Great book on aircraft performance from WWI on. It is engineering oriented, but accessible to more general readers.

Appendix has a very substantial list of performance data to compare aircraft. You can compare the Sopwith Camel and Fokker Dr1 for example, but see that the Sopwith Dolphin may have been better than both of them.
