed (to do with the Children) and Total War: 3 Kingdoms (base game).

I nabbed:

Water Rats DLC for Radio General (Typhoon airstrikes are great!)

Demonologist (super, spooky fun but the level progression system means you have to repeat the same level too many times before you can progress to the next map.  I got some friends to buy.  Co-op is good, especially as one of my friends does NOT like jump scares and tends to freak out and scream like a little girl)

Sinking City (haven't installed it yet.)

I also pre-ordered Jagged Alliance 3 from GreenManGaming.

I really can't find much in the sale, bought BMG Drive and picked up the Old World DLC tonight.

I think I've owned the old World base game for months and remember playing it for 20 minutes a while back and like most of my library I forgot about it and never got back to it until a couple days ago.  After playing a little more now, I'm really liking the game.

Out of all the civ/4x/strategy games I think I would rank this one near the top with Imperator Rome.  Plays a lot like civilization but has family and character development as well and I found a few wrong decisions could crush your empire.  The music track is amazing too.  There is a mod called old world extended that I tried quickly and it was like a whole new game with all kinds of new stuff and resources, uninstalling for now as until I learn the base game not ready for the mods.

Well in case you are not past the 2 hour mark may I recommend looking at Gates of Hell - Ostfront, personally I enjoying it much more than COH2, not to say everyone does though.  You can pickup the base game and call to arms for around the same price - the DLC at some point is worth it too.

Okay, so far for this sale (halfway through it?)

The big single pick is Total Warhammer III plus the Ogre Faction.

The major DLC batch so far is for the Dominion card game, the base set for which is free, and the UI has been polished pretty well. I recommend it a lot, and I'm teaching it to my m-players. It can be easily played live or asynch. Right now its only big lack is cross-play with consoles or mobile. (Also there's some evidence from one friend who has rigs both at home and work, for some reason he needs two accounts one per computer.  )
Dominion - Seaside
Dominion - Intrigue: 1st Edition
Dominion - Base Set: 1st Edition
Dominion - Promo Pack 2
Dominion - Promo Pack 1
Dominion - Seaside: 1st Edition

(I had already bought Intrigue current/2nd ed, and Hinterlands.)

Also looking at further asynch mp board game conversions:
Race for the Galaxy
Plus its DLC
Race for the Galaxy: Gathering Storm
Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium
Race for the Galaxy: Brink of War

And its Roll for the Galaxy dice digital version.

The "Roll for the X" series of games started with Roll for the Ages, which alas doesn't have a good adaptation (anymore, used to be kind-of-okay on iOS). However, the latest version of that system is set in medieval time, and a digital.... salute to that game, let us say, recently released on Steam to good reviews so I grabbed that, too:
Dice Kingdoms

The "Through the Ages" series has a card game sort of, with a digital adaptation, too. I've had it for a while (never played it), but I picked up the expansion pack while I was looking into asynch mp for my group.
New Leaders and Wonders - Expansion Pack

The dice-building genre had a quirky entry a year or two ago that I really wanted to like, but sent it back when I first bought it. I want to like it, though, so I'm trying again:
Dice Legacy

Last in my board-game adaptation for mp:
The Captain is Dead

Finally a bunch of very different things:

Siege Survival: Gloria Victis
Terminator: Resistance
Terminator: Annihilation Line (DLC)
The Red Lantern
DREDGE
Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid

Had a gift card since my birthday in early June, holding it for the sale.  Nothing grabbed me so I went with a game I wanted since it came out "Rule the Waves 3", my first time playing a game in this series.  Not on sale but still ok.

...and like a putz, I got Chivalry II as well (loved the original) in addition to Ogre as I have always been a Steve Jackson Games fan from my Car Wars and GURPS days but never had friends who played Ogre that I was aware of.  Can't wait to spend time with that one.

I just wish they, or anyone really, would do a straight up port of the original Car Wars tabletop like they did for Ogre.  There have been lots of interpretations, but I would love a faithful recreation.  Somewhere in my basement I have a bin full of original maps and counters.

I really wish they'd go all out and make a straight up Racing Simulation of Roger Corman's original Deathrace 2000.

Heck, I wish they would remake AutoDuel and Roadwar 2000. I loved the hell out of those two games.

+ 1 to CarWars AutoDuel remake.  Surprised this hasn't been done.  Even a conversion mod for Cyberpunk or GTAV would even be cool.

Re: Car Wars

My usual tactic in our games (we set limits via how much $$$ one could use to build vehicles) was to do a swarm of glass cannoned trikes and kamibombs.  Early and mid-game was fun but I'd want to kill myself towards the end for real as I just couldn't keep focus on things.  The ultimate games we did towards the end used everything we had up to that point; ground vehicles, boats, planes, etc. but damn was it a bit much.

I would try to do themes. For example one time I went NASCAR style, put all my weapons on right side and made left turns only.

It always made me sad that trying to do a Bootlegger Reverse inflicted so much damage on my tires.  It sure looked easy when the Dukes of Hazzard did it!
