I cannot wait for this. I finally played the original Mafia (remastered) last year and it became one of my favorite games of all time.

The original Mafia was outstanding. Great story. Well told. City was alive. Graphics were great for the time. Nice mission content. I think I've played it 3 or 4 times.

Second one wasn't too bad. I liked the era, but some of the missions were diabolical. Still well done.

God alone knows what they done with the 3rd one.

Looking forward to - hopefully - "going back to where it all began"...literally - what made the first one so damn good.

Thought of you when I saw the news

Loved the first and didn't do 2 or 3 - it wasn't going to get better - I'm looking forward to this although I'm unsure if a 19th century Sicily can match a vibrant 20th century 'New York' for atmosphere

^It was really more Chicago than New York...that would be the only thing that could have possibly made the original better.

Mafia also had the auto race which was one of the toughest levels I ever loved to death. I did not mind playing through it like 25 times to finally win.

I think the problem with Mafia III was that they went from scripted missions to a more sandbox approach with map sectors that you had to unlock and take over, similar to the Far Cry games.  It got really repetitive having to do what amounted the mission over and over again and then watch the exact same cutscene each time you took over a new location.

I hope the new one goes back to the same style of scripted missions from the first game.  I still love that shootout in the parking garage.

I was going to bring up that auto race. At first I was pissed off that I couldn't advance in the story but by the time I had gotten to be good enough to win it I was like screw the story, I want to do this race some more.

25 seems about right for the 1st breakthrough, but I eventually won it many times. I can still remember a lot of the details. You needed to take the lead on the long straightaway before a hairpin left turn into the woods....

I never did finish the game.

The garage shoot out was an outstanding mission. But one of many in the game. Loved it. It's the only game I can go back to and forgive the graphics - just because the story and missions were so cool.

As for the 3rd, yeah - they relied on Open World for content, but forgot to put the content in. I think that's a problem with alot of open world games. They rely on the scale and forget how repetitive the game becomes.

Bugger. I'm going to play it again.

As for the 2nd - there's a really cool mission in it which links back to the first one.

You should. The whole thing from start to finish was amazing and the final scene was outstanding.

I still remember how cool the intro was as you flew into the game over the sea and into and around Lost Heaven

I didn't cheat! If I can do it clean you can too. And I went on to finish the game in glory. The original Mafia is easily one of my top 25 games of all time.

Just in case anyone is (and it doesn't look like there are) - I'd hold out on buying this for the moment.

I've played it for maybe 3 hours now (or more) and I'm very, very bored.

I'm not one who expects immediate gratitude - so I don't need to go diving into the action - but there's been very, very, VERY little to do so far.

Think about the cigarette distribution in Mafia II and then extend that for a couple of hours.

Now - I WOULD say that I love a game with a story - and so far, the story in this is great. But - there has been very little to do. I've had two knife fights and a horse race...everything else has been meeting/talking to characters and moving things.

I'm holding out hope that this is more akin to Mafia than it is to any of the others.

QuoteThe series went back to its story telling and experience. The story line was well done and the game play was decent. Is there aspects of the game they could have spent more time on to be smoother yes but overall I enjoyed the experience the game offers

I will update when I see this kicking into Mafia proper - if at all.

Bored after 3 hours in a game that only last 10 hours ...

I'll pass on this one.

as far as I have seem from Letsplays on Twitch it looks pretty linear but with a beautiful atmosphere, more like watching a good Mafia movie or mini-series (13h playtime) unfold, when you dont have to play all the mini-games and horse- and car-races, chases and gunfights yourself.

I save the money and enjoy the Letsplay experience instead.
(mandatory is a content creater where you realy like his/her presentation style, otherwise its pia)

and a little "trigger warning" for the 'snowflakes' ... some cut scenes are kind of emotional harsh, well its the Mafia in 1907 Silici not your grand aunthies Bridge Club 2025

Yeah - so far I'd say it's akin to Mafia II than the original. The original - after a fairly brief into iirc - had you straight into some action.

Well - I'm in anyway...and I do like games with a good story - so hopefully the action will pick up quick.

Was it at least a good one? Objectively, I mean. After all that boredom, any action would probably be a relief!

I mean - it was just a firefight. Collecting something and then we were ambushed - so we had to hold out.

It wasn't anything special. Pretty much the same as other stuff you've seen in other games.

So 5 hours in and on Chapter IV (it's numbered IV but it's really the 5th chapter as I also went through the Prologue) of 15, 2 (maybe 3) knife fights - which actually are quite well done tbf - and 1 gun fight and a horse race  :hair:

I'm hoping it ramps up now.

I mean - the original Mafia and Mafia II introduced you to NPCs as well - there were boring bits and cut scenes - but I remember being blown away by the original especially - and you were quite quickly into the mafia action...I don't think it took 5 hours.

I'm still going though.

from what i have witnessed in LetsPlay, what turned me off a little is , that even so the Don has a whole gang, somtimes at the objektive, you infiltrate and clear the objektiv all alone ... while the other guys are smoking somwhere outside, instead of at least keeping the exfill route (lets say the garden of an objetive) protected ... no you have to shoot your way out again against alarmed thugs swarming the exfill route.
well ok, sometimes you seam to have one partner in a firefight.
And positiv: the auto save points seem to be pretty fair placed when you lost a fight in a level/chapter and has to retry

Awesome

I saw some reviews mention that they've leaned really heavily into stealth gameplay on this one, which is discouraging to me.  Is this true?
Title: Re: Mafia: The old country
Post by: al_infierno on August 13, 2025, 07:00:07 PM
Went ahead and picked this up for myself because I do like me some good mobster fiction.  So far I pretty much agree with the takes earlier in the thread, I'm a couple hours in and it feels a lot more like an interactive movie than I would've expected.

As for the story, I'm liking it but not loving it.... It's a bit generic so far, though the dialogue is good and it's very well acted.  It's also moving at an absolutely glacial pace.  It's certainly immersive, but I would have liked to do a bit more than walk around, interact with stuff, and watch cutscenes in the first couple hours of gameplay.  The first knife fight was awful, but the second one is much better since you've been trained and "unlocked" more moves.

The graphics are absolutely excellent, and it runs really well.  I can practically smell the stables!  Wait... that's just me.

THAT - was one of the best shoot outs in a game.

All this talk just makes me want to play Mafia for a 7th time (or 8th or 9th).

I will finish this though - I am enjoying it - no other game could give me virtually nothing to do but a Mafia game. But I do like games with stories - so ymmv

As al_infierno said - it moves at a glacial pace!

I'm starting to enjoy it more now. There's stuff to do.

It's on rails - but I prefer games on rails to open world games. With open world games I get swamped with what to do when. I like a story with a set of points to complete.

It's taken a while. Over 6 hours in and on Chapter 5. But it's definitely got the Mafia feel...it was just really slow at the beginning...hopefully it'll keep this pace and story up.

Defo playing Mafia after this.

I just can't disagree. Almost 12 hours in and - it's beautiful - but boring. Really, really, really boring.

Just in case anyone is playing this - there are spoilers in this video...not that you might care

So sad.

Yeah, I took a break from this game for a couple weeks and the thought of going back to it reminds me of the feeling of being a high schooler on Sunday night realizing I half-finished my homework.  I don't *regret* buying it but I definitely wouldn't buy it again if I had the choice right now.

I think I'm on Chapter 12 with 14 hours

There's been some decent bits - but you just can't remember them for all the boring stuff in between.

Even this close to the end, I'm dragging my feet to finish it.
