Summary here...
I really liked the game, but sadly, it no longer runs on my rig.

Try it with the mod, maybe. I would imagine the mod was made for modern rigs in mind.
This game is great, I think I owned a copy on dvd at some point and played a bunch. I was going to rebuy it on steam but it's not currently for sale there at all. Also was wondering if the MP still works. Can you join a friend through the mp or is that part not functioning ?

You can still get keys for it from the Humble store or Green Man Gaming in the Battlestations Collection that also has Midway.

I am quoting from the Steam store page.
"Notice: Square Enix has temporarily removed this title from sale to work on some important updates. Please check back soon!"

I think that message has been there for about three and a half years, so I don't think anyone should count on it being available any time "soon".
